Vampire Survivors Passive Items

There are 34 passive items in Vampire Survivors, and most of them only exist for one reason: to evolve a specific weapon. The 17 base game normal passives unlock through standard play. Four hidden passives appear only after collecting the Yellow Sign relic. The remaining 13 are DLC-exclusive. Skipping the wrong evolution catalyst on a chest run wastes 30 minutes, so knowing which passive triggers which evolution is more important than knowing which has the strongest stats.

What are the best passive items?
Empty Tome, Duplicator, Spinach, Crown, and Pummarola benefit nearly every build. Beyond those, pick whichever evolution catalyst the run targets.
Crown
How many passive item slots are there?
Six normal slots from level-up rolls. Stage pickups bypass the limit, so a single run can carry 10 or more passives total.
Torrona Box
Do passive items get consumed by evolutions?
Yes. The catalyst passive is removed from inventory when the evolution triggers. Re-acquire from a stage spawn or another level-up roll if needed.

Which passive items go past 5 levels?
Silver Ring, Gold Ring, Metaglio Left, Metaglio Right, Outer Saboteur, and Torrona Box all cap at 9 levels. Duplicator and Tirajisu cap at 2.

How Passive Items Work

Quick Answer

Passive items modify character stats and act as evolution catalysts. Take up to 6 from level-ups; pick up unlimited extras from stage spawns. Most cap at 5 levels and provide +10% to a single stat per level. Most evolutions consume the catalyst passive when triggered.

Per the official Vampire Survivors Wiki, passive items are non-weapon items that grant stat bonuses similar to PowerUps but apply only during a single run. Per the wiki, the player can select up to 6 different passive items from level-up rolls, but stage pickups bypass that limit, allowing 10 or more passives in a single run with careful map sweeping. The Survarot of Zi'Assunta Belpaese also adds +1 passive slot after collecting a set amount of gold.

ConceptWhat It Means
Stat BoostMost passives provide +10% to one stat per level (Might, Speed, Area, Duration, etc.)
Evolution CatalystMost evolutions require holding a specific passive when an evolution chest opens
ConsumptionWhen an evolution triggers, the catalyst passive is consumed; re-acquire from stage or level-ups
Stage PickupsEach stage has dedicated passive spawn locations; up to 5 copies of some passives per run
Hidden Passives4 Yellow Sign passives only appear as stage items, never in level-up rolls
TipPlan the run around the evolution catalyst, not the stat. A passive that sits at level 1 just to trigger an evolution is more valuable than a maxed passive that contributes no evolution path.

Yellow Sign Hidden Passives (4)

Quick Answer

After collecting the Yellow Sign Yellow Sign relic from Holy Forbidden, four hidden passives spawn in fixed compass-direction locations on every normal stage. Each is guarded by an Atlantean enemy that pursues the player after pickup. These passives can NOT appear in level-up rolls and must be picked up from stages.

Per the official wiki, the Yellow Sign relic unlocks four ring-pattern passives that all cap at 9 levels. They are tied to the Eudaimonia Machine end-game content and the Inverse Mode unlock chain. The passives are placed at fixed compass directions on each normal stage.

Silver Ring
Silver RingA
Effect: Used in Infinite Corridor union (max level 9)
Unlock: Found north of starting area on each stage
Evolves: Half of Infinite Corridor union (with Gold Ring)
Gold Ring
Gold RingA
Effect: +5% Curse per level (max +40% at level 9)
Unlock: Found south of starting area on each stage
Evolves: Half of Infinite Corridor union
Metaglio Left
Metaglio LeftA
Effect: Used in Crimson Shroud union (max level 9)
Unlock: Found west of starting area on each stage
Evolves: Half of Crimson Shroud union
Metaglio Right
Metaglio RightA
Effect: +5% Curse per level (max +40% at level 9)
Unlock: Found east of starting area on each stage
Evolves: Half of Crimson Shroud union (with Metaglio Left)

The two ring passives provide additional Curse stacking on top of Skull O'Maniac and Torrona's Box. Stacking all four (Silver Ring, Gold Ring, Metaglio Left, Metaglio Right) plus Skull O'Maniac plus Torrona's Box plus the Curse PowerUp is the standard high-Curse setup for theory-craft Endless Mode runs. See our Curse stat guide for full stacking math.

Yellow Sign Passives vs. Standard Passives

Direct answer: Yellow Sign passives go to 9 levels and cannot appear in level-up rolls; standard passives cap at 5 levels and roll normally.

