John Morris Vampire Survivors Guide

John Morris is one of the most unique characters in the Ode to Castlevania DLC, requiring a 4-weapon evolution unlock chain and scaling his Iron Ball damage directly off Armor. This guide covers the Raging Fire, Ice Fang, Gale Force, and Rock Riot unlock path, the Iron Ball to Wrecking Ball evolution, the free Iron Blue Will (VII) arcana at level 10, the Mirror of Truth self-spawn mechanic, and the Shanoa cascade unlock.

How To Unlock John Morris

DLC requirement

John Morris is exclusive to the Ode to Castlevania DLC. His unlock is the most involved in the DLC because it requires evolving four separate weapons, each with its own prerequisite boss fight or character unlock.

Primary Method: Evolve Four Elemental Weapons

John requires you to evolve all four of these weapons, across any number of runs. After the fourth evolution, John unlocks for 500 gold purchase.

WeaponElementEvolution PathStarting Character / Boss
Raging FireRaging FireFireRaging Fire + max Spinach = SalamenderCharlotte Aulin starter (7 Mirrors of Truth after Capra Gate)
Ice FangIce FangIceIce Fang + max Spellbinder = CocytusBrachyura boss (south of Library)
Gale ForceGale ForceWindGale Force + max Bracer = Pneuma TempestasZephyr boss (Clock Tower vertical hallway)
Rock RiotRock RiotStoneRock Riot + max Stone Mask = Gemma TorporBehemoth boss (north of Ode to Castlevania spawn)

Step-By-Step Unlock Order

Unlock Charlotte Aulin first. Open the Capra Gate (defeat Paranoia at Library end), then collect 7 Mirrors of Truth from candle drops on Ode to Castlevania runs. Buy Charlotte for gold.
Evolve Raging Fire into Salamender. Play as Charlotte (or find Raging Fire in the pool), level it to 8, max Spinach to 5, open a chest.
Evolve Ice Fang into Cocytus. Head south of the Library and defeat Brachyura for Ice Fang. Level it to 8, max Spellbinder, evolve.
Evolve Gale Force into Pneuma Tempestas. Go to the Clock Tower's vertical hallway and defeat Zephyr for Gale Force. Level it to 8, max Bracer, evolve.
Evolve Rock Riot into Gemma Torpor. Go north from Ode to Castlevania spawn and defeat Behemoth for Rock Riot. Level it to 8, max Stone Mask, evolve.
After the fourth evolution, John Morris unlocks. Purchase for 500 gold.

Alternative: Forbidden Scrolls Spell

Cast beefbbq in the Forbidden Scrolls of Morbane (Secrets menu) to unlock John Morris instantly. This bypasses the entire 4-weapon evolution chain. The spell is a playful nod to John Morris sounding American in name (Quincey Morris is American in Dracula canon).

Shortcut strategy

Once you have Mad Groove (VIII) arcana and Dairy Plant stage access, you can stack multiple weapon evolutions on a single run. Dairy Plant converts every chest into an evolution, and Mad Groove pulls required passives to you. A focused Dairy Plant run can evolve 2-3 of the 4 required weapons in one session.

John's Passive Abilities Explained

John Morris has three stacked passive abilities that make him one of the most versatile characters in the DLC despite his modest starting stats.

Free Iron Blue Will (VII) At Level 10

Iron Blue Will VII arcana When John reaches level 10, he automatically gains the Iron Blue Will (VII) arcana as a free extra. This does NOT count against his normal 3-arcana limit. Iron Blue Will transforms his Iron Ball and Wrecking Ball:

  • Projectiles bounce off enemies up to 3 times (multi-target hits)
  • Occasionally have infinite Pierce (rip through screen-wide enemy lines)
  • Pass through walls (huge on Ode to Castlevania where walls block ranged attacks)

By default, most characters must sacrifice an arcana pick to get this effect. John gets it free, leaving his three standard arcana picks for pure damage scaling.

Mirror Of Truth Every 5 Levels

Mirror of Truth stage item Every 5 levels, a Mirror of Truth spawns directly above John. These are the same Mirrors of Truth used to unlock Charlotte Aulin (7 Mirrors total), which means John is a self-farming Charlotte unlock character. If you start an Ode to Castlevania run as John and push to level 35, you spawn 7 Mirrors naturally and unlock Charlotte at run end without having to hunt candles.

Special Castlevania Pickups

Like most Ode to Castlevania characters, John can find Wall Chicken and other special Castlevania stage pickups by destroying candles. These pickups restore health and provide build flexibility compared to characters from the base game who can only drop gems and coins.

