All Bosses / Main Game + DLC / Patch v1.4.3

A 47-boss progression list covering main-story gates, optional fights, Warrior Dreams, dream variants, and every Pantheon-eligible DLC entry.

Total bosses: 47 with variantsMain-story gates: 10DLC additions: Hidden Dreams, Grimm Troupe, Godmaster

Per the wiki, "counting the variations, there are 47 bosses in the game. That number includes one joke boss that cannot damage the Knight (Zote), but excludes the two that are never actually fought." Roughly 10 of those are required for the standard main-story path; the rest are optional, dream-only, or DLC.

According to the wiki, "the Knight may have to defeat a Boss to access a new area, acquire an item, complete a quest, or simply further the main story of the game." The required ones are the gates that lead from Forgotten Crossroads to the Black Egg Temple; the optional ones are charm, ability, and lore rewards.

The wiki specifies that "almost all the boss fights in the game have multiple variations in the Hall of Gods, including alternate arenas that change the nature of a fight, or special challenges such as beating a boss without taking a hit." The Hall of Gods version and the Pantheon version of the same boss are often tuned differently.

This guide orders every boss by where the Knight naturally encounters them on a story run, flags the required vs optional gates, threads the Dream Nail rematch chain (Failed Champion, Lost Kin, Soul Tyrant, White Defender), and finishes with the DLC additions including Grimm, Pure Vessel, and the Absolute Radiance capstone.

  • First boss False Knight icon False Knight in Forgotten Crossroads; the canonical story-start fight.
  • Final boss Hollow Knight icon The Hollow Knight in the Black Egg Temple after all three Dreamers fall.
  • True ending Radiance icon The Radiance fought via Void Heart in the same Black Egg fight.
  • Hardest fight Pure Vessel icon Pure Vessel + Absolute Radiance in the Godmaster DLC Pantheons.

Boss Counts and Story Gates

The 47-boss total is the key framing. Per the wiki, "counting the variations, there are 47 bosses in the game. That number includes one joke boss that cannot damage the Knight (Zote), but excludes the two that are never actually fought." The split breaks roughly into main-story gates, optional regional bosses, Warrior Dreams, and DLC additions.

According to the wiki, the bosses that gate the main story are: False Knight, Hornet Protector, the Mantis Lords (optional but rewards passage), Soul Master, Crystal Guardian, Broken Vessel, Watcher Knights, Uumuu, and the three Dreamers indirectly through their guardians, plus the Hollow Knight as the final boss. Without Void Heart, the run ends there.

The wiki specifies that "some bosses also make a second appearance in the Colosseum of Fools." The Colosseum trials (Conqueror, Warrior, Fool) recycle Massive Moss Charger, Zote, Oblobbles, God Tamer, and a half-dozen other arenas. Players who skip the Colosseum miss roughly five bosses worth of Hunter's Journal entries.

Main Story Boss Order

The canonical first-pass order from Forgotten Crossroads through the Black Egg Temple runs through these fights. Each row marks whether the boss is strictly required for the standard ending.

According to the wiki, the order above is the natural progression order, not a hard requirement. Speedrunners commonly skip Crystal Guardian, the Dung Defender, and even the Mantis Lords; completionist runs add the optional fights between the story gates.

Build Tip

Per the wiki, the True Ending (Embrace the Void or Dream No More) requires the Void Heart Charm, which is obtained inside the Abyss. The Hollow Knight fight in the Black Egg ends the run without Void Heart; the Radiance fight only opens after Void Heart is equipped. In actual play, this means the Knight beats the Hollow Knight twice on most files: once without Void Heart for the standard ending, once with Void Heart for the Radiance.

Optional and Side Bosses

Optional bosses sit off the critical path but reward Masks, Charms, or Hunter's Journal completion. Per the wiki, "the Knight may have to defeat a Boss to access a new area, acquire an item, complete a quest, or simply further the main story of the game." The "acquire an item or complete a quest" branch covers most of the optional roster.

