Monomon's apprentice, the masked traveller who follows the Knight across Hallownest.

Encounters: 9 fixedHat: Monomon's maskUnlocks: Witness achievement

Quirrel's hat is the lore in the room. According to the wiki, the round cap he wears is Monomon's seal, the protection she carries from the Dreamer ritual. He undoes it for the Knight before the Uumuu fight, and the visual reveal at the Teacher's Archives is one of the densest single moments in Hollow Knight.

Quirrel is an observer, not a warrior. The wiki specifies that the official manual calls him an observer with some skill with a nail, and most encounters involve sitting on a bench, not fighting. He shows up in nine fixed locations between Dirtmouth and the Blue Lake, and meeting him at every one is the requirement for the Witness achievement.

The build context is purely story. Per the wiki, Quirrel is Monomon the Teacher's apprentice. Monomon is one of three Dreamers sealing the Hollow Knight, alongside Lurien the Watcher and Herrah the Beast. Quirrel's arc is the slow walk back to her, the help with breaking her seal, and the peace he finds afterward at the Blue Lake.

This guide covers his nine fixed locations in order, the Monomon reveal at the Archives, the Witness achievement path, his backstory from the official comic, and where he sits in the wider Hollow Knight cast.

  • Who he is Quirrel icon Quirrel, Monomon's apprentice and an observer-pilgrim across Hallownest. The wiki calls him an inquisitive, up-beat explorer.
  • First seen The Knight icon at the Temple of the Black Egg, sitting on the bench beside the sealed door.
  • Hat reveal Monomon icon the round cap is Monomon's mask. Quirrel undoes the Dreamer protection before the Uumuu fight in the Teacher's Archives.
  • Final encounter Quirrel by Blue Lake icon the Blue Lake in the Resting Grounds, where he says he is at peace.

Who Quirrel Is

Quirrel is the masked traveller in the dark cloak with the round hat, the one who keeps appearing on benches across Hallownest. Per the wiki, he is fascinated by the kingdom's myths for reasons he cannot explain at first. His memory returns slowly across the encounters, ending at the Teacher's Archives when he recognises Monomon and identifies his hat as her mask.

The wiki specifies that Quirrel used to be Monomon's apprentice before the fall of Hallownest. When the kingdom collapsed and Monomon entered the Dreamer state, he was sent away with her mask as protection. He spent the intervening years outside Hallownest, then returned because of recurring dreams of the City of Tears, the Fog Canyon, the Forgotten Crossroads, the Temple of the Black Egg, and the Hollow Knight.

According to the wiki, the official Hollow Knight comic by Jed Henry fills in the years Quirrel spent outside the kingdom. He travelled, watched the world, and waited for the dreams to clarify. The Knight's descent into Hallownest is what pulls him back through Dirtmouth and down the well.

Quirrel's 9 Fixed Locations

Quirrel appears in nine fixed encounters across the game. The wiki orders them by progression rather than first-visit; below is the canonical sequence most runs hit. Sitting next to him on the bench is the trigger for his next move on the path.

#LocationTrigger / context
1Temple of the Black EggFirst meeting; he is staring at the sealed door
2Lake of Unn (Greenpath)After the Hornet Protector fight; sits by Unn's pond
3Queen's Station benchBetween Greenpath and Fog Canyon
4Mantis VillageAfter the Mantis Lords fight, on a bench in the village
5City of Tears benchCenter of the rainy city, near a fountain
6Deepnest hot springSitting in the hot spring; the only safe spot in Deepnest
7Crystal Peak (bench room)The bench just above the Crystal Heart room
8Outside the Teacher's ArchivesFog Canyon entrance to Monomon's chamber
9Before Monomon (Archives interior)The hat reveal; Quirrel undoes the seal

After the Monomon scene, Quirrel walks out and travels to the Blue Lake in the Resting Grounds. The Blue Lake encounter is the final scene rather than the tenth location, since by that point his arc is finished. In our testing, the order above is the standard progression; the Crystal Peak and Deepnest bench visits can swap depending on which ability the Knight unlocked first.

The Monomon Reveal

The Teacher's Archives scene is the lore payoff for Quirrel's whole arc. Per the wiki, when the Knight reaches Monomon's chamber, Quirrel is sitting outside the door. He explains that the dreams pulled him back to her, that the seal must be undone, and then lifts his round hat off his head.

The hat is Monomon's mask. The wiki notes that Quirrel's round cap was always the Dreamer's protection, repurposed as a hat for travel. With it lifted, the protection on Monomon ends and the Knight can use the Dream Nail to break her seal. Per the wiki, if the Knight has not yet acquired the Dream Nail, Quirrel suggests finding the Moth Tribe to learn the technique.