Yellow Sign passives are pickup-only, which means the player has to walk to compass-direction spawn locations on each stage. The trade-off is that they go past the standard 5-level cap to 9 levels, doubling the stacking potential per slot. They are also required for the Infinite Corridor and Crimson Shroud union weapons, which are both end-game targets.

DLC Passive Items (13)

Quick Answer

Five DLCs added 13 total passives. Tides of the Foscari adds Academy Badge. Operation Guns adds Weapon Power-Up. Ode to Castlevania adds Parm Aegis and Karoma's Mana. Emergency Meeting adds 8 Mini Crewmate variants. Ante Chamber adds Outer Saboteur.

Tides of the Foscari (1)

Academy Badge

Operation Guns (1)

Weapon Power-Up
Weapon Power-UpA
Effect: Upgrades a random weapon by 1 level; grants +1 Revival

Evolves: Used to evolve all Operation Guns weapons (consumed)

Per the official wiki, Weapon Power-Up is the only passive that can be acquired multiple times in a single run. It re-appears in the level-up pool after each consumption and can also be picked up from Neo Galuga stage spawns.

Ode to Castlevania (2)

Parm Aegis
Effect: +50ms invulnerability after taking damage per level (max +250ms)
Unlock: Find on The Coop, Ode to Castlevania, or Emerald Diorama

Ante Chamber (1)

Outer Saboteur
Outer SaboteurA
Effect: Sidekick that steals coins to throw at enemies (max level 9)
Unlock: Pre-equipped at start of every Ante Chamber run
Evolves: Catalyst for ALL Ante Chamber weapon evolutions

Per the official wiki, Outer Saboteur is unique because every Ante Chamber run starts with it pre-equipped. The player only needs to find the base weapons and level Outer Saboteur to 9 to unlock all four Ante Chamber evolutions: NaneInferno, Royal Flush, Cavendish, and Negative Space.

Emergency Meeting Mini Crewmates (8)

Per the official wiki, Mini Crewmates are unique among DLC passives because each only spawns in the level-up pool when the matching base weapon reaches a certain level. They provide a hidden weapon and a pet that follows the character rather than a stat bonus. All Emergency Meeting evolutions require the matching Mini Crewmate at max level. The Mini Crewmate is consumed on evolution while the pet remains.

Pickup Priority Tier List

Quick Answer

Tier S passives benefit every build. Tier A passives benefit most builds with mild conditions. Tier B passives are situational. Tier C passives are evolution-only.

DuplicatorDuplicator
CrownCrown
TierPassivesWhy
SSpinach, Empty Tome, Duplicator, CrownUniversal benefit; always-pick on every build

BPummarola, Bracer, Stone Mask, Clover, Tirajisu, Armor, Yellow Sign rings, Parm Aegis, Karoma's Mana, Mini CrewmatesSituational or evolution-specific
CWingsMovement Speed often unnecessary on builds with screen-clear weapons
TipStack S-tier passives first (Spinach, Empty Tome, Duplicator, Crown), then add the evolution catalyst the build needs. The remaining 1 to 2 slots fill with whatever the run rolls.

Build Decisions: Common Either-Or Choices

Spinach vs. Skull O'Maniac

SpinachVSSkull O'Maniac

Direct answer: Spinach for direct damage scaling, Skull O'Maniac for compounding XP.

Spinach gives +50% Might at max, directly multiplying every weapon's damage. Skull O'Maniac gives +50% Curse at max, which means more enemies and more XP gems but no direct weapon scaling. On first-clear runs, take Spinach. On established Endless Mode runs that already have weapon scaling, take both. See our Skull O'Maniac guide for full Curse-stacking math.

Hollow Heart vs. Pummarola

Hollow HeartVSPummarola

Direct answer: Hollow Heart for burst survival, Pummarola for sustained Soul Eater builds.

Hollow Heart gives +100% Max HP at max, dramatically increasing the player's health pool for taking big hits. Pummarola gives +1 HP regen per second at max, providing constant background healing. Hollow Heart is better on most builds. Pummarola is better on Soul Eater (Garlic evolution) builds because the Soul Eater scales its damage with HP healed during the run. See our Pummarola guide for Soul Eater damage math.

Empty Tome vs. Spellbinder

Empty TomeVSSpellbinder

Direct answer: Empty Tome for universal Cooldown reduction, Spellbinder for Duration-based weapon evolutions.

Empty Tome reduces all weapon Cooldowns by -40% at max, benefiting nearly every build with the sole exception of Babi-Onna. Spellbinder increases Duration by +50% at max, which is essential for King Bible to Unholy Vespers and Mannajja synergy. Most builds run both. See our Empty Tome guide and Spellbinder guide for full evolution requirements.