  • Brooding Mawlek (Forgotten Crossroads side room). Mask Shard reward; one of the earliest skippable fights.
  • Gruz Mother (Forgotten Crossroads main path). Pseudo-mandatory; the body blocks the corridor on most paths.
  • Vengefly King (King's Pass and Greenpath). Sole gate to the Howling Cliffs charm (Stalwart Shell) on early runs.
  • False Knight Statue / Failed Champion precursor. Same fight, harder dream form.
  • Nosk (Deepnest). Optional fight; rewards Mask Shard and mirror-fight Hunter's Journal entry.
  • The Collector (Tower of Love). Optional but required for Love Key and Grub completion.
  • Flukemarm (Royal Waterways secret). Rewards Flukenest charm.
  • Hive Knight (Hive, Lifeblood update). Hive Mask Shard and Hiveblood charm gate.
  • Traitor Lord (Queen's Gardens). Required for White Lady chamber and Mark of Pride.
  • Hornet Sentinel (Kingdom's Edge). Optional rematch; required for King's Brand pickup route.

The wiki specifies that the Colosseum of Fools recycles many of these in its trials. Trial of the Warrior is the second trial and locks in Oblobbles plus Zote as the gate; Trial of the Fool is the third and ends with God Tamer for the achievement.

Warrior Dreams

Warrior Dreams are dream-only fights against fallen warriors' spirits. Per the wiki, each grants Essence for the Awoken Dream Nail upgrade chain and lore from a former Hallownest figure. The five Warrior Dreams are:

  • Xero (Resting Grounds). 100 Essence.
  • Gorb (Howling Cliffs). 100 Essence.
  • Marmu (Queen's Gardens). 150 Essence.
  • No Eyes (Greenpath). 200 Essence.
  • Markoth (Kingdom's Edge). 250 Essence.
  • Galien (Deepnest). 200 Essence.

According to the wiki, these are entirely separate from Dream Boss variants like Lost Kin and Failed Champion. Warrior Dreams require the standard Dream Nail only; the Dream Boss variants require the Awoken Dream Nail upgrade.

Dream Boss Variants

Dream Boss variants are tougher rematches against main-game bosses, accessed by Dream Nailing the boss corpse or memorial. Per the wiki, the canonical four are tied to the Awoken Dream Nail completion pass:

  • Failed Champion. Dream version of False Knight; Dream Nail the corpse after the original kill.
  • Lost Kin. Dream version of Broken Vessel; the unmarred Vessel sibling bow drop.
  • Soul Tyrant. Dream version of Soul Master in the Soul Sanctum.
  • White Defender. Dream version of Dung Defender; the only fight that can be repeated up to five times in a single save.

The wiki notes the rematch yields 300-400 Essence per kill, making them the highest yields outside the Warrior Dreams. Players going for Awoken Dream Nail or 112% completion need all four variants on the kill list.

DLC Bosses

Three DLC expansions added the highest-difficulty tier of Hollow Knight bosses, all optional with respect to the standard ending but required for 112% completion.

Hidden Dreams (free, 2017)

  • White Defender. Five-stage Dung Defender rematch.
  • Grey Prince Zote. Bretta basement dream boss after the Zote save chain.

The Grimm Troupe (free, 2017)

  • Troupe Master Grimm. Patch v1.2 tent fight after two Flame sets.
  • Nightmare King Grimm. Dream Nail rematch on the sleeping Troupe Master after the third Flame set; required for the Ritual ending.

Godmaster (free, 2018)

  • Sisters of Battle. Three-Mantis-Lord remix.
  • God Tamer. Hall of Gods only version of the Colosseum fight.
  • Enraged Guardian. Crystal Guardian with full Infection in the Hall of Gods.
  • Pure Vessel. Pantheon of the Knight final fight; uncorrupted Hollow Knight.
  • Absolute Radiance. Pantheon of Hallownest capstone; the Godmaster ending boss.

