God Tamer Hollow Knight Guide

God Tamer icon, the lance-wielding veteran riding her tamed Beast
Main Game / Hollow Knight (Patch v1.4)

Final boss of the Trial of the Fool, a small Tamer fighting alongside her tamed crustacean Beast for the 20G Fool achievement.

Location: Colosseum of Fools (Trial of the Fool)Reward: Fool Achievement (20G)Pantheon: Sage, 4th boss

God Tamer is the last gate on the hardest Colosseum trial. Per the wiki, "God Tamer is the final enemy of the Trial of the Fool." The Trial has no checkpoints; if the Knight loses to God Tamer, the entire 30-plus-wave gauntlet restarts from scratch.

According to the wiki, the lore frames her as a veteran. "God Tamer is a veteran warrior of the Colosseum of Fools, taking the mantle of boss of the last and most brutal trial. She compensates for her small stature with the strength of her tamed Beast, alongside which she fights. They both present signs of the Infection." The Beast does most of the damage; the Tamer's Leap punishes positioning errors.

The wiki specifies the abandon rule. "She abandons the fight if her Beast is defeated before her. On the other hand, the Beast continues fighting even if the Tamer is defeated first." Focus the Beast; the Tamer gives up and collapses once the Beast falls.

This guide covers the Trial of the Fool no-checkpoint warning, the Tamer's Leap and the Beast's Roll plus Spew attacks, the focus-the-Beast strategy, the down-strike rule, the Weaversong cheese option, the Pantheon of the Sage rematch, and the Lobster Lancer original concept that preceded the final design.

Who God Tamer Is

God Tamer is a small-stature gladiator riding a much larger tamed beast. Per the wiki, the Hunter's Journal description reads: "Some hunters train beasts to join them in chasing down prey. I tried it once, but couldn't resist the urge to test my companion's strength against mine." She is the only such tamer the Hunter knows of.

According to the wiki, both fighters carry the Infection. "They both present signs of the Infection." Her Dream Nail dialogue matches generic husk lines ("Get away from me! Your smell... Kill you... Light... The light...") rather than the focused Fools dialogue. The Beast's Dream Nail is shorter and animal: "Hungry... Hungry... Scared..."

The wiki specifies the survival quirk. "While the Beast dies at the end of the fight, God Tamer herself remains alive and collapses on the ground no matter who is defeated first." The Beast explodes from Infection; the Tamer survives as a flopped NPC, sparing the Knight from a clean kill.

The Hall of Gods tag confirms the role. "I wait, weapon in hand, within the colosseum. Gallant god of the arena." The "gallant" tag matches her code of conduct (giving up when the Beast falls) more than the lore beat.

Trial of the Fool Access

God Tamer is the final boss of the Trial of the Fool. Per the wiki, "this boss is only found in the Colosseum of Fools and Godhome." The Trial of the Fool is the third and hardest Colosseum trial, costing 450 Geo to enter; God Tamer waits at the end after every other gladiator falls.

According to the wiki, the no-checkpoint rule is the wall. "Be warned that there are no checkpoints in the Colosseum, so if the Knight loses to God Tamer, they have to start the Trial of the Fool from the beginning." The full Trial takes 20-30 minutes per attempt; God Tamer is the entire payoff.

The wiki notes the Pantheon-bypass. "This boss is also found in the Pantheon of the Sage, without having to defeat her in the Trial first." Players who never finish the Trial of the Fool still encounter God Tamer in the Pantheon as the 4th boss. The Hall of Gods statue requires either Trial completion or a single Pantheon encounter.

Tamer and Beast Moveset

God Tamer has one attack; the Beast has two. Per the wiki, the fight runs four concurrent threats: Tamer leaps, Beast rolls, Beast spews, and Beast lands on the Knight's position.

Tamer attacks

  • Leap. The wiki specifies: "God Tamer leaps into the air and swings her lance down. She brings her lance down just as she lands. God Tamer tracks the Knight with this attack, bringing her lance down where the Knight was when she started the leap. Despite this, there is a maximum range to this attack of about 75% of the arena. This attack happens independent of the Beast's attacks."

Beast attacks

  • Roll. Per the wiki, "the Beast curls up into a ball and rolls across the arena towards the Knight. It traverses the entire arena and when it hits the wall, it bounces high into the air and attempts to land on the Knight." The Roll is nail-invulnerable; spells still hit.
  • Spew. The wiki specifies: "the Beast spews blobs of Infection towards the Knight. The projectiles travel in three groups: one group drops just in front of the Beast, another flies across most of the arena, and the third group splits the difference. This formation creates large, safe gaps on the arena floor between the groupings."

