Hail from the Future (X) drops 1-5 items per level-up via a red d20 die that falls in a semicircle below the player. The number of dice per level uses the formula: random multiplied by max(level/40, Amount stat). At low Amount, drops stay near 1 per level. Beginning (X) adds +3 to the Amount calculation, immediately pushing drops to 4-5 per level. The compounding from Coin Bag, Gold Finger, and Orologion drops makes late Endless runs effectively rain pickups, often producing more value than Mad Groove's stage pull mechanic.

On every level-up, a red 20-sided die falls from the sky in a semicircle below the player, dropping one of 11 listed items. A single die also drops at pickup. The pickup weights match light source weights, and any multiplier to those weights also applies (Heart of Fire's 4x Nduja multiplier, Beginning's Amount addition, etc). Up to 5 dice can fall per level.
Per the official Vampire Survivors Wiki, Hail from the Future (X) was added in Patch 1.11 (15 August 2024) alongside the Darkana system. The internal ID D10_FROM_THE_FUTURE pairs the Darkana X numbering with the "future" theme. The public spell "atoural" reverses to "laruota," Italian for "the wheel," referencing the Wheel of Fortune Major Arcana card (X) in REVERSED position. The reversed Wheel symbolizes bad luck, lack of control, and unwelcome changes, fitting the random d20 dice mechanic.
| Component | Detail |
|---|---|
| Pickup drop | One die falls automatically when Hail from the Future is first acquired |
| Level-up drops | 1 to 5 dice fall in a semicircle below the player on every level up |
| Drop pool | 11 listed items, weighted identically to light source drop tables |
| Weight multipliers | Any external multiplier to light source weights (Heart of Fire 4x Nduja, etc) also applies to Hail from the Future drops |
| Gold Finger weight | Hail from the Future has its own internal multiplier of 10x for Gold Finger |
The drop pool contains 11 items. Most are passive items or pickups that grant immediate or per-run bonuses. Two items have special spawn rules:
Candybox and
Arma Dio cap at 7 per run with chances that halve on each spawn.
Gilded Clover cannot drop until the player has collected the Trisection relic in their account.
| Item | Effect | Drop Notes |
|---|---|---|
Candybox | Grants random passive item | Max 7 per run; 2.5% base chance, halves on each spawn; Luck affects |
Arma Dio | Grants random new weapon or upgrade | Max 7 per run; 2.5% base chance, halves on each spawn; Luck affects |
Rosary | Damages all enemies on screen | Standard drop weight |
Orologion | Freezes all enemies for 10 seconds | Triggers Starry Heavens with Celestial Voulge equipped |
Vacuum | Pulls all on-screen pickups to player | Standard drop weight |
Gilded Clover | Permanent +50% pickup spawn rate | Only drops AFTER Trisection relic collected |
Gold Finger | Spawns a wave of coins around player | 10x weight multiplier for this Darkana specifically |
Nduja Fritta Tanto | Player breathes fire briefly | Heart of Fire (XIX) multiplies weight by 4 |
Rerollo | +1 Reroll for level-up screen | Standard drop weight |
Sorbetto | Restores HP to full | Standard drop weight |
Coin Bag / Rich Coin Bag | Spawns coins, scales with Greed | Standard drop weight |
Up to 5 dice fall per level. The formula is: random value multiplied by max(player level / 40, Amount stat). The lower of (final value, 5) is chosen for the drop count. Higher level and higher Amount both push toward the 5-dice cap. Beginning (X) adds +3 to this Amount calculation.
| Player Level | Amount Stat | With Beginning (X) | Expected Drops |
|---|---|---|---|
| 10 | 0 | No | ~1 per level (level/40 = 0.25) |
| 10 | 0 | Yes (+3 Amount) | ~3 per level (Amount = 3 wins) |
| 40 | 0 | No | ~1 per level (level/40 = 1.0) |
| 40 | 2 | Yes (+3 = 5) | ~5 per level (capped) |
| 100 | 2 | No | ~2.5 per level (level/40 = 2.5 wins) |
| 200+ | Any | Either | ~5 per level (capped at 5) |
VS
Direct answer: Beginning (X) is a roughly 3-5x value multiplier on Hail from the Future across the run.
