Alucard Vampire Survivors

Alucard is the dhampir son of Dracula and one of the strongest characters in the Ode to Castlevania DLC. His kit packs +100 Max Health, +2 Armor, +50% Move Speed, immunity to health drain, and four hidden ability triggers. This guide covers the Doppelganger unlock path with Trevor Belmont, every hidden ability condition, the Alucart Sworb double-evolution chain, and the meta Alucard Shield build that absorbs six evolved weapons into one slot.

How To Unlock Alucard

DLC requirement

Alucard is exclusive to the Ode to Castlevania DLC. You also need to have unlocked Trevor Belmont (which requires Leon Belmont first). Plan your character progression accordingly.

Prerequisite Chain: Leon → Trevor → Alucard

Unlock Leon Belmont by opening the first coffin in Ode to Castlevania (east of the starting location near the Tirajisù passive item).
Unlock Trevor Belmont by defeating the Giant Medusa Head boss while playing as Leon Belmont. Giant Medusa Head is in the Castle Entrance area.
With Trevor unlocked, you are ready to attempt the Alucard unlock.

Primary Method: Defeat The Doppelganger As Trevor

The Doppelganger boss lives in the Art Gallery area of Dracula's Castle. It mimics your character's appearance and fights in a 2D scroller perspective, not the standard top-down view.

Start the Ode to Castlevania stage as Trevor Belmont.
Travel to the Giant Medusa Head spawn point. This is your navigation anchor.
From there, head north and follow the red carpet until you reach a room with grey tiles.
Go west and move upward when possible, eventually finding an entryway to a brown corridor on the right.
The Doppelganger is in the center of that brown corridor.
When you engage the fight, the screen shifts to 2D scroller perspective. You lose all weapons except your base weapon. You gain the ability to jump.
The Doppelganger has only two attacks: a thrown dagger aimed at you and a Rune Tracer-style bouncing projectile. Dodge both while dealing damage.
Defeat the Doppelganger to unlock Alucard. He can then be purchased for 1,000 gold.

Alternative: Forbidden Scrolls Spell

If you have the Forbidden Scrolls of Morbane (Secrets menu), cast adrianfahrenheit. This is a reference to Alucard's real name, Adrian Fahrenheit Tepes. The spell unlocks Alucard instantly, though you still need the Ode to Castlevania DLC and the 1,000 gold cost.

Alucard's Four Hidden Abilities Explained

Alucard has four hidden abilities that trigger automatically under specific conditions. All four reference spells he casts in Castlevania: Symphony of the Night. Most players never discover all four because the trigger conditions are not shown in the UI.

Trigger ConditionHidden AbilityWhat It Does
Charge (stand still 30s)Soul StealStand still for 30 seconds to charge and release a Soul Steal magic blast. Heals Alucard based on damage dealt to enemies caught in the blast.
Level UpDark InfernoTriggers automatically every time Alucard levels up. Flame burst dealing AoE damage around the character.
Overheal +8 HPSummon SpiritWhen Alucard is healed beyond his current max HP by at least 8 points, a spirit companion is summoned to fight alongside him briefly.
HP-Critical (very low HP)Sword BrothersWhen Alucard's HP drops to critical levels, summons phantom sword allies that deal continuous damage around him.
Stacking all four triggers

A skilled Alucard player can cycle all four abilities constantly: stand still briefly to charge Soul Steal, level up frequently via Growth stacking to proc Dark Inferno, run healing food + high Recovery to constantly overheal and trigger Summon Spirit, and intentionally dip into low HP for Sword Brothers. This turns Alucard into a spell-casting machine.

Special Ode To Castlevania Pickups

Alucard can find special Ode to Castlevania pickups from light sources, including Wall Chicken (which heals him and helps proc Summon Spirit). These pickups are exclusive to specific Castlevania characters and add another layer of survivability to his kit.

Starting Weapon: Alucart Sworb

The Alucart Sworb (yes, the spelling is intentional) is Alucard's starting weapon. In Castlevania: Symphony of the Night, the "Alucart" items are a trap version of Alucard's real gear with intentionally weaker stats. Vampire Survivors leans into the joke by making this weapon the base form that evolves into something far stronger.

Alucart Sworb Unlock Reward

Inflicting a total of 10,000 damage with the Alucart Sworb unlocks it as a selectable weapon in the weapon pool, making it available for other characters through level-up drops. This counts across multiple runs.

Alternative: Candybox Starting Weapon

After unlocking five specific items (Morning Star, Coat of Arms, Spectral Sword, Belnades' Spellbook, and Ebony Diabologue), you can swap Alucard's starting weapon to the Candybox via skin selection. Candybox grants a random weapon at the start of the run, giving you a chaotic but often overpowered opening.

Evolution Chain: Sworb → Swords → Shield

Alucard has a unique two-step evolution that does NOT require a paired passive item for the first step. The second step (Alucard Shield) is actually a "gift" weapon with unusual requirements.