According to the wiki, the Beast's weak point is overhead. "The Beast has very few ways of dealing with attacks from above. Therefore, down-striking the Beast with the Nail is incredibly effective when the Beast is not Rolling." Pogo-strikes during Spew are the fastest legit nail damage.

Build Tip

Per the wiki, "the Vengeful Spirit / Shade Soul Spell is useful in this fight because it can hit both the Beast and God Tamer with a single cast. If the Beast is using its Roll attack, a single, well-timed cast of the Spell can hit as many as five times by moving with the Beast." In actual play, parallel-cast Vengeful Spirit during a Roll is the highest-DPS option in the fight.

Strategy and Weaversong Cheese

The dominant God Tamer route focuses on the Beast with Shaman-Stone Vengeful Spirit. Per the wiki, "God Tamer stops fighting once her Beast dies so it is recommended to focus on the Beast while dodging and ignoring God Tamer." Single-target everything you have at the Beast; the Tamer falls automatically.

Charm 1Shaman Stone icon Shaman Stone (boosts Vengeful Spirit and Descending Dark damage)
Charm 2Vengeful Spirit icon Vengeful Spirit (spell: hits both fighters per cast)
Charm 3Desolate Dive icon Desolate Dive (spell: invincibility frames during Roll approaches)
Charm 4Stalwart Shell icon Stalwart Shell (longer invuln after the inevitable Spew-clip hit)
Charm 5Shade Cloak icon Shade Cloak (ability: dashes through Roll and Leap safely)

According to the wiki, the Cyclone Slash option pairs with the Beast Roll. "To focus damage on the Beast, the Cyclone Slash Nail Art is very helpful as a way to respond when the Beast completes a Roll attack." Cast at the wall-bounce moment; the Cyclone catches the bounce.

The wiki specifies the Weaversong cheese. "Equipping the Weaversong Charm can make the fight trivial. Simply sticking to one of the walls of the arena using the charge of Crystal Heart keeps the Knight completely safe while the weavers slowly kill the two enemies." The cheese works in the base-game Colosseum arena but not in Godhome.

The wiki notes the heal window. "There is plenty of time to heal before God Tamer enters the arena. Both God Tamer and her Beast have relatively little health by boss standards, making them susceptible to damage-bursting them both down, especially with the Stalwart Shell Charm equipped." Pre-fight heal time exists; the burst-down option works on confident attempts.

Fool Achievement and Pantheon

Defeating God Tamer at the Trial of the Fool grants the Fool achievement. Per the wiki, "Complete the Trial of the Fool" is the 20G achievement reward. The Knight also collects a Mask Shard and Pale Ore from the Trial completion, plus the King's Idol from the Trial-of-the-Fool chest pre-fight.

According to the wiki, God Tamer returns in the Pantheon of the Sage as the 4th boss. "Pantheon of the Sage, 4th boss. Health: Attuned difficulty 750 (each). Ascended difficulty 1000 (each)." Both Tamer and Beast share the HP value; killing one and leaving the other costs the Beast's full HP across the gauntlet.

The wiki specifies the Lobster Lancer lore quirk. "God Tamer's initial name was Lobster Lancer and as the name suggests, the original concept for the Beast was a giant lobster. God Tamer's design was based on a cockroach." The internal name `LOBSTER_LANCER` still uses the original. Across multiple runs, the cockroach-on-crustacean pairing is one of the few backer-designed bosses outside the Warrior Dreams.

Common Mistakes

  1. Focusing on the Tamer. Per the wiki, the Tamer abandons the fight when the Beast dies. Killing the Tamer first leaves the Beast at full health with no auto-surrender; focus the Beast for the shorter total fight.
  2. Nail-striking a rolling Beast. The wiki specifies the Beast is "invulnerable to Nail attacks" while Rolling. Spells still damage; nail strikes whiff. Save SOUL for Vengeful Spirit during the Roll.
  3. Standing in Spew gaps without checking. Per the wiki, the three Spew groups leave "large, safe gaps on the arena floor between the groupings." The gaps are predictable, but they vary in width; pre-confirm the safe spot before committing.
  4. Forgetting Shaman Stone for parallel hits. The wiki notes a single Shaman-Stone Vengeful Spirit can hit a rolling Beast up to five times by moving with it. Without Shaman Stone, the same cast hits 1-2 times. The Charm is mandatory.
  5. Skipping Weaversong in the Colosseum. Per the wiki, Weaversong plus Crystal Heart wall-charge is an AFK kill in the Colosseum arena. Players who struggle with the fight skip the cheese; the cheese is the intended easy mode.

What does God Tamer drop?

The Fool achievement (20G) for Trial of the Fool completion. Per the wiki, the Trial as a whole also drops a Mask Shard and a Pale Ore. God Tamer herself is spared by the script; only the Beast dies.

What attacks do God Tamer and the Beast use?
