Hades 2 Tips for Beginners

Melinoe, the protagonist of Hades 2, ready for a run
Beginner Tips / Patch v1.0

The fastest way to get stronger in Hades 2 is to treat death as progress and pour every run into your Arcana Cards, Magick, and the Cauldron.

Magick: 50 baseArcana: 25 cardsDeath Defiance: 3 charges

The single best Hades 2 tip is to stop treating death as failure, because every run feeds permanent upgrades that make the next attempt easier.

Hades 2 throws a stack of systems at you in the first hour and explains about half of them. Magick, Omega Moves, Arcana Cards, Grasp, the Cauldron, and keepsakes all interlock, and knowing which to prioritize early saves a dozen frustrating runs.

You play as Melinoe, the daughter of Hades, on a quest to defeat Chronos, the Titan of Time. The wiki notes that death is a mere inconvenience for her: she returns each time to the Crossroads to upgrade, craft, and try again.

This guide covers the early-run priorities that matter, how to spend Magick, how to build your Arcana board, and the base-camp habits that turn losses into power.

  • Top priority Hecate icon unlock and upgrade Arcana Cards at the Altar of Ashes every run.
  • Spend magick Melinoe icon cast Omega Moves often; you refill to full at the start of every encounter.
  • First card Nemesis icon prioritize the Death Arcana for Death Defiance, your extra lives.
  • Common mistake grabbing a shiny Epic boon that does not fit your build over a Common one that does.

Treat Death as Progress

Dying in Hades 2 is part of the progression loop, not a setback, so you should run aggressively and bank the resources you gather.

Each time Melinoe falls, she returns to the Crossroads with whatever materials she collected, which feed permanent upgrades. The wiki specifies that her training mirrors her brother Zagreus: Arcana Cards in place of the Mirror of Night, the Nocturnal Arms, and the Cauldron in place of the House Contractor.

Before you can avoid death entirely, you can soften it. Death Defiance, unlocked with the Death Arcana Card at the Altar of Ashes, works as extra lives. When you take lethal damage you instead spend one charge, become briefly invulnerable, and restore 40% of your health and magick. You can hold up to three charges.

Build Tip

Do not hoard resources between runs. Spend Ashes on Arcana Cards and materials at the Cauldron as soon as you have them. Sitting on currency does nothing, while a spent upgrade helps on the very next attempt.

Spend Magick on Omega Moves

Magick is the resource that powers your strongest attacks, and new players leave most of their damage unused by never spending it.

According to the wiki, Melinoe starts with 50 Magick and refills to full at the beginning of every encounter. Holding the attack, special, or cast button channels an Omega version of that move, which costs Magick but hits far harder and usually adds an area or status effect.

Because the meter refills each room, banked Magick is wasted Magick. Open fights with an Omega Move, then weave in normal attacks while the meter recovers. You can raise your maximum through Arcana Cards like Persistence, certain incantations, and keepsakes such as the Silver Wheel.

Build Tip

If a room is about to end, dump your remaining Magick on an Omega Move rather than saving it. The next encounter starts you at full, so any leftover magick from the last room is simply lost.

Build Your Arcana Board

Arcana Cards are the most important permanent upgrade in Hades 2, so unlocking and arranging them should be your habit after every run.

Hecate lends Melinoe the cards at the Altar of Ashes in the Training Grounds, and the wiki calls them the spiritual successor to the Mirror of Night. At first only 9 cards are visible; obtaining one reveals the cards adjacent to it, and a total of 25 can be unlocked over time. You spend Ashes to unlock each card.

Activating a card costs Grasp, the resource that decides how many you can run at once. Each card costs between 0 and 5 Grasp, and your Grasp limit starts at 10. You can raise that ceiling with the Psyche reagent, up to 29, which lets you slot far more of the board as your run count grows.

Build Tip

Awaken the Death Arcana early and keep it slotted while you learn the bosses. Three charges of Death Defiance turn a wall like the first guardian into a beatable fight while you figure out its patterns.

Pick Boons That Fit, Not Boons That Shine

The best boon in any room is the one that supports your current build, not the highest rarity on offer.

