Sypha Belnades is the Castlevania III: Dracula's Curse spellcaster imported into Vampire Survivors' Ode to Castlevania DLC as the definitive freeze specialist. This guide covers the Slogra and Gaibon unlock fight using Grant Danasty, the Ice Fang charge-up mechanic and Cocytus evolution with Spellbinder, the auto-equipped Jail of Crystal (XIV) arcana that gives ice, water, and light weapons a 25% freeze chance, the Belnades bloodline connection to Juste Belmont, and why Sypha has the highest level-up control stats in the game.
You need Grant Danasty unlocked first. Grant is unlocked by evolving the Water Dragon Whip (Trevor Belmont's starting weapon). If you haven't unlocked Grant yet, complete that evolution first before attempting Sypha's unlock.
Slogra and Gaibon are a classic Castlevania boss duo that first appeared in Castlevania: Rondo of Blood and Symphony of the Night:
Cast bluecipher in the Forbidden Scrolls of Morbane (Secrets menu) to unlock Sypha Belnades instantly. The spell name likely references Sypha's signature blue-hooded robe and her ice magic color palette. "Cipher" aligns with her status as a Belnades scholar and magical strategist.
Sypha Belnades is one of the most beloved characters in Castlevania history, with appearances across multiple games and the Netflix animated series.
The Netflix animated series brought Sypha to a mainstream audience. In the show she appears as one of the three main protagonists alongside Trevor Belmont and Alucard. The Netflix portrayal emphasizes her scholarly Speaker-magician background and her ice/fire magic. Her Vampire Survivors sprite design borrows visual cues from both the classic game and the Netflix version.
Sypha is the matriarch of the Belnades magical bloodline that appears throughout the Castlevania series:
This explains why the Belnades' Spellbook weapon is named after her family. The entire Spellbook system exists because of Sypha's magical legacy.
Sypha's most distinctive mechanic is starting every run with Jail of Crystal (XIV) already active, without consuming one of her three arcana slots. This is a rare base-effect arcana that a handful of Ode to Castlevania characters possess.
| Weapon | Freeze Behavior |
|---|---|
| Ice Fang / Cocytus / Speculo Ice Fang | 25% freeze chance x Luck |
| Magic Wand / Holy Wand | 25% freeze chance x Luck |
| Runetracer / NO FUTURE | 25% freeze chance x Luck |
| Eight The Sparrow / Twice Upon a Time | 25% freeze chance x Luck |
| Cygnus | 25% freeze chance x Luck |
| Bracelet / Bi-Bracelet / Tri-Bracelet | 25% freeze chance x Luck |
| Prismatic Missile / Luminaire | 25% freeze chance x Luck |
| C-U-Laser / Pronto Beam | 25% freeze chance x Luck |
| Prism Lass / Prism Damsel / Icebrand | Greatly INCREASED native freeze chance |
Despite being thematically ice/crystal weapons, Glass Fandango and Celestial Voulge do NOT benefit from Jail of Crystal (XIV). If you want to run these weapons on Sypha, you'll rely on their native freeze chances (if any) rather than the arcana scaling.
Two arcanas pair exceptionally well with Sypha's starting Jail of Crystal:
Sypha's starting weapon is Ice Fang, a Belnades' Spellbook weapon with a charge-up mechanic unlike most Vampire Survivors weapons.
Ice Fang is one of the weapons that drops from the Brachyura (giant crab) boss in the Ode to Castlevania stairwell area. Once dropped, it's added to the general weapon pool for all eligible characters via the Belnades' Spellbook. Sypha always starts with it regardless of whether you've triggered the drop elsewhere.
Ice Fang + max-level Spellbinder = Cocytus (requires evolution chest after minute 10). The name Cocytus comes from Greek mythology where it was one of the five rivers of the underworld, literally meaning "river of wailing." Dante's Inferno later depicted Cocytus as a frozen lake at the bottom of Hell where the worst traitors were trapped in ice. The name perfectly matches the weapon's ice-magic identity.