Starting Weapon: Iron Ball

The Iron Ball is John's starting weapon and one of the most mechanically unique weapons in the DLC. It combines Axe-like upward throwing mechanics with Armor-based damage scaling and a retaliatory damage storage system.

How Iron Ball Works

  • Throws iron balls above the character, which then drop downward (similar to Axe)
  • On hitting the bottom of the screen, balls screen-shake the ground and bounce off the bottom edge before disappearing
  • Damage scales directly with Armor (unique to Iron Ball and Wrecking Ball in the entire game)
  • Damage received by John is stored in iron balls as retaliation damage, combining with Armor's 10% retaliatory bonus
  • Iron Ball is blocked by walls (a rare downside for ranged weapons)

Iron Ball Unlock Reward

Leveling the Iron Ball to level 4 (not 7 or 8) unlocks it for the general weapon pool. This is the fastest weapon pool unlock in the Ode to Castlevania DLC, since most require level 7-8.

Key Arcana Interactions

  • Iron Blue Will (VII): John gets this free at level 10. Projectiles bounce, pierce, and pass through walls.
  • Pale Diamond Incursion (V): Iron Ball aims at the nearest enemy instead of being thrown upward, and gains a Cooldown bonus based on Speed.

Best Stage Synergy

Gallo Tower is the ideal Iron Ball stage: the weapon's bottom-screen bounce creates massive border defense in the tight vertical arena. On Ode to Castlevania, the wall-piercing effect from Iron Blue Will becomes critical because standard ranged attacks get blocked by castle walls.

The Armor Scaling Mechanic

Armor is John Morris's core damage multiplier. Every point of Armor does three things simultaneously: reduces damage taken by 1, adds 10% retaliatory damage, and increases Iron Ball / Wrecking Ball base damage.

Armor Scaling Effects

Armor ValueDamage ReductionRetaliatory BonusIron Ball Impact
+5 Armor-5 incoming dmg+50% retaliationModerate base damage boost
+10 Armor-10 incoming dmg+100% retaliationMeaningful damage increase
+14 Armor-14 incoming dmg+140% retaliationStandard max without Awake stacking
+25 Armor-25 incoming dmg+250% retaliationDeep retaliation build
+50 Armor (cap)-50 incoming dmg+500% retaliation (MAX)Cap on retaliatory bonus

Maximum Armor Sources

Most characters cap at 14 Armor total through standard sources:

  • Armor passive item (max level 5): +5 Armor
  • Armor PowerUp (max rank 3): +3 Armor (costs 600 gold initially)
  • Awake (XI) arcana + Tirajisù: +6 Armor (3 from Awake, 2 from Tirajisù, 1 from Revival PowerUp)
Past 14 Armor = retaliation build

To push past 14 Armor, you need additional Revival stacking or character-specific bonuses. Leon Belmont gains +1 Armor from Vampire Killer. Christopher gains +1 Armor per +23% Greed. Cornell gains +2 Armor after morphing. Stack these with John's passive retaliation and Iron Blue Will for runs that approach the 50 Armor cap.

Retaliation Mechanic

In addition to Armor's built-in retaliatory damage, John's Iron Ball stores damage received from enemies and returns it through the iron balls. This means tankier builds become offensively tankier too: the more hits John takes, the more damage his next Iron Ball volley deals.

Evolution: Iron Ball To Wrecking Ball

The Wrecking Ball is a massive damage upgrade: 100 base damage (5x Iron Ball), 3.0s cooldown (down from 4.0s), Area 2 (doubled), and fires as a single very heavy projectile. It keeps the Armor scaling and the Iron Blue Will interactions.

Evolution Requirements

Level the Iron Ball to level 8 (maximum).
Pick up the Armor passive item (any level works, unlike Candelabrador for The RPG).
Open any treasure chest after the 10-minute mark.
Iron Ball evolves into Wrecking Ball.

Wrecking Ball Base Stats

Cooldown
3.0 s
Amount
1
Area
2
Knockback
5
Projectile Interval
0.2 s
Behavior
Fires very heavy projectile
Blocked By Walls
Yes

How Wrecking Ball Attacks

  • Fires a single very heavy projectile instead of multiple balls
  • Base damage of 100 (compared to Iron Ball's 20), still scales with Armor on top
  • Cooldown drops to 3.0s (from 4.0s), firing 25% faster
  • Area doubles to 2 (wider impact radius on bounce)
  • Still blocked by walls by default, but Iron Blue Will lets it pass through
  • Keeps screen-shake and bottom-bounce mechanics from Iron Ball

Cascade Unlock: Shanoa

Evolving the Wrecking Ball alone is not enough. The cascade unlock for Shanoa (Castlevania: Order of Ecclesia protagonist) requires evolving both:

  • Iron Ball → Wrecking Ball (via Armor)
  • Alucard Spear → Thunderbolt Spear (via Wings)

The two evolutions do NOT need to happen on the same run. Alucard Spear is Eric Lecarde's starting weapon, so you'll want to unlock Eric first (by evolving the base-game Javelin into Long Inus via Spellbinder).

