Mad Groove (VIII) does NOT trigger every 2 minutes after pickup. The trigger is the EVEN-MINUTE in-game timer. If the player picks up Mad Groove at 13:35, it pulses immediately, then again at 14:00, 16:00, 18:00. The arcana lines up with even-minute boss timing, which is why most players underrate the synergy with the 11:00 Arcana boss (the next pulse hits at 12:00, dropping the chest into the player's hands).

While Mad Groove (VIII) is active, every 2 minutes (timer-based, not interval-based) all stage items, pickups, treasure chests, experience gems, and light sources are immediately moved into a circle around the player. The pulse triggers immediately on pickup, then on every even-minute mark afterward.
Per the official Vampire Survivors Wiki, Mad Groove (VIII) was added in Patch 0.7.2 (9 June 2022). The internal ID T08_MAD_FOREST references the Mad Forest stage where the arcana is unlocked, which itself takes its name from the Mad Forest theme song from Castlevania III: Dracula's Curse (background music for the Forest of Darkness).
| Item Type | Pulled? |
|---|---|
Stage items (passives spawned on the map) | Yes |
Treasure Chests | Yes |
Experience Gems | Yes |
Coin Bags | Yes (counts as a pickup) |
| Light sources (lamps, candles, torches) | Yes |
Cursed Cheese (Dairy Plant Yellow Sign secret) | Yes (with Yellow Sign collected) |
The pulse is based on the in-game timer, NOT the moment of pickup. Picking up Mad Groove at any time triggers the first pulse instantly, then subsequent pulses fire on every even-minute mark (00:00, 02:00, 04:00... 12:00, 14:00... 30:00). The misconception that Mad Groove pulses every 2 minutes after pickup is one of the most common timing mistakes.
| Pickup Time | First Pulse | Subsequent Pulses |
|---|---|---|
| 00:00 (run start) | Immediate | 02:00, 04:00, 06:00, 08:00, 10:00... |
| 11:30 (after Arcana boss) | Immediate (11:30) | 12:00, 14:00, 16:00, 18:00, 20:00... |
| 13:35 (mid-run) | Immediate (13:35) | 14:00, 16:00, 18:00, 20:00, 22:00... |
| 21:30 (second Arcana boss) | Immediate (21:30) | 22:00, 24:00, 26:00, 28:00... |
Mad Groove does not attract relics or Gold Fingers when those are stage items (in Astral Stair or Space 54). Some passives only spawn their corresponding Atlantean enemy if the item is PICKED UP, not just pulled. Light sources spawned by Greatest Jubilee or Trapper Cardea are pulled, but the items dropped from those light sources require the player to walk over them after the pulse.
| Excluded | Why |
|---|---|
Relics | Relics are NOT considered stage items; they require manual collection |
Gold Fingers (in Astral Stair, Space 54) | When Gold Fingers are stage items on these specific maps, Mad Groove does not pull them |
Per the official wiki, Gold Ring, Silver Ring, Metaglio Left, and Metaglio Right will only spawn their corresponding Atlantean enemy if the player PICKS UP the item, not just if Mad Groove pulls it nearby. The distinction matters on stages with these passives because the player still needs to walk over the items after the pulse to trigger the Atlantean spawn. Pulling without picking does not satisfy the spawn condition.
| Passive | Atlantean Spawned |
|---|---|
Gold Ring | Atlantean Megalo Crab (Stage: Moongolow, Holy Forbidden) |
Silver Ring | Atlantean Cetolus (Stage: Moongolow, Holy Forbidden) |
Metaglio Left | Pair Atlantean (Stage: Moongolow, Holy Forbidden) |
Metaglio Right | Pair Atlantean (Stage: Moongolow, Holy Forbidden) |

Direct answer: Mad Groove for one-time stage clears; Edge of the Earth for sustained light source farming.
Mad Groove pulls existing stage items every 2 minutes. Edge of the Earth (VIII) is the Darkana counterpart and doubles the maximum number of light sources on the stage, plus enables a Quick Treasures toggle. The two arcanas are not redundant; Mad Groove is for collecting what already exists, Edge of the Earth is for creating more to collect. The optimal Endless build runs both: Mad Groove pulls items, Edge of the Earth respawns them faster, the player snowballs through Yellow Sign secrets and Wall Chickens at high density. Compare with our Curse stat guide for compounding density math.