Spellbinder is required for the Cocytus evolution, but it also directly boosts Ice Fang's Duration stat, extending how long the icicles remain on screen. On Sypha's +40% Duration base, adding maxed Spellbinder pushes Ice Fang duration to nearly permanent coverage.
| Stage | Rating | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Ode to Castlevania | S-tier | Sypha's home stage. Brachyura drops Ice Fang for general pool. All Belnades spells spawn naturally. Required for Cocytus evolution chests. |
| Cappella Magna | A-tier | High gem density accelerates leveling and helps Sypha hit evolutions quickly. Good freeze density for Out of Bounds explosion chains. |
| Dairy Plant | A-tier | Every chest evolves a weapon. Great for evolving Ice Fang AND a second Belnades spell in one run. |
| Inlaid Library | B-tier | Stone Mask available. Classic stage for testing Ice Fang freeze combos on fixed enemy spawns. |
| The Bone Zone | B-tier | Dense enemy waves test Sypha's AoE freeze clearing. Stalker threat for slower Sypha builds without Move Speed stacking. |
| Arcana | Priority | Why It Works |
|---|---|---|
Out of Bounds (XII) | Must have | Freezing enemies causes damaging explosions. Stacks with Sypha's auto-equipped Jail of Crystal for massive AoE damage on every freeze proc. |
Crystal Cries (XII) | Must have | Darkana variant. Frozen enemy kills drop Crystallized Souls for Growth/Recovery/Max Health. Perfect for sustained Sypha runs. |
Slash (XVI) | High | Critical hit chance on Ice Fang and most Belnades spells. Luck-scaled crits stack with Luck-based Jail of Crystal. |
Wicked Season (XIII) | High | Periodic Luck stat boosts. Luck directly multiplies Jail of Crystal's freeze chance, compounding Sypha's core mechanic. |
Gemini (I) | Medium | Duplicates Ice Fang into a counterpart (Speculo Ice Fang) that also benefits from Jail of Crystal. Doubles Sypha's freeze uptime. |
| Item | Priority | What It Does |
|---|---|---|
Spellbinder | Must have | Required for Ice Fang → Cocytus evolution. Also boosts Duration, extending icicle lifespan on screen. |
Clover | Must have | +10% Luck per level. Directly scales Jail of Crystal's freeze chance and critical hit chance from Slash (XVI). |
Empty Tome | High | Cooldown reduction. Accelerates Ice Fang's charge cycle so freeze procs happen more frequently. |
Duplicator | High | Amount scaling. More icicle projectiles per Ice Fang cast means more freeze rolls per attack. |
Candelabrador | High | Area scaling. Expands Ice Fang's magical circle coverage, hitting more enemies per charge. |
Attractorb | Medium | Pickup radius helps collect gems and Crystallized Souls without chasing. |
Sypha has the highest combined Reroll + Skip + Banish total in the game at +30 (+10 each). This matches Queen Sigma's late-game tools. Use Banish aggressively to remove weapons that don't benefit from Jail of Crystal so every level-up choice adds to your freeze build. This is a unique advantage no other Ode to Castlevania character has to the same degree.
Sypha Belnades is a playable character in the Ode to Castlevania DLC, originally the female protagonist of Castlevania III: Dracula's Curse (1989). She traveled with Trevor Belmont, Grant Danasty, and Alucard to defeat Dracula. Sypha is also one of the main characters in the Netflix Castlevania animated series, which brought her to mainstream recognition. In Vampire Survivors, she represents the matriarch of the Belnades magical bloodline, which Juste Belmont later inherits. Her starting weapon is the Ice Fang.
You must defeat Slogra and Gaibon while playing as Grant Danasty. Slogra and Gaibon are twin bosses located west of the Giant Medusa Head in the Ode to Castlevania stage. Activate them by interacting with the rune. Grant Danasty is a prerequisite character unlocked by evolving the Water Dragon Whip (Trevor Belmont's starting weapon). Once unlocked, Sypha costs 500 gold, one of the cheapest characters in the DLC. Alternatively, cast bluecipher in the Forbidden Scrolls of Morbane.
