All Characters / Hollow Knight (Patch v1.4.3)

A directory of every named NPC, Vessel sibling, Dreamer, higher being, and Dirtmouth resident the Knight meets across Hallownest.

Protagonist: The KnightDirtmouth residents: 10+Dreamers: Monomon, Lurien, Herrah

Most Hollow Knight character lists miss the Vessel sibling distinction. Per the wiki, the protagonist "the Knight" and the sealed final boss "the Hollow Knight" are two different Vessels, both children of the Pale King and the White Lady. The Hollow Knight is the older sibling chosen to contain the Radiance; the Knight is one of the discarded Vessels who escaped the Abyss.

According to the wiki, the named cast splits across four functional groups. Dirtmouth residents (Sly, Bretta, Elderbug, Iselda, Zote) are the persistent town hub. Quest NPCs (Cornifer, the Hunter, Quirrel, Cloth) drive progression. Higher beings (Pale King, White Lady, Radiance) are the lore axis. Vessel siblings (Knight, Hollow Knight, Hornet) are the family tree.

The wiki specifies the Hornet asymmetry. Hornet is a half-sibling: her mother is Herrah the Beast, a Deepnest Dreamer, while her father is the Pale King. The Knight's mother is the White Lady. Same father, different mothers, different species; both are Pale-King-line royalty.

This guide covers the protagonist axis, the full Dirtmouth roster, the three Dreamers and their guardians, every quest-giving NPC the Knight meets, the Grimm Troupe additions, the Vessel-sibling family tree, and the Higher Beings that shape Hallownest's history.

  • Protagonist The Knight icon The Knight, a discarded Vessel of the Pale King and the White Lady.
  • Sibling Hornet icon Hornet, half-sibling, daughter of Herrah and the Pale King.
  • Town hub Elderbug icon Dirtmouth residents including Elderbug, Sly, Bretta, Iselda, and Zote.
  • Lore axis Pale King icon Pale King and White Lady, the royal couple who created the Vessels.

Protagonists and Vessel Siblings

The Vessel family tree is the spine of the cast. Per the wiki, the Pale King and the White Lady created the Vessels in the Abyss to contain the Radiance; the Hollow Knight was the chosen one, the Knight is a discarded sibling who returned to Hallownest, and Hornet is the Pale King's daughter with Herrah rather than the White Lady.

According to the wiki, "Hornet is the mysterious princess-protector of Hallownest's ruins" and the playable protagonist of Hollow Knight: Silksong. She fights the Knight twice (Greenpath as Protector, Kingdom's Edge as Sentinel), each time as a delay-tactic miniboss rather than an actual antagonist.

Dirtmouth Residents

Dirtmouth is the hub town above the well. Per the wiki, the town hosts the persistent NPC roster the Knight returns to between expedition runs. The baseline residents are:

  • Elderbug icon Elderbug. The last bug of Dirtmouth, the welcoming voice on every return.
  • Sly icon Sly. Travelling shopkeeper who returns from the Forgotten Crossroads; sells nail and notch upgrades and is canonically the former Great Nailsage.
  • Iselda icon Iselda. Sly's shop neighbour; sells maps, pins, and the Wayward Compass.
  • Bretta. Rescued from the Fungal Wastes; lives in the south house, hosts Grey Prince Zote in her basement after the Zote save chain.
  • Zote icon Zote. The Mighty arrives after the Vengefly King rescue; recites the 57 Precepts and eventually becomes the Grey Prince Zote dream boss.
  • Cornifer icon Cornifer and Iselda. Cornifer is the field cartographer who eventually retires to Iselda's shop.
  • Brumm and the Grimm Troupe. Add a second tent during the Grimm questline; Brumm replaces with Nymm on the Banishment branch.

The Three Dreamers

The Dreamers anchor the Black Egg seal that holds the Hollow Knight. Per the wiki, the trio is fixed: Monomon the Teacher, Lurien the Watcher, and Herrah the Beast. Each volunteered or bargained their way into the Dream Realm so the seal could hold.

  • Monomon sits in Teacher's Archives in Fog Canyon, guarded by Uumuu.
  • Lurien sits at the top of the Watcher's Spire in the City of Tears, guarded by the Watcher Knights.
  • Herrah sleeps in the Beast's Den in Deepnest, guarded by Nosk's region.

According to the wiki, all three Dream Nails go through the Awoken Dream Nail upgrade. Standard Dream Nail enters their minds; the Awoken Dream Nail breaks the seal. The Knight defeats each guardian, enters the Dreamer's mind, and breaks the seal in sequence to open the Temple of the Black Egg.

Quest and Area NPCs

Beyond Dirtmouth and the Dreamers, the Knight meets quest-giving and conversational NPCs across the regions. Per the wiki, these are the persistent voice of the world; most have Dream Nail dialogue that adds lore beyond their visible role.