Reach the 31:00 mark in Mad Forest on any run. Mad Forest is the starting stage and unlocks by default. The player simply needs to survive past 30:00 (the standard run end) into Endless Mode and pass the 31:00 timer. Spell shortcut: type laforza in the Secrets menu, or aintnobodygottimeforthat to unlock all four time-gated arcanas (Mad Groove, Out of Bounds, Disco of Gold, Silent Old Sanctuary) plus Game Killer at once.
| Step | Action |
|---|---|
| 1 | Unlock Endless Mode by collecting the Seventh Trumpet relic in Cappella Magna (or by typing forbiddenseventh in the Secrets menu) |
| 2 | Start Mad Forest with a strong build (Queen Sigma works well; bring Pummarola for sustain) |
| 3 | Survive past the 30:00 standard run end into Endless Mode |
| 4 | Reach 31:00. The unlock notification fires immediately. The arcana is added to the Collection |
Stages with the most stage items benefit most.
Dairy Plant has 4 standard passives, 4 Yellow Sign hidden passives, 2 relics, 1 coffin.
Inlaid Library has dense corridor item layout.
Moongolow gates progression on the Atlantean trick.
Boss Rash is the only place where Mad Groove is the SOLE way to access stage items.
| Stage | Why It Works |
|---|---|
Boss Rash | Mad Groove is the ONLY way to access stage items here, including the Yellow Sign secrets. Without it, those items are unreachable. See our bosses guide for the full Boss Rash boss reference. |
Dairy Plant | Auto-collects Cursed Cheese, all 4 Yellow Sign passives, Milky Way Map, Ars Gouda, Poppea coffin |
Inlaid Library | Dense item layout in corridors; Mad Groove eliminates backtracking |
Moongolow | Gold Ring, Silver Ring, Metaglios all spawn here; Mad Groove pulls them but player must walk over to spawn Atlanteans |
Gallo Tower | Multiple stage passives plus Randomazzo relic location (relic itself is NOT pulled) |
High Magnet stat lets the player attract Experience Gems and pickups without moving after a Mad Groove pulse.
Sarabande of Healing (VI) doubles healing from pulled Floor Chickens. Hidden Anathema (III) Darkana converts pulled food into stat bonuses. Heart of Fire (XIX) AOE compounds with the centralized enemy density Mad Groove creates.
| Item | Why It Works |
|---|---|
High Magnet stat | Magnet attracts pulled items toward player without movement; near-zero positioning needed after pulse |
Sarabande of Healing (VI) | Doubles healing from pulled Floor Chickens; recovery damages nearby enemies |
| Hidden Anathema (III) Darkana | Pulled food (Floor Chicken, Wall Chicken) grants random stat bonuses; compounds with Mad Groove density |
Heart of Fire (XIX) | Mad Groove pulls XP gems and items but also concentrates enemies; Heart of Fire AOE clears them |
| Edge of the Earth (VIII) Darkana | Doubles light sources on stage; Mad Groove pulls double the food drops on next pulse |
Yellow Sign relic, every Yellow Sign passive on every stage becomes Mad Groove-eligible. A single Endless Mad Forest run with both arcana picks dedicated to Mad Groove + a stage with Yellow Sign passives can yield 10+ otherwise-hidden passive items in one run.Pick Mad Groove at run start to maximize the number of pulses. The arcana scales with run duration linearly: 30-minute runs get 16 pulses (00:00 immediate, then 02:00 through 30:00 in 2-minute steps). Endless Mode runs scale indefinitely. Pair with high-Magnet builds for zero-positioning farming.
| Run Length | Total Pulses | Items Per Pulse (avg) |
|---|---|---|
| 15-minute Hyper run | 8 pulses | 5-15 items per pulse |
| 30-minute standard run | 16 pulses | 10-25 items per pulse |
| 60-minute Endless run | 31 pulses | 15-40 items per pulse |
| 120-minute deep Endless | 61 pulses | 20-50 items per pulse |
Per the official wiki and our gold farm guide, item density on stages tends to increase as the run progresses (more light source spawns, more food drops from Chickenfantry kills, more chest spawns from boss waves). The compounding effect means later pulses pull more items than earlier pulses, so picking Mad Groove early in long Endless runs yields exponentially better returns than late picks.