Without Beginning, drops scale with player level / 40 OR natural Amount stat (whichever is higher). At level 20 with no Amount, that is 0.5 expected drops per level (often 1 actual). With Beginning, the Amount calculation immediately reads as 3, giving 3 drops per level from the start. By level 40, Beginning runs cap at 5 drops per level; non-Beginning runs only catch up around level 100+. Compare with our Crown growth guide for accelerated leveling. The gap compounds because faster drops mean faster levels mean more drop events.
Trigger a Weird Souls Purifier with Santa Ladonna. The Weird Souls Purifier is the upgraded form of a Rosary, granted by the Seraphic Cry weapon when its evolution conditions are met. Santa Ladonna must be the active character. Spell shortcut: atoural in Secrets menu (does NOT trigger achievement).
| Step | Action |
|---|---|
| 1 | Unlock Santa Ladonna by reaching minute 31 in Il Molise (or via spell shortcut). Santa is part of the Christmas-themed character set |
| 2 | Start any stage with arcanas enabled. Ensure the Darkasso relic is collected first (achievements only fire after Darkasso) |
| 3 | Acquire Seraphic Cry weapon during the run. Santa Ladonna does not start with it; obtain it via natural weapon offers or character starter skin |
| 4 | Pick up a Rosary pickup. With Seraphic Cry equipped, the Rosary triggers as a Weird Souls Purifier (the upgraded form) |
| 5 | The Weird Souls Purifier trigger immediately unlocks Hail from the Future (X) Darkana for use in future runs |
Three top synergies:
Beginning (X) for the +3 Amount drop count multiplier,
Crystal Cries (XII) for the Orologion-to-Crystallized-Souls feedback loop, and
Hidden Anathema (III) for Nduja-triggered stat boosts that compound with leveling speed.
| Synergy | Why It Works |
|---|---|
Beginning (X) | Adds +3 to Amount calculation, immediately pushing dice count to 4-5 per level |
Crystal Cries (XII) Darkana | Hail drops Orologions; Crystal Cries turns frozen kills into Crystallized Souls (Growth, Recovery, Max Health) which speeds up leveling and produces more Hail drops |
Hidden Anathema (III) Darkana | Nduja drops trigger random stat boosts; faster leveling produces more drops, more stat boosts |
Heart of Fire (XIX) | Multiplies Nduja drop weight by 4, making fire breath one of the most common drops |
Awake (IV) | Grants +1 Amount, which contributes directly to the dice count formula |
Trisection relic | Required to unlock Gilded Clover drops; without Trisection, the drop pool is effectively 10 items instead of 11 |
Run Santa Ladonna or any high-Growth character. Pick Beginning (X) at 11:00 boss, Hail from the Future at 21:00, and Crystal Cries (XII) at 31:00. Stack
Amount via Empty Tome and weapon levels. The Heart of Fire weapon list is also worth running for the Nduja x4 multiplier.
| Slot | Item |
|---|---|
| Character | Santa Ladonna or any character with high Growth scaling |
| Stage | Cappella Magna or Holy Forbidden for high boss density and fast XP |
| Arcana 1 (11:00) | Beginning (X) for +3 Amount |
| Arcana 2 (21:00) | Hail from the Future (X) Darkana |
| Arcana 3 (31:00) | Crystal Cries (XII) or Heart of Fire (XIX) |
| Carry weapon | Any Heart of Fire-listed weapon (Phieraggi, Hellfire) for Nduja x4 stacking |
| Critical passives | Crown for Growth, Stone Mask for Greed (compounds with Coin Bag drops), Empty Tome for Cooldown, evolution catalysts |
Players new to Hail from the Future run into these recurring problems:
Hail from the Future is named after the song 'Hail from the Past,' the theme for the Sandy Grave stage in Castlevania: Portrait of Ruin. The name pun swaps Past for Future to fit the Darkana naming convention. The art shows a geometric icosahedron (20-sided die) referencing the dice mechanic, and the Chinese character on the card is winter (the Chinese character 'dong'), a joke on hail as winter weather. The Santa Ladonna unlock thematically reinforces the Christmas/gift-giving framing.
