Kingdom's Edge Hollow Knight

Kingdom’s Edge icon, the ashen eastern region in Hollow Knight
Region / Hollow Knight (Patch v1.4.3)

The easternmost region of Hallownest. Ash falls from the sky; the Wyrm corpse sits in the cliffs. Hosts Hornet Sentinel, Oro, the Hive entrance, and the Colosseum of Fools.

Boss: Hornet SentinelDrop: King’s BrandLore: Wyrm corpse

Kingdom’s Edge is the eastern border of Hallownest, an ashen cliff region built around the Pale King’s shed Wyrm shell. Per the wiki, the Caterpillar NPC Bardoon spells it out: "This ashen place is grave of Wyrm. Once told, it came to die." The falling ash is "moult. The Wyrm’s corpse decaying."

According to the wiki, the region is the canonical setting for the Hornet Sentinel rematch. Hornet returns here as the Sentinel form (the harder of her two fights); she drops the King’s Brand, which the Knight needs to access the Abyss and open the Path of Pain / true ending route.

The wiki notes Kingdom’s Edge is also the lore hub. The Pale King’s origin (a Wyrm who shed his shell here before becoming a Higher Being) is the most important reveal in the game, and Bardoon is the only in-world NPC who states it directly.

This guide covers the Tram Pass and King’s Station access routes, the Hornet Sentinel fight and King’s Brand drop, Oro’s Hut and the Dash Slash Nail Art, the Wyrm corpse and Bardoon lore, the Colosseum of Fools northern entry, the Hive southwest connector, the Cast-Off Shell pickup mechanics, Quick Slash from the breakable floor near Oro, the 420 Geo Deposit in the southern chasm, and the Primal Aspid harassment pattern.

  • What it is Kingdom’s Edge icon Ashen eastern Hallownest border; Wyrm corpse and Hornet Sentinel.
  • Gate boss Hornet Sentinel icon Hornet Sentinel; drops the King’s Brand for Abyss access.
  • Best pickup Quick Slash icon Quick Slash + Dash Slash from the breakable floor and Oro.
  • Skip when Tram Pass icon Pre-Mantis Claw and Monarch Wings; most of the region needs both.

What Kingdom’s Edge Is

Per the wiki, Kingdom’s Edge is the easternmost region of Hallownest, adjacent to the City of Tears. The geography is a vertical cliffside; ash falls constantly from above, and the lower chasms hold the oldest geological strata in the kingdom.

According to the wiki, the region is built around the Wyrm corpse. The Pale King arrived as a Wyrm before transforming into his Higher Being form; the shed shell still sits in the central cliff. The shell is the physical structure most of the rooms are carved into.

The wiki specifies the ash is the Wyrm moult decaying. Bardoon, the Caterpillar NPC in the north, frames it as a "grave" environment; the region is functionally a tomb that the surviving inhabitants (Hopper, Bluggsac, Boofly enemies) treat as home.

Access Routes

Tram Pass icon Per the wiki, Kingdom’s Edge has two canonical entry routes. The King’s Station swim route is the first-available; the Tram route is the cleanest mid-game option once the Tram Pass is in inventory.

  1. King’s Station swim. According to the wiki, the east end of the King’s Station (City of Tears) leads to a ruined Stagway submerged in water. Swimming east through the tunnel opens directly into the central cliff of Kingdom’s Edge.
  2. Tram Pass entry. Per the wiki, the Tram Pass connects Deepnest, City of Tears, Ancient Basin, and Kingdom’s Edge. The eastern tram stop sits in the lower cliff; the ascent from the stop runs through a breakable wall that opens into the central region.
  3. Hidden Station tram chain. The wiki notes Ancient Basin’s Hidden Station connects to the same tram network. Players coming from Abyss / Broken Vessel routes use this entry instead of doubling back through the City of Tears.

According to the wiki, Cornifer sells the Kingdom’s Edge map for roughly 150 Geo. The map is essential since the region is vertically tall (8+ screens) and the Primal Aspid harassment pattern makes unmapped traversal painful.

Hornet Sentinel Fight

Hornet Sentinel icon Per the wiki, Hornet Sentinel is the second Hornet fight and the harder of the two. The arena sits in the Cast-Off Shell sub-area in the east; the fight has 800 HP, three phases, and adds projectile-thread attacks to her Protector moveset.

According to the wiki, phase one repeats the Greenpath Protector pattern with slightly faster recovery. Phase two at ~50% HP adds a sphere-throw plus needle-rain combo; phase three at ~25% HP adds a grapple-pull that drags the Knight into close range.

The wiki specifies Quick Slash plus Sharp Shadow is the cleanest clear loadout. The dash-through cancels the grapple, and Quick Slash adds the burst window to punish her post-attack recovery. Mark of Pride extends the nail range so the Knight can stay out of the thread-bind pattern.

Build Tip

Pre-fight Hornet Sentinel with Channelled Nail tier or higher. Per the wiki, the Old Nail damage barely scratches her phase three; the Nailsmith upgrade chain (Sharpened, Channelled, Coiled, Pure) is the standard DPS path. Most clears bring at least Channelled Nail.