Shanoa chain

Shanoa is the final non-secret Ode to Castlevania character to unlock, making the Iron Ball evolution a high-priority milestone. Once Shanoa is unlocked, she combined with Juste Belmont can clear any stage for the Maria Renard unlock, continuing the cascade.

Best Stages For John Morris

StageRatingWhy
Ode to CastlevaniaS-tierMandatory for Iron Ball thematic play and Wall Chicken pickups. John spawns Mirrors of Truth here, which means running Ode to Castlevania as John pre-unlocks Charlotte Aulin simultaneously.
Gallo TowerS-tierIron Ball's bottom-bounce mechanic turns the tight vertical arena into a damage corridor. Best stage for maximizing Iron Ball's ground screen-shake hits.
Dairy PlantA-tierEvery chest evolves a weapon, making the Wrecking Ball transition trivial. Armor passive spawns here.
MoongolowA-tierArmor passive available as stage item. Solid general-purpose farming for the Iron Ball evolution.
Gallo Tower (Hyper)B-tierHyper mode scales enemy damage, which pairs with John's retaliation-based Armor build. More damage in = more damage out.

Best Arcanas And Passive Items For John

Essential Arcanas

ArcanaPriorityWhy It Works
Awake (XI)Awake (XI)Must haveGrants 3 Revivals per run, and each Revival adds Armor. With Tirajisù stacking, this pushes John past the standard 14 Armor cap. Core of the Armor build.
Slash (XVI)Slash (XVI)HighAdds 4x crit damage at 5% base chance. Stacks multiplicatively with Armor-scaled Iron Ball base damage. Luck scaling helps proc rates.
Mad Groove (VIII)Mad Groove (VIII)HighPulls Armor passive and other key items toward John every 2 minutes. Essential for fast Wrecking Ball evolution.
Divine Bloodline (IX)Divine Bloodline (IX)MediumArmor already tanks damage. Divine Bloodline scales damage off Max Health - current Health delta, so John soaks hits to power his weapons. Synergizes with his retaliation kit.

Essential Passive Items

John Morris Build Strategy

Opening Moves (0:00 To 5:00)

John starts with Iron Ball. Level it to level 4 first for the weapon pool unlock, then keep pushing to level 8 for evolution.
Pick Awake (XI) as your first arcana pick for the Revival-based Armor stacking.
Grab Armor passive as soon as it appears. Max it to level 5.
Pick up Hollow Heart and Tirajisù to expand the HP pool for more retaliation storage.
Run toward level 10 to auto-receive the free Iron Blue Will (VII) arcana.

Mid-Game (5:00 To 15:00)

At level 10, Iron Blue Will kicks in. Iron Ball now bounces 3x, occasionally infinite pierces, and passes through walls.
With Iron Ball maxed + Armor in inventory, open a chest to evolve into Wrecking Ball (100 base damage).
Take Slash (XVI) as your second arcana for 4x crit damage on Armor-scaled hits.
Pick up Mad Groove (VIII) to pull items toward you, or Divine Bloodline (IX) for HP-delta damage scaling.
By level 25, you should have 3 Mirrors of Truth banked toward Charlotte Aulin's unlock.

Late Game (15:00+) - Armor Stacking

Use Revivals from Awake + Tirajisù + Revival PowerUp to stack Armor past 14.
Each additional Armor point multiplies Wrecking Ball damage and retaliatory output.
At level 35, you've spawned 7 Mirrors of Truth naturally. This pre-unlocks Charlotte Aulin at run end without additional farming.
Continue the Shanoa cascade: after this run, evolve Alucard Spear into Thunderbolt Spear on an Eric Lecarde run. Shanoa unlocks.
For endless runs, Divine Bloodline (IX) + Awake + high Armor creates a self-sustaining tank that scales damage off the damage taken.
John + Charlotte cascade tip

If you pick John Morris for your Ode to Castlevania run, you're simultaneously working toward Charlotte Aulin (via Mirror of Truth spawns every 5 levels) AND the Shanoa unlock (via Iron Ball evolution). One John run can produce two DLC character unlocks with the right planning.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who is John Morris in Vampire Survivors?