Crown vs. Stone Mask

CrownVSStone Mask

Direct answer: Crown for level-up speed, Stone Mask for gold farm runs.

Crown provides +40% Growth at max, which means roughly 40% more level-ups across the entire run. Stone Mask provides +50% Greed at max, increasing coin drops and value. On any combat-focused build, take Crown. On dedicated gold farm runs (Galo Espinha + Disco of Gold arcana), take Stone Mask. Many endgame builds run both. See our gold farm guide for the canonical Stone Mask build.

Bracer vs. Candelabrador

BracerVSCandelabrador

Direct answer: Candelabrador for bigger AOE on most builds; Bracer for King Bible, Knife, Runetracer, and Bone.

Candelabrador gives +50% Area at max, helping any weapon with a hitbox-based effect. Bracer gives +50% Projectile Speed at max, helping projectile-heavy weapons but hurting weapons that exit the screen too fast (Death Spiral, Hellfire). On builds with mostly direct-fire weapons, take Candelabrador. On builds with King Bible/Knife/Runetracer/Bone-style weapons, take Bracer. See our Bracer guide for the full weapon-by-weapon Speed interaction breakdown.

Passive Item Stage Spawn Reference

Quick Answer

Each stage has a fixed set of passive items that spawn on the map. Picking up duplicates from stage spawns levels the passive without using a level-up roll. Lake Foscari and Abyss Foscari can spawn 5 copies of multiple passives, making them the fastest stages for max-leveling.

Vampire Survivors Passive Items FAQ

How Many Passive Items Are There in Vampire Survivors?

There are 34 passive items total. The base game has 21 (17 normal plus 4 Yellow Sign hidden). The DLCs add 13 more: Tides of the Foscari adds 1 (Academy Badge), Operation Guns adds 1 (Weapon Power-Up), Ode to Castlevania adds 2 (Parm Aegis, Karoma's Mana), Emergency Meeting adds 8 (Mini Crewmate variants), and Ante Chamber adds 1 (Outer Saboteur).

How Many Passive Item Slots Can the Player Have?

Six slots from level-up rolls. Stage pickups bypass the limit, allowing 10 or more passives in a single run. The Survarot of Zi'Assunta Belpaese adds +1 passive slot after collecting a set amount of gold.

Are Passive Items Consumed by Evolutions?

Yes. When a weapon evolution triggers (typically on a 10-minute chest), the catalyst passive is removed from inventory. The base weapon is replaced with the evolved version. Re-acquire the passive from a stage spawn or another level-up roll if other weapons in the build still need it.

What Are the Best Passive Items?

Spinach, Empty Tome, Duplicator, and Crown are S-tier and benefit every build. Hollow Heart, Spellbinder, Candelabrador, Skull O'Maniac, Torrona's Box, and Attractorb are A-tier on most builds. Beyond those, prioritize whichever passive serves as the evolution catalyst for the build's main carry weapon.

How Do I Unlock All the Passive Items?

Each passive has its own unlock condition. Most unlock by reaching a milestone in a single run (level a specific weapon, survive a duration, hold X different weapons). The 4 Yellow Sign passives unlock by collecting the Yellow Sign relic from Holy Forbidden. DLC passives unlock through their respective DLC content.

Which Passive Items Have More Than 5 Levels?

The 4 Yellow Sign hidden passives (Silver Ring, Gold Ring, Metaglio Left, Metaglio Right) cap at 9 levels. Torrona's Box also caps at 9 levels (with the level 9 Curse penalty). Outer Saboteur from Ante Chamber caps at 9 levels. Duplicator and Tirajisu cap at 2 levels (the lowest of any standard passive). Most other passives cap at 5 levels.

Can I Pick Up the Same Passive Multiple Times in One Run?

Per the official wiki, most passives are unique and cannot be acquired more than once per run. The exceptions are Weapon Power-Up (which re-appears in the level-up pool after each consumption) and Familiars from Familiar Forge (which can be acquired multiple times). Picking up the same passive from a stage spawn levels it without consuming a level-up roll.

What Is the Difference Between Normal and Special Passives?

Normal passives appear in level-up rolls after their unlock condition is met. Special passives only appear as stage items and never in level-up rolls. The 4 Yellow Sign passives, Parm Aegis, Karoma's Mana, and Mini Crewmates are all special passives. Outer Saboteur is special in a different way: it is pre-equipped at the start of every Ante Chamber run.
