The Surface is the second route in Hades 2, a four-region climb to Mount Olympus that a bloodline curse keeps you out of at first.
The Surface is the half of Hades 2 you have to earn, since a curse on your own bloodline locks you out of it until you break it.
It is the second of the game's two routes, the Mortal Realm ruled by the Olympians, and where Melinoe
climbs from the City of Ephyra all the way up to Mount Olympus and the Summit.
Reaching it takes two incantations, and even then the regions get steadily harder, ending at Typhon, the Father of All Monsters. The Surface is also where the true ending's second key reagent comes from.
This guide covers how to unlock the Surface, the life-draining curse you have to lift, all four regions and their Guardians, and how the route differs from the Underworld.
the second route in Hades 2, a four-region climb to Mount Olympus. The Surface is the Mortal Realm, the world of the living ruled by the Olympians, and it is the second of the two routes you run in Hades 2 as of patch v1.0.
The wiki describes it as the physical dimension where all living things exist until death, set against the Underworld where most of the story takes place. For
Melinoe it is enemy and family territory at once, since the Olympian gods who rule it are her relatives.
Where the Underworld route ends at Chronos
in Tartarus, the Surface route climbs upward through Greece toward Mount Olympus and ends at the Summit. It is shorter at four regions but escalates hard, and it is home to allies like Heracles, Circe, and Icarus
.
Crucially, the Surface is the only place to get one of the true ending's two key reagents, so you cannot finish the game on the Underworld route alone.
You reach the Surface in two steps: cast Permeation of Witching-Wards to open the gateway, then cast Unraveling a Fateful Bond to survive the curse waiting on the other side.
The wiki states Permeation of Witching-Wards grants the ability to traverse Warded gateways, including the one leading to the Surface, and it unlocks after you speak to Hecate
about the plight up there. That gets you through the door.
The bigger gate is the curse. Your bloodline carries an ancient life-draining curse that bars you from the Surface, and Unraveling a Fateful Bond forestalls it. That incantation requires Permeation of Witching-Wards plus talking to Moros
after first reaching the Surface, and it costs Lotus, Nightshade, Moss, and Thalamus.
Lift the curse before you commit to long Surface runs. Until Unraveling a Fateful Bond is cast, the bloodline curse drains your health on the Surface, so early trips are short and punishing. The incantation is the real unlock, not just the gateway.
The Surface route runs through four regions in order, each ending at a tougher Guardian than the last.
| Region | Guardian | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
City of Ephyra | Polyphemus | The first region, guarded by the blind Cyclops Polyphemus. Home to Heracles and Medea. |
Rift of Thessaly | Eris | Guarded by Eris, Strife Incarnate, with Charybdis as a Warden. Home to Circe and Icarus. |
Mount Olympus | Prometheus | Guarded by Prometheus, the Titan of Foresight, on the approach to the gods' home. |
The Summit | Typhon | The peak, guarded by Typhon, the Father of All Monsters and the final Surface boss. |
The difficulty curve is steep. In practice, Polyphemus is the gentlest Guardian by health, while Typhon
at the Summit is the hardest fight on either route, with a hidden health bar and four phases. Clearing all four is what feeds the Surface side of the true ending.
The Surface plays as a harder, shorter route with its own enemies, allies, and a pace-keeper that punishes rushing.
Its enemies are Chronos's forces dressed for the mortal world, and its gods and NPCs lean toward the Olympian side of Melinoe's family. Eris
also acts as the route's pace-keeper: clear nights too fast and she shows up early to bless you with a stacking damage-taken curse, the opposite of a reward.
Most importantly, the Surface is mandatory for completion. Zeus
and the other Olympians help you here, and the final Typhon kill is where the Entropy for Dissolution of Time spawns. You can favor the Underworld for farming, but the Surface cannot be skipped.
The Surface is the Mortal Realm, the world of the living ruled by the Olympians, and the second of the two routes in Hades 2. It runs through four regions from the City of Ephyra up to Mount Olympus and the Summit, ending at Typhon.
Cast two incantations at the Cauldron. Permeation of Witching-Wards lets you traverse the Warded gateway to the Surface, and Unraveling a Fateful Bond forestalls the bloodline curse that drains your health there. You need both to run the Surface properly.
Your bloodline carries an ancient life-draining curse that bars you from the Surface. Until you cast Unraveling a Fateful Bond to forestall it, your health drains while you are up there, which keeps early Surface trips short and dangerous.
In order, they are the City of Ephyra, guarded by Polyphemus; the Rift of Thessaly, guarded by Eris; Mount Olympus, guarded by Prometheus; and the Summit, guarded by Typhon, the Father of All Monsters and the hardest fight in the game.
The Surface is shorter at four regions but escalates harder, ending at Typhon, who is tougher than Chronos. Eris also acts as a pace-keeper, showing up early with a damage-taken curse if you clear nights too fast.
Yes. The final Typhon kill on the Surface is where the Entropy reagent for Dissolution of Time spawns, so you cannot reach the true ending by running only the Underworld route.
The Surface is home to the Olympian gods and to allies like Heracles and Medea in Ephyra, and Circe and Icarus in the Rift of Thessaly. The enemies are Chronos's forces adapted to the mortal world.
Eris is the route's pace-keeper. If you clear nights too quickly, she appears early and blesses you with a stacking damage-taken curse instead of fighting fair. Slowing down or beating her removes the pressure.
Keep building out your Hades 2 knowledge with these next stops.