John Morris is a playable character from the Ode to Castlevania DLC. In Castlevania canon, he is the protagonist of Castlevania: Bloodlines (1994 Sega Genesis) and canonically based on Quincey Morris from Bram Stoker's novel Dracula. Not to be confused with his son Jonathan Morris (Portrait of Ruin), who is unlocked through a different cascade (evolving Hand Grenade).

How do you unlock John Morris?

Evolve four specific weapons across any number of runs: Raging Fire, Ice Fang, Gale Force, and Rock Riot. The evolutions do not need to happen in the same run. After the fourth weapon evolves, John unlocks for 500 gold. Alternatively, cast beefbbq in the Forbidden Scrolls of Morbane to unlock him instantly.

Where do the four unlock weapons come from?

All four weapons are from the Ode to Castlevania DLC. Raging Fire is Charlotte Aulin's starting weapon (unlock by collecting 7 Mirrors of Truth after Capra Gate). Ice Fang drops from the Brachyura boss south of the Library. Gale Force drops from the Zephyr boss in the Clock Tower vertical hallway. Rock Riot drops from the Behemoth boss just north of the Ode to Castlevania spawn area.

How do I evolve all four weapons?

Each requires a specific passive item at max level. Raging Fire + Spinach (max) = Salamender. Ice Fang + Spellbinder (max) = Cocytus. Gale Force + Bracer (max) = Pneuma Tempestas. Rock Riot + Stone Mask (max) = Gemma Torpor. Use Mad Groove (VIII) arcana and Dairy Plant stage to accelerate evolution pickups.

What makes John Morris special?

John has three unique passives: at level 10 he automatically gains the Iron Blue Will (VII) arcana as a free extra (makes his Iron Ball bounce 3x, occasionally gain infinite Pierce, and pass through walls). Every 5 levels he spawns a Mirror of Truth above him (this is Charlotte Aulin's unlock item, so John is a Charlotte-farm character). He also finds Wall Chicken and other Castlevania stage pickups from candles.

What is the Iron Ball?

The Iron Ball is John's starting weapon. It throws iron balls above the character that drop downward, screen-shaking the ground on impact and bouncing off the bottom before disappearing. The key mechanic: Iron Ball damage scales with Armor. Stacking Armor directly multiplies Iron Ball and Wrecking Ball damage. The weapon unlocks for the general weapon pool at just level 4, making it one of the fastest weapon pool unlocks in the DLC.

How does Iron Ball's Armor scaling work?

Each point of Armor does three things: reduces incoming damage by 1, adds 10% to retaliatory damage, and boosts Iron Ball / Wrecking Ball base damage. There is no upper limit to Armor, but the retaliatory bonus caps at +500% at 50 Armor. Most characters cap at 14 Armor: 5 from Armor passive, 3 from PowerUp, 6 from Awake arcana revival bonuses (with Tirajisù stacks). John's own passive retaliation also stores damage received in the iron balls for return fire.

How do I evolve Iron Ball to Wrecking Ball?

Level Iron Ball to level 8 (maximum), then pick up the Armor passive item (any level works, unlike some evolutions that require max level). Open any treasure chest after 10 minutes. Iron Ball evolves into Wrecking Ball: 100 base damage (5x the Iron Ball baseline), 3.0s cooldown, Area 2, fires a single very heavy projectile that retains the Armor damage scaling.

What does evolving Iron Ball unlock?

Evolving Iron Ball into Wrecking Ball plus Alucard Spear into Thunderbolt Spear (in any runs, not necessarily the same one) unlocks Shanoa (Castlevania: Order of Ecclesia protagonist). Alucard Spear is Eric Lecarde's starting weapon, and evolving Javelin unlocks Eric as a prerequisite.

What is Iron Blue Will (VII)?

Iron Blue Will is an arcana that dramatically upgrades Iron Ball and Wrecking Ball behavior. It makes projectiles bounce off enemies up to 3 times, occasionally grants infinite Pierce, and allows projectiles to pass through walls. Most characters pick this arcana manually, but John Morris gets it automatically at level 10 as a free extra arcana slot, without counting against his normal arcana limit.

What is the best John Morris build?

Focus on stacking Armor for exponential Iron Ball / Wrecking Ball damage. Pick up Armor passive, max it, and take the Armor PowerUp. Use Awake (XI) arcana for revival-based Armor stacking. Combine with Tirajisù for additional revives. At level 10, your auto-granted Iron Blue Will (VII) kicks in for bounces and wall-piercing. Use John's Mirror of Truth spawns to quickly unlock Charlotte Aulin along the way.