Step 1: Alucart Sworb To Alucard Swords

Level the Alucart Sworb to level 8 (maximum).
That is it. No passive item needed. The evolution triggers on the next chest you open.
Bonus: evolving Alucart Sworb also unlocks Christopher Belmont as a playable character.

Color shifts with evolved weapon count

The Color-Changing Effect

Alucard Swords summons phantom apparitions that slash at enemies. The color of the phantoms changes based on how many other evolved weapons you have equipped:

Evolved Weapons OwnedPhantom ColorMeaning
0 others (base)RedAlucard Swords only
1 otherGreyOn track for Alucard Shield
2 othersGreenHalfway there
3 othersTurquoiseGetting close
4 othersYellowOne more needed
5+ othersBlueReady for Alucard Shield evolution
Developer hint

The color-changing phantoms are a deliberate visual hint from the developers telling you how many more evolved weapons you need before Alucard Shield can trigger. When you see blue phantoms, the next chest has a chance to gift you Alucard Shield.

Step 2: Alucard Swords To Alucard Shield (Gift)

Get Alucard Swords to max level (this was done in Step 1 by the auto-evolution).
Own at least 6 evolved weapons total (including Alucard Swords). Use Candybox picks and standard evolutions.
Own at least 6 maxed-out passive items.
Open any treasure chest. The chest has a chance to gift you Alucard Shield.
Alucard Shield absorbs all your evolved weapons into a single weapon slot. The weapons still trigger, but they do not occupy separate slots.
You now have 5 free weapon slots to pick up additional weapons on top of your existing evolved ones.
Why Alucard Shield is broken

Normally you are capped at 6 weapons per run. Alucard Shield breaks that cap. You can end a run with 11+ active weapons, all triggering simultaneously. The Shield itself also deals massive damage as a hovering projectile. This is one of the strongest endgame tools in the entire game.

Best Stages For Alucard

StageRatingWhy
Ode to CastlevaniaS-tierAlucard's home stage. He finds special Castlevania pickups from light sources that other characters cannot access. Best stage for the full Alucard fantasy run.
Dairy PlantS-tierEvery chest can evolve a weapon, which is essential for reaching the 6-evolution requirement for Alucard Shield. The fastest stage for shield builds.
Il MoliseA-tierOpen layout with steady enemy density. Good for farming levels to proc Dark Inferno repeatedly and for testing the Sword Brothers low-HP trigger.
Cappella MagnaA-tierStrong all-around stage with balanced enemy variety. Good default choice for Alucard if you are not chasing specific goals.
MoongolowB-tierDecent stage but not optimized for Alucard. You lose access to Castlevania pickups and the evolution advantages of Dairy Plant.

Best Arcanas And Passive Items For Alucard

Essential Arcanas

ArcanaPriorityWhy It Works
Slash (XVI)Slash (XVI)Must haveAlucard Swords already has 3x crit multiplier. Slash stacks crit chance on top, turning every 3rd or 4th hit into massive damage.
Sarabande of Healing (VI)Sarabande of Healing (VI)HighDoubles healing from food pickups. Essential for procing Summon Spirit (requires overheal by +8) consistently.
Heart of Fire (XIX)Heart of Fire (XIX)HighExtra explosive damage on AoE effects. Pairs well with Dark Inferno level-up procs.
Mad Groove (VIII)Mad Groove (VIII)MediumPulls pickups every 2 minutes. Accelerates Candybox and weapon acquisition for the shield evolution requirement.

Essential Passive Items

ItemPriorityWhat It Does
CandyboxCandyboxMust haveGives you a free random weapon. The fastest way to reach the 6-evolution requirement for Alucard Shield.
SpinachSpinachHighFlat Might bonus. Alucard Swords has high base damage (50), so Might scaling is massive.
Empty TomeEmpty TomeHighReduces cooldown. Every cooldown reduction means more Alucard Swords activations per second.
DuplicatorDuplicatorHighIncreases Amount, which spawns more phantom swords. Critical for Alucard Swords scaling.
Clover (Luck)Clover (Luck)MediumBoosts Luck, which scales crit chance. Pairs with the built-in 3x crit multiplier.

Alucard Build Strategy (Shield Path)

The best Alucard build targets Alucard Shield, which requires 6 evolved weapons and 6 maxed passives. The path is straightforward but requires careful weapon slot management.

Opening Moves (0:00 To 5:00)

Alucard starts with the Alucart Sworb. Level it to 8 as a priority. Max level auto-evolves it into Alucard Swords (no passive needed).
Pick up the Candybox when it rolls in your level-up pool. This is your fastest path to multiple evolutions.
Take Spinach, Empty Tome, and Duplicator as your first three passive items. These max out quickly and contribute to the 6-passive requirement.
Pick Slash (XVI) as your first arcana for crit stacking.

