Enemies turn red or blue on the music beat and only take damage from same-color weapons.
Astral Stair is the color-matching stage. Per the wiki, enemies follow the music beat and turn either red or blue, and they can only be damaged by weapons of the same color they are currently wearing. A red-weapon-only build is half-blind on this stage and a blue-only build is the other half. The intended approach is mixed loadouts that cover both colors at all times.
The Cosmic Egg is the other twist. According to the wiki, Cosmic Eggs are the special boss enemy on this stage and they can cast the same Infinite Corridor ability the player can normally obtain. Every cast halves the player's health, which makes the boss dangerous even for characters with stacked Max Health.
Three relics drop from three rooms. Trisection lives in the bottom room, Chaos Rosalia in the top room, and the Astral Stair Map in the middle room. The map itself is unusual: a static layout with teleportation doors that jump the player between predetermined points rather than free-walking pathing.
This guide covers the Level 80 Inverse Inlaid Library unlock path, the recyclethelibrary spell shortcut, the red and blue weapon roster for color-balanced builds, the Cosmic Egg HP-halving counterplay, the teleportation door navigation, and the Castlevania Symphony of the Night CD-warning reference baked into the stage description.
Astral Stair, the fifth challenge stage. Patch 1.5.0, released 12 June 2023.
Trisection,
Chaos Rosalia,
Astral Stair Map, one per room. Two unlock paths exist. The canonical route is reaching Level 80 in Inverse Inlaid Library, which requires Inverse Mode itself to be unlocked first via Gracia's Mirror. The shortcut is the recyclethelibrary spell, cast inside the Forbidden Scrolls of Morbane.
| Route | Steps |
|---|---|
Level 80 in Inverse Inlaid Library | Unlock Inverse Mode via Gracia's Mirror, then push to Level 80 in an Inverse Inlaid Library run. The Inlaid Library library-card XP density makes it the cleanest Inverse stage for the Level 80 target |
| recyclethelibrary spell | Per the wiki, casting recyclethelibrary in the Forbidden Scrolls of Morbane unlocks Astral Stair immediately. The Forbidden Scrolls itself drops from the Bone Zone challenge stage |
| Hyper unlock | Hyper mode unlocks by default the moment the base stage opens. Hyper bonuses are +80% Gold and +10% Luck |
According to the wiki, no separate Boss Rash or coffin step gates Astral Stair. The Inverse Inlaid Library Level 80 push is the slower route but rewards stage-mastery players. The recyclethelibrary shortcut compresses the unlock into a single spell cast for players who already farmed the Bone Zone.
Astral Stair runs a Mapped spawn type, not the usual edge-of-screen spawning. Per the wiki, enemies appear at predetermined map points and the player navigates between rooms through teleportation doors. Enemies also scale per minute on top of the room-based navigation challenge.
| Stat | Normal | Hyper |
|---|---|---|
| Time limit | 20:00 | 20:00 |
| Player move speed | x1.25 | x1.9 |
| Enemy move speed | x1.25 (+0.1/min) | x1.9 (+0.1/min) |
| Projectile speed | x1 | x1.15 |
| Gold multiplier | x1.3 | x1.8 (+80%) |
| Luck bonus | Default | +10% |
| Enemy health | x1 (+0.1/min) | x1 (+0.1/min) |
| Starting spawns | 50 | 50 |
| Destructible chance | 7% (max 70% w/ Luck) | 7% |
| Max destructibles | 12 | 12 |
| Spawn type | Mapped | Mapped |
| Theme | You only happen once | You only happen once |
The wiki specifies that the per-minute scaling stacks with
Inverse Mode when both are enabled. The Mapped spawn type matters for builds that rely on edge-of-screen kite patterns. In actual play, kiting works differently here since enemies appear inside rooms rather than tracking the player from the screen edge.
The color-matching mechanic is the stage's defining rule. Per the wiki, enemies switch between red and blue on the music beat and only take damage from weapons of the same color they currently wear. A mono-color build is locked out of half the wave roster on every beat change.