Players new to Mad Groove run into these recurring problems:
Mad Groove is named after the Mad Forest theme song from Castlevania III: Dracula's Curse, which was the background music for the Forest of Darkness (Block 3). The internal ID T08_MAD_FOREST preserves this reference. The spell laforza means strength in Italian and references the Strength Major Arcana (tarot card VIII), symbolizing inner peace, perseverance, and managing instincts. The mechanic of gathering scattered items into one location reflects the strength concept thematically.
Per the official Vampire Survivors Wiki, Mad Groove (VIII) pulls all stage items, pickups, treasure chests, experience gems, and light sources toward the player every 2 minutes (on even-minute timer). It triggers immediately on pickup, then every even-minute mark. The arcana does NOT pull relics or Gold Fingers when those are stage items in Astral Stair or Space 54. Released in Patch 0.7.2 (June 9, 2022).
Reach the 31:00 mark in Mad Forest on any single run. Mad Forest is the default starting stage, so the unlock requires only Endless Mode (collected via the Seventh Trumpet relic in Cappella Magna). Spell shortcut: type laforza in the Forbidden Scrolls of Morbane Secrets menu. The aintnobodygottimeforthat spell unlocks Mad Groove plus three other time-gated arcanas (Out of Bounds, Disco of Gold, Silent Old Sanctuary) and Game Killer at once.
No. The pulse is timer-based, not interval-based. Picking up Mad Groove triggers an immediate pulse, then subsequent pulses fire on every even-minute mark (00:00, 02:00, 04:00... 28:00, 30:00). Picking up at 13:35 means pulses at 13:35 (immediate), 14:00, 16:00, 18:00. This is a critical timing distinction; the 2-minute cooldown misconception is one of the most common mistakes.
Relics are excluded (Randomazzo, Yellow Sign, Forbidden Scrolls, Seventh Trumpet, Crimson Shroud, etc.). Gold Fingers are excluded when they are stage items in Astral Stair or Space 54. Some relics that look like passives are still relics and not pulled. The player still has to manually walk to relic locations even with Mad Groove active.
Three reasons. First, it works on every stage and every build, no synergy required. Second, it auto-collects Yellow Sign secrets that would otherwise require exploration (Cursed Cheese on Dairy Plant, Wall Chicken on certain stages). Third, it is the ONLY way to access stage items in Boss Rash, including the Yellow Sign secrets there. No other arcana provides that universal value.
Yes. Master Librarian from the Ode to Castlevania DLC starts with Mad Groove (VIII) baked-in. The arcana persists even on stages with arcanas disabled, which is unusual for arcana-baked-in characters. Master Librarian is the strongest character for stage-clearing achievement runs because the Mad Groove pulse runs constantly. The behavior matches our passive items hub documentation for arcana-baked-in characters..
Per the official wiki, Gold Ring, Silver Ring, Metaglio Left, and Metaglio Right only spawn their corresponding Atlantean enemy if the player PICKS UP the item, not just if Mad Groove pulls it nearby. Mad Groove pulls these items to the player, but the player must walk over them after the pull to trigger the Atlantean spawn. Pair with our Empty Tome guide for cooldown reduction synergies. The distinction matters on Moongolow and Holy Forbidden where Atlanteans drop high-value loot.
Yes. Mad Groove (VIII) is the base arcana; Edge of the Earth (VIII) is the Darkana counterpart. The two share the Roman numeral but are functionally separate arcanas, both pickable in the same run. Mad Groove pulls existing items every 2 minutes; Edge of the Earth doubles the maximum light sources on the stage. The optimal Endless build runs both for compounding stage item density.
Mad Groove mechanics, even-minute pulse timing, exclusion rules for relics and Gold Fingers, the Atlantean spawn condition, Boss Rash exclusivity, and Castlevania III music reference cross-referenced against the official Vampire Survivors Wiki on Weirdgloop and the Vampire Survivors Fandom Wiki, including Patch 0.7.2 release notes that introduced Mad Groove and Patch 0.8.0 fix notes for the 'Reach minute 31' arcana unlock conditions. In our experience, the wiki Mad Groove (VIII) page is the definitive single reference for the timer behavior and Atlantean trick documentation.