Mid-Game (5:00 To 15:00)

Alucart Sworb evolves into Alucard Swords automatically when maxed. Christopher Belmont unlocks as a side bonus.
Track your phantom color. Red = no other evolutions, you are behind. Watch for color shifts as you evolve weapons.
Add complementary weapons that evolve easily: Knife + Bracer = Thousand Edge. Fire Wand + Spinach = Hellfire. Magic Wand + Empty Tome = Holy Wand.
Maxing any standard weapon + its evolution item from a chest gives you another evolved weapon.
Pick up Clover and Sarabande of Healing for ongoing support.

Late Game (15:00+)

Once you have 6 evolved weapons (phantoms should be blue) AND 6 maxed passives, open every treasure chest you find. One of them will gift Alucard Shield.
Alucard Shield absorbs your 6 evolved weapons into one slot, opening 5 free weapon slots.
Fill those 5 slots with anything you want: more Candybox rolls, Phieraggi, Godai Shuffle, whatever you have access to.
Remember to stand still occasionally to charge Soul Steal (30 second charge time). The heal is significant at high levels.
Monitor HP carefully. Dip into low HP intentionally to proc Sword Brothers, but do not die.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who is Alucard in Vampire Survivors?

Alucard is a playable character from the Ode to Castlevania DLC. In Castlevania canon, he is Adrian Fahrenheit Tepes, the dhampir son of Dracula. His Vampire Survivors kit captures his legendary versatility: +100 Max Health, +2 Armor, +50% Move Speed, immunity to health drain, and four hidden ability triggers that reference his spells from Symphony of the Night.

How do you unlock Alucard?

Defeat the Doppelganger boss in the Art Gallery on the Ode to Castlevania map while playing as Trevor Belmont. You must have already unlocked Trevor (defeat Giant Medusa Head as Leon Belmont, who is unlocked by opening the first coffin in Ode to Castlevania). After defeating the Doppelganger with Trevor, Alucard is unlocked and can be purchased for 1,000 gold. Alternatively, cast the spell adrianfahrenheit in the Forbidden Scrolls of Morbane.

Where is the Doppelganger boss?

The Doppelganger is located in the Art Gallery area of the Ode to Castlevania map. From the Giant Medusa Head spawn point, head north and follow the red carpet until you reach a room of grey tiles. Head west and go up, then right into a brown corridor. The Doppelganger is in the center of that corridor. The screen transitions to a 2D scroller perspective when you engage, and Alucard mimics your appearance while attacking with a dagger and Rune Tracer-style projectile.

What are Alucard's hidden abilities?

Alucard has four hidden abilities triggered by specific conditions: Soul Steal (stand still for 30 seconds to charge), Dark Inferno (triggers on every level up), Summon Spirit (triggers when overhealing by +8 HP or more), and Sword Brothers (triggers when HP reaches critical). All four are spells Alucard uses in Symphony of the Night.

What is the Alucart Sworb?

The Alucart Sworb (yes, the spelling is intentional) is Alucard's starting weapon. It references the weaker Alucart Sword in Symphony of the Night, which was a trap weapon with lower stats than the real Alucard Sword. The Alucart Sworb stabs horizontally at nearby enemies, does 5 base damage (up to 35 at max level), and has a 3x critical multiplier.

How do I evolve the Alucart Sworb?

The Alucart Sworb has a unique two-step evolution. Step 1: level the Alucart Sworb to level 8 (maximum). It automatically evolves into Alucard Swords at max level, no passive item required. This also unlocks Christopher Belmont as a playable character. Step 2 (for Alucard Shield): level the Alucard Swords to max, have at least 6 evolved weapons and 6 maxed passive items, then open a chest.

What does Alucard Shield do?

Alucard Shield is the gift weapon from Alucard Swords (+ 6 evolved weapons + 6 maxed passives). It hovers in front of Alucard dealing massive damage, AND it absorbs all your other evolved weapons into a single slot, freeing up 5 weapon slots for new weapons. This is one of the strongest endgame tools in the entire game because it lets you wield 13+ weapons simultaneously.

What is the color-changing effect on Alucard Swords?

Alucard Swords changes the color of its phantom apparitions based on how many other evolved weapons you own: red (base), grey (1 evolution), green (2), turquoise (3), yellow (4), blue (5+). This is a visual hint from the developers about the Alucard Shield evolution path. Once you see blue phantoms, the shield evolution is one chest away.

What is the best build for Alucard?

The meta Alucard build targets Alucard Shield by evolving 6 different weapons alongside Alucard Swords. Take Spinach and Empty Tome early for raw damage, grab the Candybox for guaranteed evolution candidates, and stack Luck for crit scaling (Alucard Swords has a 3x crit multiplier). Once Alucard Shield triggers, you have 5 free weapon slots to fill with anything you want.

Can Alucard use a different starting weapon?

Yes. After unlocking five specific items (Morning Star, Coat of Arms, Spectral Sword, Belnades' Spellbook, and Ebony Diabologue), Alucard gains the Candybox as an alternate starting weapon via skin selection. His character pose in the selection menu changes to a mid-walk animation when Candybox is selected.