King’s Brand and Abyss Gate

King’s Brand icon Per the wiki, the King’s Brand drops on the Hornet Sentinel kill. The Brand is the key that unlocks the elevator down to the Abyss; without it, the elevator in Ancient Basin does not respond.

According to the wiki, the Brand gates four major progression beats. The Abyss descent unlocks Shade Cloak, Abyss Shriek, the Lifeblood Core, and the Void Heart transformation chain that ends on the Embrace the Void true ending. Skipping Hornet Sentinel locks the whole back half of the game.

The wiki notes the Brand pickup is automatic on the Sentinel kill. There is no second interaction; the Brand goes straight to inventory and the Ancient Basin elevator responds on the next visit.

Oro’s Hut and Dash Slash

Oro icon Per the wiki, Nailmaster Oro lives in a hut in the southeast of Kingdom’s Edge. He teaches the Dash Slash Nail Art for 800 Geo; he is the only Nailmaster in the game who charges for the lesson.

According to the wiki, Dash Slash is a forward-dash Nail Art that deals 2.5x standard nail damage across the dash distance. The move combines movement and damage in one input; it is the canonical Markoth and Pure Vessel gap-closer.

The wiki specifies Oro is the third Nailmaster brother. Mato in Howling Cliffs teaches Cyclone Slash for free; Sheo in Greenpath teaches Great Slash for free; Oro is the holdout. Learning all three plus equipping Nailmaster’s Glory triggers the brothers-reunion cinematic at Sheo’s Hut in Greenpath.

Bardoon and the Wyrm Lore

Pale King Wyrm icon Per the wiki, Bardoon is a large Caterpillar NPC sitting in the northern section of Kingdom’s Edge near the central cliff. His dialogue reveals the most important piece of Pale King lore in the game: the King arrived as a Wyrm and shed his shell here.

According to the wiki, the key Bardoon line is "This ashen place is grave of Wyrm. Once told, it came to die." Asked about the falling ash, he answers "moult. The Wyrm’s corpse decaying." Both lines frame Kingdom’s Edge as a tomb the King carved out of his own remains.

The wiki notes Bardoon’s broader dialogue covers philosophy: he calls the Knight a "small thing" and speaks of the kingdom’s fall with calm detachment. His Dream Nail reading reveals additional context about the Higher Beings; the Caterpillar species sits outside the Infection cycle.

Hive and Colosseum Entries

Per the wiki, Kingdom’s Edge connects to two major sub-areas: the Hive in the southwest, and the Colosseum of Fools in the north.

Hive icon According to the wiki, the Hive entry is a hidden breakable wall in the eastern Kingdom’s Edge. Hivelings patrol the area around the wall; Vengeful Spirit (or Shade Soul) opens it. The Hive holds the Hive Knight fight and the Hiveblood charm.

Colosseum icon The wiki specifies the Colosseum entry sits in the north top corner of Kingdom’s Edge. The climb requires Monarch Wings plus Mantis Claw; the first trial unlocks for 100 Geo paid to the Little Fool inside. The Colosseum offers a Charm Notch, a Pale Ore, and the God Tamer fight as the three-trial rewards.

Quick Slash and Geo Deposit

Quick Slash icon Per the wiki, Quick Slash is a 3-notch charm that reduces the time between nail swings by ~25%. The charm sits behind a breakable floor near Oro’s hut; Desolate Dive breaks the floor, dropping into a small chamber with the charm pickup.

According to the wiki, Quick Slash is the highest-priority pickup in Kingdom’s Edge. The DPS boost stacks with Mark of Pride and Fragile Strength for the canonical nail-build damage rotation; most Pantheon clears bring Quick Slash by default.

The wiki notes the deep chasm below Oro’s hut holds the largest Geo Deposit in the game: a single 420 Geo crystal. The deposit respawns on bench rest like all Geo Deposits; pairing the farm with Fragile Greed pushes the per-cycle payout to 504 Geo.

Common Mistakes

  1. Attempting Hornet Sentinel with Old Nail. Per the wiki, her phase three has a hard DPS check; the fight times out at roughly 4 minutes of perfect dodging. Old Nail damage falls short; Channelled Nail or higher is the canonical tier.
  2. Missing Bardoon on the first visit. According to the wiki, Bardoon sits one screen north of the central cliff. Players who skip him miss the most important Pale King lore line in the game; his "grave of Wyrm" dialogue is the only in-world reveal of the King’s origin.
  3. Skipping the Tram Pass route. The wiki specifies the King’s Station swim entry is one-way easy. The Tram route saves 5-7 minutes per visit; players who rely on the swim route on every trip burn time unnecessarily.
  4. Forgetting Quick Slash. Per the wiki, the Quick Slash chamber is hidden under a breakable floor near Oro. Players who pay for Dash Slash and leave without breaking the floor miss the single highest-DPS charm in the region.
  5. Underestimating Primal Aspids. The wiki notes Primal Aspids fire spread-shot projectiles that track the Knight. The patrol pattern across the central cliff makes unmapped traversal punishing; Lifeblood Heart plus Stalwart Shell is the cleanest sustain pair.
