Hecate is Melinoe mentor and the first major boss, a witch who can turn you into a sheep mid-fight if you read her tells wrong.
Hecate is the only boss in Hades 2 who can turn you into a sheep and make you finish the fight that way.
She is the Witch of the Crossroads, a Titaness of magic, and the teacher who has trained Melinoe for the whole mission against Chronos. The Erebus fight is her final exam: she holds you back on purpose until she is sure you are ready for what waits below.
That makes her the first real wall in the game, with two phases, an invulnerability gate, and a Hex-based third stage built around her Twilight Curse. Beat her once and she becomes one of the most rewarding bonds at the Crossroads.
This guide covers who Hecate is, her full boss-fight kit, how to beat her, the Silver Wheel keepsake, and what her bond unlocks later.
the Guardian of Erebus, a 5,800 HP witch with clones, summons, and a sheep curse.Hecate is the Titan goddess of witchcraft, doorways, and crossroads, and she is the mentor who runs the whole resistance against Chronos.
The wiki titles her the Witch of the Crossroads, and you find her at the Cauldron tending the resistance while Melinoe
trains for the mission. When the House of Hades fell, Hecate was the one who carried the infant Melinoe to safety, and she has been her strict, loving teacher ever since. She is firm that she is a teacher and not a mother, which the game returns to more than once.
She also trains Nemesis
and once trained Eris, though she keeps both at arm length and tolerates them mainly because of oaths sworn to Nyx. Her familiars are the dog Hecuba and the polecat Gale, and as of patch v1.0 she is voiced by Amelia Tyler.
Her late-game story holds one of the biggest secrets in Hades 2, tied directly to Chronos and the timeline, which is why her bond is gated behind the True Ending. The deeper reveal is best left for the bond section so this guide stays light on spoilers up top.
Hecate is the Guardian of Erebus with 5,800 health, and she fights across escalating phases rather than one flat health bar.
Her base damage is modest, listed as 11 on Crossed Flames and 12 on Total Eclipse, so deaths here come from clutter and bad positioning, not single big hits. The wiki breaks her kit into a torch-and-clone opening phase and a Hex-driven invulnerable phase.
| Attack | Phase | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| Crossed Flames | Phase 1 | She spins and summons an expanding magic circle that then retracts inward. |
| Torch Attacks | Phase 1 | One or two Flame Arcs launched from her torches in quick succession. |
| Triple Divide | Phase 1 | Two clones join her and teleport around the room. Only the real Hecate takes damage; clones flash green when struck. |
| Sisters of the Dead | Transition | At a third health lost she turns invulnerable and summons flying Sisters that must be killed to drop her shield. |
| Total Eclipse | Hex phase | A magic circle spawns under your feet and explodes after a short delay. |
| Lunar Ray | Hex phase | Three lunar rays appear around her and start spinning across the floor. |
| Twilight Curse | Hex phase | A Hex Orb that transforms Melinoe into a slow, dash-weak sheep if it connects. |
The Hex phase attacks are borrowed from Selene
Gifts of the Moon, which is a nice bit of foreshadowing for the moon magic you unlock later. Twilight Curse always opens the third stage, so expect the sheep orb the moment her shield breaks the final time.
The fight is a positioning test: keep moving, break her invulnerability quickly, and respect the sheep orb above all else.
During phase one, treat Triple Divide as a search puzzle. The clones take no damage and flash green when hit, so stop swinging at the fakes and hunt the real Hecate, who still takes damage. Save your heavy burst for when she is solo and exposed between clone sets.
When she shields and summons the Sisters of the Dead, switch targets immediately. She stays invulnerable until they die, so the faster you clear them, the less time she spends throwing Hexes. A status effect that pressures groups, like a Weak or Hitch source, makes that add phase far safer.
The Twilight Curse orb is the one attack that can spiral a clean run. You can outrun it with movement speed, dash through it at the right beats (usually about seven dashes), or shut it down with Athena
Divine Dash or Mental Block. Frinos and certain Selene blocks also negate it. If you do get turned into a sheep, keep attacking, since you can still land basic hits while you wait it out.
Bring a dash-based defense and some bonus move speed into Erebus when you know Hecate is next. Both make Total Eclipse and the Twilight Curse almost free to avoid, which removes the only attacks that reliably end runs here.
Silver Wheel is Hecate keepsake, and it is one of the best opening keepsakes in the game for spell-heavy builds.
You earn it the first time you gift Nectar to Hecate. Once equipped, the wiki states it grants +50/75/100/150 bonus Magick for the night, scaling from Common up to the Heroic rank, and that Magick stays even after you swap the keepsake out between regions. It sits in the wider keepsake pool with the other character gifts.
The extra Magick matters most on builds that lean on Casts, Hexes, or Magick-hungry Omega moves, where a larger pool early lets you spend freely before your regeneration boons come online. Because the bonus persists after a swap, a common pattern is to start a run with Silver Wheel, bank the Magick, then change to a boon-focused keepsake for the region you actually want to shape.
Pair Silver Wheel with a god you want to draft anyway, then swap to that god boon keepsake after the first region. The Magick stays, so you get the early pool and the boon-targeting both, which a single keepsake slot normally cannot give you.
Hecate affinity caps at 14 hearts, but unlike most characters her bond is locked behind finishing the story.
According to the wiki, you unlock her affinity gauge by completing a Surface or Underworld run after the True Ending, then talking with her until she discusses your choice. From there you raise it with the usual gifts: Nectar, Bath Salts from Hot Springs events, a Twin Lure from fishing, and Ambrosia for the later hearts, one Indulgence per night.
The bond forged scene is gated even further, behind reaching the Epilogue and locating the Three Fates. It pays off the relationship that the whole game has been building, and in practice it reframes who Hecate is to Melinoe in a way that lands harder than any keepsake. If you have not finished the story, treat her bond as a long-term goal rather than an early one.
Hecate is the Titan goddess of witchcraft and crossroads, and she is Melinoe mentor and the leader of the Underworld resistance against Chronos. She is found at the Cauldron in the Crossroads and also serves as the Guardian boss of Erebus.
Keep moving, hunt the real Hecate during Triple Divide since the clones take no damage, and kill her Sisters of the Dead quickly to break her invulnerability. Above all, dodge the Twilight Curse orb so you are not turned into a sheep.
Hecate has 5,800 health as the Guardian of Erebus. Her damage is fairly low, listed as 11 on Crossed Flames and 12 on Total Eclipse, so the danger comes from her clones, summons, and Hex attacks rather than raw hits.
Twilight Curse is a Hex Orb Hecate launches at the start of her third stage. If it hits, Melinoe becomes a slow sheep with a weaker dash and no invulnerability frames. You can still attack as a sheep, but it is best avoided with movement speed or a dash defense.
The Silver Wheel, earned by gifting her Nectar. It grants +50 to +150 bonus Magick for the night depending on rank, and the Magick stays even if you swap the keepsake out between regions, which makes it a strong opener for spell builds.
Hecate fights Melinoe at Erebus as a test. As her teacher, she needs to confirm Melinoe is strong enough for the harder regions below before letting her continue toward Chronos. It is a checkpoint, not a real attempt to stop her.
Her affinity gauge unlocks only after the True Ending, once you complete a Surface or Underworld run and talk with her about your choice. The full bond forged scene also requires reaching the Epilogue and finding the Three Fates.
No. Melinoe parents are Hades and Persephone. Hecate raised and trained her after the House of Hades fell, but she is firm that she is a mentor and not a mother, which the story addresses directly.
Keep building out your Hades 2 knowledge with these next stops.