Boons come from the Olympians, and each god leans into a theme: Zeus icon Zeus stacks lightning, Poseidon icon Poseidon adds knockback and resource drops, Aphrodite icon Aphrodite applies Weak to soften enemies, and Demeter icon Demeter freezes. A Common boon that feeds your existing damage type beats a random Epic that splits your build in half.

Pick a primary attack god early and commit to it, then look for a second god whose duo boon pairs with the first. Artemis icon Artemis crit pressure and Ares icon Ares blade rifts both layer cleanly onto most cores. In practice, a focused two-god build clears far faster than a scattered rainbow of one-off blessings.

Build Tip

Read the keyword on each boon, not just its color. Weak, Hitch, Scorch, and Freeze are status effects that stack with each other, so chasing one or two of them across a run pays off more than chasing rarity.

Work the Crossroads Between Runs

Your base camp at the Crossroads is where most of your power actually comes from, so spend a few minutes there after every attempt.

The Cauldron is the main meta-progression hub, where Melinoe crafts incantations that unlock new mechanics, regions, and permanent bonuses. The wiki notes it is unavailable on the very first night while Hecate purifies it, so do not panic when it starts locked.

Gifting Nectar to the gods and allies you meet builds relationships and unlocks their keepsakes, the equippable trinkets that shape a run. Early on, a keepsake that guarantees a specific god or boosts a stat you need can decide whether a run survives the first region.

Build Tip

Tag a recipe you are chasing so the game tracks its ingredients for you. Once you can craft the Forget-Me-Not incantation, you can mark any weapon, Arcana, or Cauldron upgrade and the interface highlights the materials you still need.

Master Cast, Dash, and Sprint

Three movement and control tools separate clean runs from chaotic ones: the Cast, the Dash, and the Sprint.

Melinoe Cast is different from the first game. The wiki states it drops a magick circle at her position that ensnares any enemy caught inside, lasting four seconds before it disappears or explodes if charged. Casting into a pack roots them in place so your Omega Moves connect on everything at once.

Dash makes Melinoe immune to all damage during the movement, so it is your primary dodge, and it can cross gaps and barriers. Sprint lets her cover ground between fights and reposition mid-encounter, which matters far more here than in the original because rooms are larger.

Build Tip

When you see a telegraphed yellow attack, Dash through it rather than away from it. The damage immunity during a Dash lets you pass through the danger zone and come out behind the enemy, set up for a counter.

Hades 2 Tips FAQ

What should I do first in Hades 2?

Unlock the Death Arcana Card at the Altar of Ashes for Death Defiance, then spend every run building your Arcana board and crafting at the Cauldron. Early progress comes from permanent upgrades, not from winning individual runs.

How does Magick work in Hades 2?

Magick is a resource that powers Omega Moves, the charged versions of your attacks. Melinoe starts with 50 Magick and refills to full at the start of each encounter, so you should spend it freely rather than banking it.

What are Arcana Cards in Hades 2?

Arcana Cards are the main permanent upgrade system, the successor to the Mirror of Night. Hecate lends 25 unlockable cards at the Altar of Ashes. You unlock them with Ashes and activate them by spending Grasp, which starts capped at 10.

How do I get Death Defiance in Hades 2?

Unlock the Death Arcana Card at the Altar of Ashes. Death Defiance acts as extra lives: taking lethal damage spends a charge, makes Melinoe briefly invulnerable, and restores 40% of her health and magick. You can hold up to three charges.

Should I take Common or Epic boons in Hades 2?

Take the boon that fits your build, regardless of rarity. A Common boon that strengthens your main damage type is usually better than an Epic boon that pulls your build in a new direction. Commit to one or two gods early.

What is Grasp in Hades 2?

Grasp is the resource that limits how many Arcana Cards you can equip at once. Each card costs 0 to 5 Grasp, and the limit starts at 10. You can raise it up to 29 using the Psyche reagent as you progress.

Why is the Cauldron locked in Hades 2?

The Cauldron is unavailable on the first night because Hecate needs to purify it. After that it becomes the main crafting hub for incantations, which unlock new regions, mechanics, and permanent upgrades for Melinoe.

Is Hades 2 hard for beginners?

Hades 2 has a learning curve because of its magick and Arcana systems, but it is built around repeated runs. Death Defiance, permanent upgrades, and optional difficulty settings let you tune the challenge while you improve.
