A Warrior Dream spirit in Kingdom's Edge, the meditating moth whose orbiting shield and homing nails make him the hardest Warrior Dream.
Markoth is widely treated as the hardest Warrior Dream. Per the wiki, he has "three attacks in addition to being able to teleport." The combination of homing nails, an orbiting shield, and a Shield Cyclone overlap means there is rarely a safe spot in the arena. The Shade Cloak gate keeps most early-game players out until late progression.
According to the wiki, the lore frames the fight as territorial. "Markoth was the only moth to carry a weapon besides Thistlewind. He went to Kingdom's Edge to seclude himself and meditate, hoping to uncover a truth long forgotten. Markoth fought any who would threaten him, regardless of their reasons." The fight is a meditation interrupted.
The wiki specifies the dialogue tone. "You have come a long way, just to die here at the edge of the world. No, do not speak. I have heard thousands and thousands of empty words from those like you... Raise your weapon then, and die like those who came before you." Cold opening, no negotiation; the Knight is just another visitor he plans to dispatch.
This guide covers the Shade Gate access in Kingdom's Edge, the three-attack moveset with Nail Barrage, Shield Cyclone, and the orbiting Shield ability, the Shape of Unn heal trick during Nail Barrage, the 250 Essence drop, and the post-fight "You are the darkness... come to consume me" recognition that closes the lore arc.
A Warrior Dream spirit, the only weapon-carrying moth besides Thistlewind, meditating at Kingdom's Edge.
Lone cave at the far Kingdom's Edge, behind a Shade Gate (requires Shade Cloak).
Shade Cloak + Dream Nail, the cloak bypasses the Shade Gate; the Nail summons the spirit.
250 Essence, one of the highest Warrior Dream drops on the Awoken Dream Nail path.Markoth is the warrior-monk Moth Tribe outlier. Per the wiki, "Markoth was the only moth to carry a weapon besides Thistlewind. He went to Kingdom's Edge to seclude himself and meditate, hoping to uncover a truth long forgotten." The Moth Tribe is famously pacifist; Markoth carried a nail and a shield anyway, which marks him as an exception.
According to the wiki, he died unobserved. "He eventually died, his remains never to be found, in a lone cave of Kingdom's Edge." His corpse remains in the arena as a Dream Nail target. The Hunter's Journal can be completed by Dream Nailing the corpse itself, plus defeating the spirit.
The wiki specifies the post-fight recognition. "Never... have I been defeated in combat. I can... see myself there, still sleeping. How long have I been hidden here? Here at the edge of the world, no-one could find me... except you. Warriors, knights, kings, even time itself... they have no power over me. Only you. You are the darkness... come to consume me." Markoth correctly reads the Knight as Void.
The Hall of Gods tag confirms the lore. "I lie dreaming at the edge of the world. Dreamborn god of meditation and isolation." The meditation-and-isolation tag is the lore beat; he succeeded at both right up until the Knight arrived.
Markoth's cave sits in far Kingdom's Edge, behind a Shade Gate. Per the wiki, "in order to reach the location, the Shade Cloak is needed to bypass the Shade Gate before Markoth's room." Without Shade Cloak, the access corridor is impassable; this is one of the latest-gated Warrior Dreams in the progression.
According to the wiki, the cave is one of the deepest corners of Kingdom's Edge. Players typically reach it after acquiring Shade Cloak from the Abyss and the Tram Pass for the regional traversal. The standard route is Tram, Hive Knight, then east-to-Kingdom's-Edge via the Stag Station.
The wiki notes the body interaction. "On his corpse: The body of a warrior, with a shield and nails." Inspecting (not Dream Nailing) the corpse gives the basic description; the Dream Nail strike on the corpse starts the fight.
Markoth has three attacks plus teleport. Per the wiki, the moveset works because his orbiting Shield is always live. Every attack happens while the shield is rotating around him; getting hits in requires reading both the attack and the shield position.
According to the wiki, the 50% HP gate changes Shield Cyclone behaviour. "This is somewhat less effective after he reaches 50% HP, as the second shield stays close to him." The dash-through tech that works at full HP becomes harder in the second phase; the heal window is the main remaining use.
Per the wiki, "the Shape of Unn Charm is incredibly helpful, as it allows the Knight to dodge the Nail Barrage attack while healing." In actual play, Shape of Unn turns the Nail Barrage from the fight's biggest threat into a free heal window because the slug-form hitbox slides under the homing nails.
The dominant Markoth route uses Shape of Unn for heals plus ranged spells. Per the wiki, "wall-sliding with the Mantis Claw and attacking with the Vengeful Spirit / Shade Soul Spell is a good tactic as Markoth moves relatively slowly and has a large hitbox." Wall-cast Vengeful Spirit avoids the orbiting shield from a safe angle.
Shade Cloak (ability: Shade Gate access + Nail Barrage phase-throughs)
Mantis Claw (ability: wall-cling cast positions for Vengeful Spirit)
Quick Focus (faster heals in the Shield Cyclone heal pocket)According to the wiki, the Nail Barrage heal trick is the highest-impact tech. "Healing during his Nail Barrage attack can be quite difficult, as the nails pass through the environment. Keep moving and get attacks in whenever the opportunity arises." Shape of Unn turns moving and healing into the same action; the slug-form hitbox slides under the homing arc.
The wiki specifies the Shield Cyclone positional plays. "His Shield Cyclone attack is the best time to heal, as the shield has limited range." The heal pocket outside the cyclone is the standard rest beat. The dash-in damage option works pre-50% HP: "dashing into the circle when it widens leaves Markoth completely open to attacks until the shield retracts."
Across multiple runs, Markoth's difficulty is the Pantheon Radiant tier where the arena changes remove platform safety. The base-game Kingdom's Edge cave is the most forgiving arena; once Pantheon Radiant unlocks, Markoth becomes the cited reason most players never finish the Pantheon achievements.
Markoth drops 250 Essence on defeat. Per the wiki, "the spirit then shatters into 250 Essence to be collected by the Dream Nail." That is the highest Warrior Dream Essence yield in the set (with Elder Hu and Galien also at 200+). The Awoken Dream Nail upgrade through the Seer counts every Warrior Dream regardless of yield.
According to the wiki, Markoth returns in the Pantheon of the Knight as the 7th boss. "Pantheon of the Knight, 7th boss. Health: Attuned difficulty 650. Ascended difficulty 950. Arena changes: The arena's ground disappears and platforms are rearranged on Ascended difficulty or above." The floor removal is the difficulty wall; Ascended Markoth fights on isolated platforms with pit-fall risk.
The wiki specifies the Hall of Gods text. "I lie dreaming at the edge of the world. Dreamborn god of meditation and isolation." The meditation-isolation tag matches his pre-fight pitch: "Warriors, knights, kings, even time itself... they have no power over me. Only you." Until the Knight arrived, he was genuinely beyond reach.
Markoth is one of seven Warrior Dreams on the Awoken Dream Nail upgrade path. These spokes pick up the threads.