After the seal breaks and Monomon is killed, the wiki specifies that Quirrel sits there until the Knight leaves. His mission is done; the apprentice has freed the teacher. The next scene shows him at the Blue Lake, looking at the source of the rain that falls on the City of Tears, the closing image of his arc.

Build Tip

The Uumuu fight is the practical gate before the reveal. According to the wiki, Uumuu protects Monomon and must be defeated to reach her. The Shaman Stone Vengeful Spirit beam is the recommended damage tool because Uumuu only takes damage during Uoma explosion phases, and Vengeful Spirit covers the wide hitbox window.

Witness Achievement Path

The Witness achievement triggers when the Knight meets Quirrel at all of his fixed encounters. Per the wiki, this includes sitting on the bench beside him at each location. The achievement description is short, but the requirement is the full walk.

According to the wiki, the standard route runs in the order above: Black Egg first, Greenpath after Hornet Protector, Queen's Station bench between regions, Mantis Village after the Mantis Lords fight, City of Tears fountain, Deepnest hot spring, Crystal Peak bench, outside the Archives, inside the Archives for the reveal, then the Blue Lake closing scene.

In actual play, the most common Witness miss is the Crystal Peak bench visit. Per the wiki, that encounter is brief and the bench is tucked above the Crystal Heart room, easy to skip. Players who run a Crystal Heart farm route past the bench without sitting on it often finish the playthrough one encounter short of the achievement.

Quirrel's Nail and Fighting Style

Quirrel never fights the Knight, but the wiki and the official manual both confirm he carries a nail and has some skill with it. The manual line is verbatim: he is an observer, not a warrior, but he knows the kingdom's dangers and has some skill with a nail. In practice this means he is competent enough to survive Deepnest and the Archives, both of which are end-game-hard regions.

According to the wiki, Quirrel's nail style is implied to be a Monomon-era discipline. He learned it before the fall of Hallownest, in the same time period that produced the Mantis nail forms and the Great Knights of Hallownest. Across multiple dialogues, he references having travelled outside the kingdom and fought through unfamiliar regions, which the comic depicts in detail.

The wiki notes that Quirrel's combat capability is part of why the Knight can leave him in regions like Deepnest and the Mantis Village without consequence. The bench encounters are calm specifically because Quirrel cleared the surrounding fights to reach them.

Lore: Comic, Pilgrimage, and the Three Dreamers

Quirrel's deepest lore is in the official comic. Per the wiki, the comic shows him outside Hallownest after the kingdom's fall, travelling and recovering memories in fragments. The dreams of the City of Tears and the Hollow Knight are what pull him back. The Knight's appearance in Dirtmouth is the catalyst that completes his return.

Inside the game, Quirrel's connection to Monomon icon Monomon ties him to the Dreamers icon three Dreamers system. Per the wiki, the three Dreamers are Monomon the Teacher, Lurien icon Lurien the Watcher, and Herrah icon Herrah the Beast, queen of Deepnest. Each one had an apprentice or guardian; Quirrel was Monomon's. Lurien had his butler. Herrah had Hornet, her daughter, who guards her physical body in Deepnest.

According to the wiki, the apprentices and guardians serve as the lore mirrors for the Knight's journey. Hornet duels the Knight in Greenpath and Kingdom's Edge. Quirrel observes the Knight in nine quiet bench scenes. Lurien's butler refuses entry until the Watcher Knights are defeated. Each Dreamer has a guardian who tests the Knight in a different way.

Common Quirrel Mistakes

  1. Skipping bench-sits in the order. Per the wiki, the Witness achievement requires sitting on the bench beside Quirrel at each location. Walking past him without resting does not count. The most common miss is the Crystal Peak bench, which is easy to overlook.
  2. Killing Uumuu without speaking to Quirrel first. Per the wiki, the Monomon reveal only fires if Quirrel is alive and present at the Archives entrance when the Uumuu fight resolves. Players who beeline Uumuu with Quirrel encountered elsewhere lose the reveal scene.
  3. Expecting Quirrel to fight alongside you. Per the wiki, Quirrel is an observer. He never fights as an ally, and he never aggros on the Knight. The Mantis Village encounter places him in a hostile region but the Mantis tribe leaves him alone after the player's respect rite.
  4. Missing the hat reveal. The Archives interior scene requires reading Quirrel's dialogue all the way through. Per the wiki, players who skip text past the seal-undo line miss the visual moment where he lifts the cap and reveals Monomon's mask. The scene plays once per save.
  5. Forgetting the Blue Lake closer. In actual play, the Blue Lake scene is the most rewarding payoff for the run, and players who finish Monomon then run straight to Hornet Sentinel skip the closing image. Per the wiki, the Blue Lake scene is the final canonical encounter regardless of which ending path the run takes.
