The Dream Nail rematch of Broken Vessel, a Lightseed-controlled Vessel husk that drops 400 Essence and counts toward the Awoken Dream Nail.
Lost Kin is the fight the Knight returns to after beating Broken Vessel. Per the wiki, "Lost Kin is a boss in Hollow Knight. It is the Dream variant of the Broken Vessel, faster and tougher than its physical counterpart." The husk is still Lightseed-controlled in the dream; the Infection holds.
According to the wiki, Lost Kin shares the basic moveset but escalates almost every attack. The Aerial Slash falls faster, the Leap rises and falls faster, the Slam now spawns six Infection blobs instead of four, and Infected Balloons spawn every 2-3 seconds with a cap of six instead of three.
The wiki specifies the one mercy. "Cascade: Lost Kin no longer uses this attack." The screen-clearing Cascade that Broken Vessel triggers at 370, 220, and 110 HP gates is removed in the dream. The trade-off is the constant Balloon swarm; the Knight has more standing-room damage windows but far less time to heal.
This guide covers the Dream Nail trigger at the Broken Vessel corpse, the changed moveset and the six-blob Slam, the Defender's Crest Balloon control standard, the Vengeful Spirit knockback double-hit, and the 400 Essence drop that anchors Awoken Dream Nail progression.

400 Essence, one of the largest single drops in the game for Dream Nail progression.
Defender's Crest, pops the Infected Balloons that block every heal.Lost Kin is the Dream variant of Broken Vessel. Per the wiki, the Vessel husk in Ancient Basin can be Dream Nailed after the live fight; the dream pulls the Knight into a sharper version of the same arena. "Lost Kin is the Dream variant of the Broken Vessel, faster and tougher than its physical counterpart." The Infection still grips the body in the dream-state.
According to the wiki, the post-fight scene is the canonical sibling acknowledgement. After defeat, Lost Kin "does not speak to the Knight upon defeat, but rather gives the option to Accept, where it bows down to the Knight once before disappearing and giving Essence." Unlike the seven Warrior Dreams spirits, Lost Kin stays silent. Same Vessel silence as the Knight's.
The Hall of Gods tag names the lore. The wiki lists Lost Kin's Hall of Gods text as "I sleep in the deep caves below the world" and "Lost god of the Abyss." This is the Pale King's siblings-tier framing: a Vessel that fell short of becoming the Hollow Knight, kept by the Lightseeds and the Abyss memory.
Lost Kin needs Broken Vessel beaten first. Per the wiki, "Broken Vessel needs to be Dream Nailed, and it can be found where it was first defeated, near the far left corner of the Ancient Basin, guarding the Monarch Wings ability." The same arena, the same husk, struck once with the Dream Nail.
According to the wiki, the canonical sequence is always: Broken Vessel first, Lost Kin second. The husk has to die in the live fight before the dream opens. Players who beat Broken Vessel without the Dream Nail (acquired in Resting Grounds via the Seer) need to return after the Nail before Lost Kin is available.
The wiki notes the Dream Boss safety. "As with the other Dream Bosses, the Knight does not die when they lose all their health during this battle, but simply wakes up next to Lost Kin. This means that the Fragile Strength and Fragile Heart Charms can be used continually without breaking." In practice, this is the single most important rule for budget-conscious players; Fragile Strength stays free across every attempt.
Lost Kin runs the Broken Vessel moveset at a higher tempo with three meaningful adjustments. Per the wiki, the changes are:
According to the wiki, the stagger threshold matches Broken Vessel: 13 hits, 7 combo, under two seconds per hit. "Lost Kin also staggers very easily, meaning that using the Quick Slash Charm can easily knock it down and allow for a moment to heal." Quick Slash builds clear stagger windows roughly every 30 seconds of clean DPS.
Per the wiki, the Balloon swarm is the fight. "Dealing with the Infected Balloons can be the trickiest part of the fight as the rate they spawn can prevent healing. Unnecessary damage can also be taken when trying to dodge Lost Kin's attacks and colliding with them." In actual play, more Lost Kin deaths come from Balloon contact than from the boss's own attacks. Defender's Crest auto-pops them; Spore Shroom pops them during heals.
The standard Lost Kin loadout pairs Defender's Crest with high-stagger DPS. Per the wiki, "Defender's Crest Charm offers a damaging barrier around the Knight which defeats the Infected Balloons, providing ample time to heal." It is the single most-recommended Charm in the wiki's strategy section.
According to the wiki, the Spell route works because Lost Kin keeps Broken Vessel's knockback property. "Like Broken Vessel, Lost Kin takes knockback from attacks. As such, the Vengeful Spirit/Shade Soul Spell is useful against it as well, especially when combined with the Shaman Stone Charm." A Shaman-Stone Vengeful Spirit at point-blank often connects twice for ~30 damage per cast.
The wiki notes a tank-and-stagger backup line. "Another way to defeat Lost Kin is to equip Defender's Crest and Quick Slash and then just rapidly attacking Lost Kin. With six or seven Masks, the Knight can tank damage until Lost Kin staggers and then heal during it (getting up to three heals with Quick Focus equipped) and then repeat this process." This is the brute-force route when positioning fails.
The wiki specifies a corner-cheese option. "A very safe strategy is to cling to the left or right wall while charging Super Dash far up enough that Lost Kin cannot reach the Knight. This allows the Knight to avoid all contact with the boss. Dealing damage while sitting in the corner requires some form of a companion: Grimmchild, Weaversong, and Glowing Womb." In real runs, this is a 15-minute safety net rather than a speed strategy.
Lost Kin drops 400 Essence on defeat. Per the wiki, this is one of the largest single-fight drops in the game and a required step on the Awoken Dream Nail upgrade path through the Seer. Lost Kin pairs with Failed Champion as the two 300+ Essence Dream rematches; together they cover much of the upgrade cost.
According to the wiki, Lost Kin returns in the Pantheon of the Knight as the second boss. The Attuned difficulty health is 1200; Ascended is 1650. "The arena where Lost Kin is fought in Godhome is the same as Broken Vessel's. The difference, however, is that the Infection's presence is replaced with vines and roots." Same layout, different visual theme.
The wiki specifies a Pantheon-specific Charm consideration. Defender's Crest "approach can be more useful in the Pantheons, where Lost Kin is not fought in isolation, as it is generally more useful against other bosses than Defender's Crest." Translation: in solo runs, Defender's Crest wins for Balloon control; in the Pantheon, swap in higher-damage Charms that carry across the gauntlet.
Lost Kin connects to Broken Vessel, the Awoken Dream Nail upgrade chain, and the Pantheon of the Knight Godmaster gauntlet. These spokes pick up the threads.