From the Ode to Castlevania spawn point: head east into Dracula's Castle, pass through the red doors, continue east to the first opening heading north, then immediately west. Ignore the first red sigil on the floor and continue west until you reach the Giant Medusa Head boss. Slogra and Gaibon are the optional twin bosses to the west of Giant Medusa Head, activated by a rune on the floor. Use Grant Danasty's Water Dragon Whip to damage them. They drop the unlock trigger upon defeat.
Ice Fang is a Belnades' Spellbook weapon from the Ode to Castlevania DLC. It has a charge-up mechanic unique to Spellbook spells: a blue magic circle appears in front of Sypha and glows brighter as it charges. When fully charged, it releases gnashing teeth-shaped icicles that bite and chomp enemies within the area of effect. Ice Fang scales with Amount, Duration, and Area. It can be unlocked for all characters by dropping from the Brachyura (crab boss) in the Ode to Castlevania stairwell area.
Level Ice Fang to max. Pick up the Spellbinder passive item and level it to max. Open an evolution chest (after minute 10 on normal stages, or any chest in Dairy Plant, Il Molise, or Cappella Magna). Ice Fang evolves into Cocytus. The name Cocytus comes from Greek mythology where it was one of the five rivers of the underworld, literally the "river of wailing." Dante's Inferno later depicted Cocytus as a frozen lake trapping the worst sinners, tying the evolution name to Sypha's ice magic theme.
Sypha starts every run with Jail of Crystal (XIV) active, and it does NOT consume one of her three Arcana slots. This is a rare base-effect arcana that persists even if Arcanas are disabled in stage settings. Jail of Crystal gives listed weapons a 25% chance to freeze enemies (multiplied by Luck). Affected weapons include Magic Wand, Holy Wand, Runetracer, NO FUTURE, Eight The Sparrow, Twice Upon a Time, Cygnus, Bracelets, Prismatic Missile, Luminaire, and Ice Fang/Cocytus. This gives Sypha consistent freeze uptime from the first moment of a run.
The full list of Jail of Crystal-affected weapons: Magic Wand, Holy Wand, Runetracer, NO FUTURE, Eight The Sparrow, Twice Upon a Time, Cygnus, Bracelet/Bi-Bracelet/Tri-Bracelet, Prismatic Missile/Luminaire, C-U-Laser/Pronto Beam, Prism Lass/Prism Damsel, and Ice Fang/Cocytus. All gain a 25% freeze chance multiplied by Luck. Prism Lass, Prism Damsel, and Icebrand already freeze natively and get an increased freeze chance instead. Glass Fandango and Celestial Voulge do NOT benefit from Jail of Crystal despite being ice-themed.
Stack Luck aggressively because it directly multiplies Jail of Crystal's 25% freeze chance. Take Out of Bounds (XII) as your second arcana: freezing enemies causes explosions for bonus damage. Consider Crystal Cries (XII) as an alternative: frozen enemies drop Crystallized Souls for Growth, Recovery, and Max Health. Core passives: Clover (Luck), Spellbinder (Ice Fang evolution + Duration), Attractorb (pickup radius), Empty Tome (Cooldown for charge-up weapons).
Grant Danasty is one of the four Castlevania III: Dracula's Curse companions (alongside Trevor Belmont, Sypha, and Alucard). In Vampire Survivors he's unlocked by evolving the Water Dragon Whip (Trevor Belmont's starting weapon). You need Grant specifically to unlock Sypha because the unlock condition is "Defeat Slogra and Gaibon with Grant Danasty." His starting weapon is Sonic Whip, which evolves into Sonic Dash. Grant is a pirate/thief character who uses a short dagger rather than the classical Belmont whip.
Both characters share the Belnades family heritage, but have different mechanics. Sypha starts with Ice Fang + auto-equipped Jail of Crystal (XIV) + +10 Reroll/Skip/Banish trio. She's the pure-spell, freeze-focused specialist. Juste Belmont starts with Vibhuti Whip + guaranteed Belnades' Spellbook offers until level 7 + every-6-levels auto-level on equipped spells. He's the hybrid spell-and-whip generalist. Sypha is the better pick for dedicated ice/freeze builds; Juste is better for diverse multi-spell builds.