Per the official Vampire Survivors Wiki, Hail from the Future (X) is a Darkana that drops 1 to 5 items per level-up via a red d20 die that falls in a semicircle below the player. A single die also drops at pickup. The drop pool contains 11 items: Candybox, Arma Dio, Rosary, Orologion, Vacuum, Gilded Clover (after Trisection), Gold Finger, Nduja Fritta Tanto, Rerollo, Sorbetto, and Coin Bag plus Rich Coin Bag. Released in Patch 1.11 (August 15, 2024).
Trigger a Weird Souls Purifier with Santa Ladonna. The Weird Souls Purifier is the upgraded form of a Rosary, granted by the Seraphic Cry weapon. Santa Ladonna must be the active character; other characters wielding Seraphic Cry can also trigger Weird Souls Purifier but the achievement requires Santa specifically. See our achievements guide for the full Darkana achievement reference. Spell shortcut: type atoural in the Forbidden Scrolls of Morbane Secrets menu. The spell does NOT trigger the achievement.
Per the official wiki, up to 5 dice fall per level. The formula is: random value multiplied by max(player level divided by 40, current Amount stat). The lower of (final value, 5) is chosen for the drop count. Higher level and higher Amount both push toward the 5-dice cap. Beginning (X) adds +3 to the Amount calculation, immediately pushing drops to 4-5 per level even at low player level.
Per the wiki, Gilded Clover cannot drop from Hail from the Future until the player has collected the Trisection relic. Trisection is collected by completing specific run conditions (varies by patch). See our passive items hub for the full Trisection unlock chain. Until Trisection is unlocked, the effective drop pool is 10 items instead of 11, and the Gilded Clover slot redistributes to other items proportionally.
Per the wiki, Candybox and Arma Dio have a base chance of 2.5% each, and that chance is divided by the total number of that item already spawned. After 3 Candyboxes, the 4th has approximately 0.625% base chance. Both items also cap at 7 spawns per run as a hard limit. Luck increases the chance multiplicatively but does not bypass the cap. Stack high Luck early to maximize the first 2 to 3 spawns before the diminishing returns become severe.
Crystal Cries (XII) Darkana. Hail from the Future drops Orologions which freeze enemies; Crystal Cries turns frozen enemy kills into Crystallized Souls that grant Growth, Recovery, and Max Health. Growth speeds up leveling, which fires more Hail drops, which produces more Orologions, which produces more Crystallized Souls. The feedback loop becomes self-sustaining. Beginning (X) is the second-best pairing because it directly multiplies the dice count.
Yes. Per the wiki, Heart of Fire (XIX) multiplies Nduja Fritta Tanto drop weight by 4. The multiplier applies to both light source drops AND Hail from the Future drops. On a Heart of Fire build, Nduja becomes one of the most common Hail drops, which sustains fire breath AOE damage throughout the run. The interaction is documented alongside our Curse stat guide for late-game density math.
Early. The Darkana scales with the number of level-ups, not with run length. Picking Hail at the first arcana slot (11:00 boss) captures roughly 80 to 120 level-ups on a standard run. Picking at 31:00 captures only the final 30 to 50 level-ups. The math compounds with our Pummarola guide for sustain on long Endless runs. The dice count caps at 5 regardless of when the Darkana is picked, so early picks always provide more total drops over the run.
Hail from the Future mechanics, complete drop pool, dice count formula, Candybox and Arma Dio cap rules, Santa Ladonna unlock chain, and Castlevania: Portrait of Ruin music reference cross-referenced against the official Vampire Survivors Wiki on Weirdgloop and the Vampire Survivors Fandom Wiki, including Patch 1.11 release notes that introduced the Darkana system. In our experience, the wiki Hail from the Future (X) page is the definitive single reference for the dice math formula and drop weight rules.
