Melinoe is the playable hero of Hades 2, a witch-trained Titan-slayer who spends Magick to fire charged Omega Moves.
Melinoe is the first Hades hero who runs on a mana bar, and learning to feed it is the whole game.
She is the Princess of the Underworld, daughter of Hades and Persephone, and the younger sister of Zagreus. Where her brother dashed and struck, Melinoe spends Magick to charge Omega Moves, the heavy hits that define almost every strong build.
On top of that she layers a Selene Hex, a witch-trained moveset, and three meta-progression systems that replace the old Mirror of Night. The result plays close to the first game but rewards a completely different resource loop.
This guide covers who Melinoe is, how her Magick and Omega kit works, her Arcana, weapons, and Cauldron systems, and the clearest way to build her.
the Princess of the Underworld and the playable protagonist of Hades 2.Melinoe is the Princess of the Underworld, a chthonic goddess of ghosts and nightmares, and the playable protagonist of Hades 2.
She is the daughter of Hades and Persephone and the younger sister of Zagreus, born after the events of the first game. When the Titan Chronos
broke free and seized the Underworld, he imprisoned the House of Hades, and on her father order Hecate
spirited the infant Melinoe away to the Crossroads.
The Fates prophesied that the second child of Hades would topple the Titan, so Hecate raised and trained Melinoe in secret as a Titan-slayer. The wiki notes she grew up knowing only two of her Olympian relatives, Artemis and Hermes, until her journey finally reunites her with the rest of the pantheon.
She is serious, disciplined, and famously tidy, a sharp contrast to her laid-back brother. Her spectral green left arm comes from a sorcery accident while helping her friend Icarus, and she is voiced by Judy Alice Lee.
Melinoe core mechanic is Magick, a mana bar she spends to fire Omega Moves, and her power scales with how fast that bar refills.
According to the wiki, the key difference from Zagreus is this resource: by holding an input, Melinoe channels Magick into a much stronger Omega version of her Attack, Special, or Cast. She is at her strongest with a high Magick regeneration rate, which lets her chain Omega Moves instead of falling back on weak basic hits.
Paired with that is the Hex, granted by Selene
through her Gifts of the Moon. The Hex is the successor to the first game Calls, and it is fueled explicitly by spent Magick. Each Hex can only fire once you have spent a set amount of Magick that encounter, and the counter resets to zero at the start of every room, so high-Magick builds get to use it far more often.
Underneath the Magick layer, the basics feel familiar: a movement Sprint instead of a dash, an Attack, a Special, a Cast, and the boons that modify all of them. In practice the whole game becomes a question of how often you can afford to press the Omega button.
Treat Magick regeneration as your top stat priority on most builds. More regen means more Omega Moves and more Hexes, which matters more than a flat damage boost on a kit built around spending mana.
Melinoe gets stronger between runs through three systems that together replace the Mirror of Night from the first game.
| System | Replaces | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| Arcana Cards | Mirror of Night | Mystical Tarot cards that grant permanent buffs. The Grasp attribute sets how many you can hold active at once. |
| Nocturnal Arms | Infernal Arms | Her six weapons, each with multiple Aspects that reshape how it plays. |
| Cauldron | House Contractor | Casts Incantations that unlock features and expand the Crossroads and beyond. |
The Arcana Cards are the biggest day-one lever, since the Grasp cap forces real choices about which cards to run. Nocturnal Arms decide your moment-to-moment combat, and the Cauldron quietly unlocks the systems, like swapping keepsakes between regions, that make later runs smoother.
Unlock and slot Arcana Cards early, then raise Grasp so you can run more of them at once. A wider Grasp board is one of the fastest power gains available before you ever pick a boon.
The strongest Melinoe builds all chase the same thing: enough Magick regeneration to keep Omega Moves and the Hex firing nonstop.
Start by deciding which slot your damage runs through, usually the Omega Attack or Omega Special on your chosen weapon, then stack boons and Arcana that refund or regenerate Magick. From there a defensive god rounds out survival while your Omega Moves carry the offense.
Magick regeneration (fuels Omega Moves and Hexes)
One Omega slot (commit Attack or Special and boost it)
Selene Gift of the Moon (paid for by spent Magick)
A guard or block boon (survive while channeling Omega)
High Grasp board (run more cards at once)Across multiple runs, the Magick-regen core holds up on every weapon because the whole kit is built around spending and refilling mana. Lean too hard on basic attacks and Melinoe feels weak; keep the Omega Moves flowing and she is one of the strongest heroes the series has had.
Melinoe rarely fights truly alone, between her animal familiars and the allies who join her runs.
She bonds with several Animal Familiars, starting with the frog Frinos and later including Toula, Raki, and Hecate own companions Hecuba and Gale. Her affinity for living creatures is a running character trait, and a familiar can block or counter specific attacks during fights.
Among her allies, she can grow close to Nemesis
, her rival at the Crossroads, as well as Moros and others, several of whom are romanceable. The wiki lists Chronos and Scylla as her standing enemies, the targets her whole mission points toward.
Melinoe is the Princess of the Underworld and the playable protagonist of Hades 2. She is the daughter of Hades and Persephone, the younger sister of Zagreus, and a chthonic goddess of ghosts trained by Hecate to slay the Titan Chronos.
Melinoe runs on Magick, a mana bar she spends to fire Omega Moves, which are charged versions of her Attack, Special, and Cast. She also has a Selene Hex fueled by spent Magick, so high Magick regeneration is the key to her power.
Omega Moves are Melinoe charged abilities. By holding an input she channels Magick into a far stronger version of an attack, special, or cast. They are the main source of damage on most builds, which is why Magick regeneration matters so much.
They play differently rather than one being strictly better. Zagreus relies on dashes and basic strikes, while Melinoe sprints and spends Magick on Omega Moves and Hexes. Melinoe rewards a resource-management style that the first game did not have.
Stack Magick regeneration so you can keep firing Omega Moves and the Hex, commit your damage to one Omega slot, and add a defensive boon to survive while channeling. Raising the Grasp attribute to run more Arcana Cards is a strong early priority.
Through three systems: Arcana Cards for permanent buffs, the Nocturnal Arms and their Aspects for combat options, and the Cauldron for Incantations that unlock features. Together they replace the Mirror of Night from the first game.
Melinoe is the daughter of Hades and Persephone, which makes her the younger sister of Zagreus from the first game. Because Persephone father was mortal, Melinoe is three-quarters god and one-quarter mortal.
Yes. Melinoe can build relationships with several characters at the Crossroads, and a number of them, including Nemesis and Moros, can become romances once you raise their affinity high enough with gifts.
Keep building out your Hades 2 knowledge with these next stops.