According to the wiki effects block, weapons are classified into three buckets: red-only, blue-only, and both-color. The both-color bucket is the safety net. Weapons like
King Bible and most arcana effects damage either color and keep DPS uptime across beat switches.
| Color | Sample weapons | Build note |
|---|---|---|
Red | Bloody Tear, Fire Wand, Hellfire, Phiera Der Tuphello, Red Muscle, Unholy Vespers, La Robba | Fire and blood themed weapons. The wiki lists the full red roster in the effects block |
Blue | Eight The Sparrow, Cherry Bomb, Magic Wand, Holy Wand, Santa Water, La Borra, Pentagram, Crimson Shroud (despite the name) | Water, ice, and magic themed weapons. Crimson Shroud reads red but the wiki classifies it as blue |
Both | King Bible, Vandalier, Death Spiral, Flames of Misspell, 108 Bocce, Blood Astronomia (XXI) arcana, Heart of Fire (XIX) arcana | Color-neutral. Per the wiki, these are the build-safe picks for any Astral Stair run |
The wiki updated the color list in the 17 August 2023 patch, so older guides may list different weapons. Cross-check the wiki effects block before committing to a build.
Build at least one weapon from each color column plus one both-color anchor. Per the wiki, the beat switches every few seconds, so a 2-red, 2-blue, 2-both spread keeps DPS uptime across every color flip. In practice, leading with King Bible (both) as the level-1 keep-alive prevents the early-game dead-DPS window that happens when the only weapon is the wrong color.
The Cosmic Egg is the stage's special boss enemy. Per the wiki, Cosmic Eggs can cast the same Infinite Corridor ability the player can normally obtain. Every cast halves the player's current health. The boss is dangerous even for characters with high Max Health bonuses because the HP cut is percentage-based, not flat damage.
| Property | Behavior |
|---|---|
Cosmic Egg | Special boss enemy unique to Astral Stair. Spawns multiple times across the run per the wiki |
| Ability | Casts Infinite Corridor. Halves player current HP per cast |
| Color | Subject to the same red/blue color rule as other enemies. The Cosmic Egg can only be damaged by the matching color when its current tag is active |
| Counter | Burst DPS during the matching-color window. Per the wiki, killing the egg before the cast prevents the HP halving |
According to the wiki, characters with high Max Recovery (
Pummarola stack, Suor Clerici, Toastie passive) recover the HP loss faster than characters relying on Armor or Max Health. In real runs, priority-killing the egg during the matching-color window is more reliable than out-healing the cast.
Astral Stair has three stage items and three relics, distributed across the three vertically-stacked rooms. Per the wiki, the Phiera Der Tuphello and Eight The Sparrow drops are intentional: they form the Tiragis evolution pair native to this stage.
| Item / Relic | Location |
|---|---|
Phiera Der Tuphello (stage item) | Upper middle room. Pairs with Eight The Sparrow for Tiragis evolution |
Eight The Sparrow (stage item) | Lower middle room. Tiragis evolution gate |
Gold Finger (stage item, 5 total) | Five Gold Fingers, one on each row of the rooms. Contributes to the Space 54 unlock progression |
Trisection (relic) | Bottom room. Adds a third weapon slot to a per-stage limit cap |
Chaos Rosalia (relic) | Top room. Part of the Chaos pickup family (Rosalia / Lazulia / Malachite / Altemanna) |
Astral Stair Map (relic) | Middle room. Enables the in-stage map overlay so players can see the teleport door layout |
Per the wiki, collecting all three relics on a single run auto-skips the falling cutscene on every future visit. The intro cutscene where the player stands on a floating platform and plummets into a vertical hallway only plays until the relic collection is complete.
The map layout is the trickiest part of Astral Stair after the color system. According to the wiki, the map is static (no procedural generation) but uses teleportation doors that jump the player between predetermined points rather than free-walking pathing.
| Door type | Destination |
|---|---|
| Vertical hallway top/bottom | Jump to the opposite end of the hallway per the wiki |
| Left/right side doors | Jump to the smaller rooms on each side. Each side room contains one of the stage items or relics |
| Top room door | Chaos Rosalia relic location |
| Bottom room door | Trisection relic location |
| Middle room door | Astral Stair Map relic + Phiera Der Tuphello (upper) and Eight The Sparrow (lower) stage items |
The wiki notes that the falling-platform intro is an unskippable cutscene on the first visit but auto-skips after all relics are collected. The vertical hallway is the main hub: every relic room is one door-jump away. In our testing, mentally mapping the door pattern by the second run cuts traversal time in half and frees up minutes of combat time.
Pair Astral Stair runs with the cooldown passives that keep matching-color DPS uptime steady and the XP stack that compresses the 20:00 timer.
