A padded key that bears a symbol of love. It opens one door in the Tower of Love, the locked spire that hides The Collector.
The Love Key is one of the optional key items in Hollow Knight, and the only thing it unlocks is the Tower of Love. Per the wiki, the in-game description reads "covered in padding, it bears a symbol of love," and its single use is opening a locked door in that spire in the eastern City of Tears. Behind the door waits The Collector and three trapped Grubs.
Unlike the Simple Key, the Love Key is not consumed and is not part of a four-key set. There is exactly one in the game, it is found rather than bought, and it opens exactly one door. According to the wiki, the key sits on a corpse in the southeast of the Queen's Gardens, and reaching it requires Isma's Tear so the Knight can swim through the acid that guards the pickup.
The reward behind the door is what makes the Love Key worth the detour. Per the wiki, the Tower of Love holds The Collector, a boss who has been hoarding Grubs, and clearing the tower frees three of them and hands over the Collector's Map. For anyone chasing the full Grub count, the Love Key is a required stop.
This guide covers where to find the Love Key in the Queen's Gardens, the Isma's Tear prerequisite, the route to the Tower of Love through Kingdom's Edge, The Collector fight and the rewards inside, and when in a run the key is worth picking up. It is a single-door key, so the value is entirely in what that door leads to.
A key item that opens one door in the Tower of Love.
On a corpse in the southeast Queen's Gardens, above the path to the Fungal Wastes.
Isma's Tear to swim through the acid guarding the pickup.
The Collector fight, 3 freed Grubs, and the Collector's Map.Per the wiki, the Love Key is "found on a corpse in the southeast of the
Queen's Gardens, above the path to the
Fungal Wastes." It is a single static pickup, not a purchase and not a drop, so once the Knight reaches the corpse the key is simply collected.
The Queen's Gardens are reached from the Fungal Wastes or the Royal Waterways, and the southeast corner where the key sits is one of the more acid-heavy parts of the region. According to the wiki, the corpse holding the key is tucked past a stretch of acid, which is exactly why the pickup is gated behind a movement upgrade rather than open from the first visit.
Grab the Love Key on the same trip you clear the Queen's Gardens for its other pickups. In actual play, the region is far enough off the main path that a dedicated return trip just for one key feels wasteful, so folding it into a full sweep is the efficient play.
The Love Key cannot be reached without Isma's Tear. Per the wiki, "retrieving the key requires Isma's Tear"
, the ability that lets the Knight swim safely through acid and water instead of taking damage on contact. Without it, the acid in front of the corpse is an instant barrier.
According to the wiki, Isma's Tear is found in the Royal Waterways, behind a Simple Key door and a short platforming gauntlet. That makes the Love Key a mid-to-late pickup in most runs, since the Knight has to clear the Waterways and claim Isma's Tear first. Players who try for the Love Key early bounce off the acid and have to come back.
Because Isma's Tear is also required for several other pickups and the Royal Waterways completion, the Love Key rarely needs a special trip of its own. Per the wiki, once acid swimming is unlocked, a single pass through the Queen's Gardens picks up the key alongside the region's other rewards.
The Love Key has exactly one use. Per the wiki, it "unlocks a door in the Tower of Love," the tall locked spire in the eastern
City of Tears. The tower's lower doors are sealed from the inside, so the Love Key door is the only way in.
According to the wiki, the entrance the Love Key opens is the upper door, reached from the higher route out of Kingdom's Edge
. From the King's Station area the Knight ascends toward the tower, follows the platforms left, and arrives at the door that the Love Key turns. The tower then opens downward, with a lever inside that creates a shortcut back to King's Station.

The Tower of Love exists to house one boss. Per the wiki, the door opens to The Collector
, a lanky figure who has been kidnapping and hoarding the Grubs scattered across Hallownest. The fight is a vertical scramble up the tower while the Collector hurls jarred enemies and leaps around the arena.
According to the wiki, defeating The Collector frees three Grubs
held in the tower and rewards the Collector's Map
, which marks every Grub the Knight has not yet rescued. For a Grub-hunt run, that map turns the back half of the collection from a guessing game into a checklist.
The freed Grubs count toward the rewards handed out by the Grubfather
in the Forgotten Crossroads, who pays Geo and, at the full count, the
Grubberfly's Elegy charm. The Love Key is therefore a required link in the chain for anyone going for every Grub and the charm at the end of it.
The Love Key slots naturally into the mid-to-late game, right after Isma's Tear opens up acid swimming. Picking it up at the right time avoids wasted backtracking.
In practice, most players end up with the Love Key in the same stretch of the run as the Royal Waterways and the Kingdom's Edge, since all three sit on the same eastern loop of Hallownest. Treating them as one block of progress keeps the travel tidy.
The Love Key ties into the Grub hunt, the City of Tears spires, and the wider key-item set. These spokes pick up the connected threads.
