Hollow Knight Progression Guide

The Pure Nail, the final Nail upgrade in Hollow Knight
Progression / Hollow Knight (2017)

Power in Hallownest comes from four tracks: movement, Nail, spells, and survivability. Spend on them in the right order.

Nail tiers: 5Spells: 3 linesExtra masks: 4

Most Hollow Knight walls are not skill walls, they are power walls. A boss feels impossible mostly because your Nail, masks, or spells are a tier behind where they should be.

Progression runs on four parallel tracks: movement abilities that open the map, Pure Nail icon Nail upgrades that raise damage, spell upgrades that add burst, and survivability from masks and Soul vessels. Knowing which to chase next is the whole game plan.

The wiki confirms the Nail upgrades four times and each spell has a stronger second form. Stack those with extra health and a few key charms and the difficulty curve flattens out fast.

This guide sets a clear upgrade order: what to grab early, what to save Geo and Pale Ore for, and the survivability picks that matter more than raw damage.

  • First Mask Shard icon Mask Shards and the early Nail upgrades for survivability and damage.
  • Movement Crystal Heart icon Grab every ability on sight, they unlock everything else.
  • Spells Shade Soul icon Upgrade Vengeful Spirit to Shade Soul as soon as you can.
  • Endgame Pale Ore icon Save Pale Ore for the Pure Nail before deep optional bosses.

The Four Upgrade Tracks

Every point of power in Hollow Knight comes from one of four tracks, and they are spent with different currencies. Balancing them is what keeps you ahead of the difficulty curve.

TrackCurrencyPayoff
Crystal Heart icon MovementFound, not boughtOpens new areas and bosses
Nail icon NailGeo plus Pale OreHigher melee damage
Shade Soul icon SpellsStory progressRanged burst damage
Mask Shard icon SurvivabilityGeo and explorationMore health and Soul

Per the wiki, movement abilities are mandatory and gate the world, so they take care of their own order. The choices that matter are how you spend Geo, Pale Ore, and charm notches across the other three.

Upgrade Tip

Early on, prioritize survivability over damage. In actual play, two extra masks and a Soul upgrade carry harder boss fights than a single Nail tier does.

Movement Abilities

Grab every movement ability the moment it is available, with no exceptions. They are free, they are mandatory, and each one unlocks huge chunks of the map.

The core six are the Mothwing Cloak dash, the Mantis Claw icon Mantis Claw wall cling, the Crystal Heart icon Crystal Heart super dash, Monarch Wings icon Monarch Wings double jump, the Shade Cloak shadow dash, and the Dream Nail icon Dream Nail.

The full pickup route is covered in our walkthrough. For progression the rule is simply that movement always comes before optional upgrades, since it decides what you can even reach.

Nail Upgrades

The Nailsmith in the City of Tears upgrades your Nail four times for Geo and Pale Ore, and each tier is a flat damage jump. Per the wiki, there are six Pale Ore in the game, exactly enough for the full Pure Nail.

NailDamageCost
Old Nail5Starting weapon
Sharpened Nail9250 Geo
Channelled Nail13800 Geo + 1 Pale Ore
Coiled Nail172000 Geo + 2 Pale Ore
Pure Nail icon Pure Nail214000 Geo + 3 Pale Ore

The first two upgrades are cheap and worth rushing. The wiki notes Pale Ore icon Pale Ore is the real bottleneck, scattered in hard-to-reach spots, so plan the last two tiers around collecting it.

Spell Upgrades

Hollow Knight has three spells, and each has a stronger second form. Spells cost Soul, so they pair naturally with the Soul survivability track.

Base spellUpgradeUse
Vengeful Spirit icon Vengeful SpiritShade Soul icon Shade SoulHorizontal ranged damage
Desolate Dive icon Desolate DiveDescending Dark icon Descending DarkDown-slam, breaks floors
Howling Wraiths icon Howling WraithsAbyss Shriek icon Abyss ShriekUpward and area damage

According to the wiki, the Shade Soul upgrade roughly doubles Vengeful Spirit's damage, which makes it the highest-value spell upgrade in the game. Get it as soon as the Soul Sanctum opens.

Masks and Soul Vessels

Survivability is the track most new players underrate. More health and more Soul mean more mistakes survived and more healing per fight.

Per the wiki, Mask Shard icon Mask Shards come in groups of four, and four shards make one extra mask of health. With all 16 shards you go from five masks to nine.

The wiki specifies Vessel Fragment icon Vessel Fragments work the same way: three fragments add one Soul vessel, and all nine give you the Soul to cast and heal more often. Both are spread across the map and through vendors.

Recommended Upgrade Order

Here is a clean priority list that keeps you ahead of the bosses without backtracking for upgrades you skipped. Treat it as a default, not a rule.

  1. Grab every movement ability the instant it is reachable.
  2. Buy the Sharpened Nail early, it is cheap and doubles your output almost.
  3. Collect Mask Shards as you explore; aim for two extra masks by mid game.
  4. Upgrade Vengeful Spirit to Shade Soul once the Soul Sanctum is open.
  5. Take the Channelled and Coiled Nail as Geo and Pale Ore allow.
  6. Equip key charms: Quick Slash icon Quick Slash and a strength charm transform your damage.
  7. Save the last Pale Ore for the Pure Nail before the hardest optional bosses.

The wiki notes charms can swing damage hard: a strength charm adds 50% and Quick Slash adds 32% attack speed. Our best charms guide ranks which to slot first.

Common Mistakes

  1. Dumping all Geo into the Nail. Damage matters, but masks and Shade Soul carry fights harder than a single Nail tier early on.
  2. Hoarding Pale Ore. Spend it on the Channelled and Coiled Nail rather than sitting on it; the Pure Nail is the only reason to save the last three.
  3. Ignoring charm notches. More notches let you run stronger charm combos, which often beats raw stats.
  4. Skipping Soul vessels. More Soul means more healing and more spell casts, which is survivability and damage in one pickup.
  5. Grinding a boss underpowered. If a fight walls you, go collect a Nail tier, masks, or a charm, then return.

Hollow Knight Progression FAQ

What should I upgrade first in Hollow Knight?

Grab every movement ability on sight, buy the cheap Sharpened Nail, and collect Mask Shards. Survivability and the first Nail tier carry the early game.

How many times can you upgrade the Nail?

Four times. The Nailsmith takes you from the Old Nail through Sharpened, Channelled, and Coiled to the Pure Nail, using Geo and a total of six Pale Ore.

How much damage does the Pure Nail do?

The Pure Nail deals 21 base damage, up from the Old Nail's 5. Strength charms and Quick Slash raise that further.

What is the best spell upgrade?

Shade Soul, the upgrade to Vengeful Spirit, is the highest value. It roughly doubles the spell's damage and is available once the Soul Sanctum opens.

How many Mask Shards are there?

There are 16 Mask Shards. Four shards make one extra mask, so all 16 take you from five masks to nine.

How many Vessel Fragments are there?

There are nine Vessel Fragments. Three fragments add one Soul vessel, giving you more Soul for healing and spells.

Where do I find Pale Ore?

Pale Ore is spread across Hallownest in hard-to-reach spots, including the Crystal Peak, the Colosseum, and a Seer reward. There are six total.

Should I rush the Nail or buy charms?

Do both in step. A strength charm plus Quick Slash can outdamage a Nail tier, so spend notches and Geo together rather than favoring one.