Per the wiki, "Pantheon of Hallownest chains every prior fight" across the four prior Pantheons, ending with Absolute Radiance as the 47th consecutive boss. It is the hardest sequence in the game and the only way to see the Godmaster ending cutscene.

Common Mistakes

  1. Treating Mantis Lords as required. Per the wiki, the Mantis Lords gate Deepnest passage only if entering through Mantis Village. The Tram Pass route via the City of Tears bypasses them entirely.
  2. Skipping Crystal Guardian. Crystal Heart is optional for the standard ending but the movement ability matters for almost every late-game platforming route. Skipping it makes White Palace unreachable.
  3. Forgetting Void Heart before the Black Egg. The wiki specifies the Radiance fight requires Void Heart equipped; standard Hollow Knight fight without it locks the save into the Sealed Siblings ending and never opens the Dream No More path.
  4. Doing Pantheons before completing the Hall of Gods practice. Per the wiki, the Pantheons chain consecutive fights with shared health. Players who learn fights only in the regular world find Pantheon HP scaling brutal.
  5. Treating Warrior Dreams and Dream Boss variants as the same. The wiki separates them. Warrior Dreams (Xero, Gorb, Marmu, No Eyes, Markoth, Galien) are dream-only fights against fallen warriors. Dream Boss variants (Failed Champion, Lost Kin, Soul Tyrant, White Defender) are tougher rematches of main-game bosses.

Boss Order FAQ

How many bosses are in Hollow Knight?

47 counting variations. Per the wiki, the 47-boss total includes Hall of Gods variants and excludes two never-fought bosses. Zote counts as a joke boss because his nail deals no damage. The DLC expansions added more than half of the total across Hidden Dreams, Grimm Troupe, and Godmaster.

What is the first boss in Hollow Knight?

False Knight in Forgotten Crossroads. Per the wiki, False Knight is the canonical first major boss after Gruz Mother; he sits in a central Forgotten Crossroads chamber and rewards a Mask Shard plus the City Crest path forward.

What is the boss order for the main story?

False Knight, Hornet Protector, Mantis Lords, Soul Master, Crystal Guardian, Broken Vessel, Watcher Knights, Uumuu, then the Hollow Knight. Per the wiki, the Mantis Lords and Crystal Guardian are soft-required (region access only) and can be skipped on routed runs.

What is the final boss of Hollow Knight?

The Hollow Knight for the standard ending; the Radiance for the Dream No More true ending. Per the wiki, the Radiance is fought via Dream Nail into the Hollow Knight during the final fight after the Knight equips the Void Heart Charm from the Abyss.

What is the hardest boss in Hollow Knight?

Either Nightmare King Grimm, Pure Vessel, or Absolute Radiance depending on the player. Per the wiki, Absolute Radiance is the final Pantheon of Hallownest fight and is considered the hardest by most completionist runners because of the 42-fight Pantheon chain leading into it.

Are Warrior Dreams required for completion?

Yes for 112%. Per the wiki, the Awoken Dream Nail upgrade and the Seer’s Hunter’s Journal completion both require defeating every Warrior Dream. The set is Xero, Gorb, Marmu, No Eyes, Markoth, and Galien, all dream-only fights opened by their physical memorials.

What are the Dream Boss variants?

Failed Champion, Lost Kin, Soul Tyrant, and White Defender. Per the wiki, each is a Dream Nail rematch on the original boss corpse (False Knight, Broken Vessel, Soul Master, Dung Defender). They yield 300-400 Essence per kill, the highest single drops outside the Pantheons.

Do I have to do the DLC bosses for the true ending?

No. Per the wiki, the Dream No More ending only needs the Void Heart Charm and the Radiance fight, both inside the base game. The DLC additions (Hidden Dreams, Grimm Troupe, Godmaster) gate the Embrace the Void ending and the Godmaster Pantheon completion ending only.