  • Quirrel. Monomon's apprentice who carries her mask as a hat; appears across nine fixed encounters.
  • The Hunter. Lives in a Crossroads cave with the Hunter's Journal; gives the Mark of Pride Charm.
  • Cloth. Warrior who tags through Fungal Wastes, City of Tears, and eventually dies in the Traitor Lord fight on the brave-help save branch.
  • Myla. Singing miner near Crystal Peak; falls to the Infection across four visit-state stages.
  • Tiso. Outsider who heads to the Colosseum of Fools; doesn't survive the trial.
  • Leg Eater, Salubra, Lemm, and other merchants. Charm vendors, Geo-trade vendors, and collectible buyers across Hallownest.
  • Nailsmith. Forges the Pure Nail for 7,050 Geo and 6 Pale Ore; optional kill for the Purity achievement.

Grimm Troupe Members

The Grimm Troupe DLC adds three named NPCs that live alongside the standard cast. Per the wiki, they arrive when the Knight lights the Nightmare Lantern in the Howling Cliffs and tent up in Dirtmouth for the Flame collection questline.

  • Troupe Master Grimm. The fiery boss inside the main tent; also fought as Nightmare King Grimm in the dream form rematch.
  • Brumm. Accordion-playing Troupe member who offers the Banishment alternative ending and gets replaced by Nymm if the Knight takes that branch.
  • Divine. Tent next to Grimm's; trades Fragile Charms for Unbreakable upgrades at 9,000-15,000 Geo each.
Build Tip

Per the wiki, all three Grimm Troupe NPCs leave Dirtmouth on either ending: the Ritual ending they leave after the Nightmare King fight, the Banishment ending they vanish when the Lantern breaks. In actual play, finish any pending Divine Fragile-to-Unbreakable upgrades before committing to either ending, since the Troupe is gone for the rest of that save.

Higher Beings and Lore Figures

The lore axis sits one layer above the visible cast. Per the wiki, the Higher Beings shape Hallownest's history through belief, with the Pale King and Radiance the two most directly relevant.

  • The Pale King. Wyrm-turned-king who built Hallownest; father of the Knight, Hollow Knight, and Hornet. Found dead in the White Palace.
  • The White Lady. Root-being queen; mother of the Knight and Hollow Knight. Found alive in Queen's Gardens.
  • The Radiance. Moth-being whose dream returned as the Infection; final boss of the Dream No More ending.
  • Unn. Slug-being older than the Pale King; shrine in Lake of Unn under Greenpath.
  • The Nightmare's Heart. The higher being that enslaves the Grimm Troupe; unfought, in-fiction only.
  • The Wyrm. Pale King's original form; the corpse in Ancient Basin is the original Wyrm shell.

Common Mistakes

  1. Conflating the Knight with the Hollow Knight. Per the wiki, these are two separate Vessels. The playable protagonist is "the Knight"; the sealed final boss is "the Hollow Knight." The Hollow Knight is the older sibling chosen for the sealing role; the Knight is a discarded sibling.
  2. Thinking Hornet is the Knight's full sister. The wiki specifies same father, different mothers. Hornet is the Pale King's daughter with Herrah of Deepnest, not the White Lady. She is a half-sibling on the father side.
  3. Missing Quirrel's nine encounters. Per the wiki, Quirrel has nine fixed scripted encounters; the Witness achievement requires finding him at each, especially the Crystal Peak bench that most players skip.
  4. Forgetting Cloth has two save points. The wiki specifies Cloth must be saved in two locations to trigger the Traitor Lord help-fight ending. Skipping either save leaves her in Dirtmouth at Sly's shop instead.
  5. Treating Nymm as a different character. Per the wiki, Nymm is Brumm "freed from the Master's binding" on the Banishment branch. Same character at the same location, with no Troupe memory.

Who are the three Dreamers?

Monomon the Teacher, Lurien the Watcher, and Herrah the Beast. Per the wiki, each Dreamer volunteered or bargained their way into the Dream Realm to hold the Black Egg seal on the Hollow Knight. Killing all three opens the Temple of the Black Egg for the final fight.

Who is the most important Dirtmouth NPC?

Elderbug as the anchor, Sly and Iselda as the merchants. Per the wiki, Elderbug is the last remaining bug of Dirtmouth and gives Knight-of-Hallownest framing dialogue throughout the game; Sly sells nail and notch upgrades and turns out to be the former Great Nailsage.

Who is Zote in Hollow Knight?

A boastful warrior with a wooden nail. Per the wiki, Zote the Mighty arrives in Dirtmouth after the Knight rescues him from a Vengefly King near Greenpath. His nail is made of shellwood and cannot damage anything; he eventually becomes the Grey Prince Zote dream boss in Bretta's basement.

Who are the higher beings in Hollow Knight?

Are there silent characters in Hollow Knight?

Yes, all Vessels. Per the wiki, the Knight, the Hollow Knight, Pure Vessel, Broken Vessel, and every dropped Abyss Vessel are voiceless by design. The silence is the canonical Vessel trait that made the Pale King choose them as containment for the Radiance.
