Shatterspleen Risk of Rain 2

Shatterspleen RoR2

"Critical strikes always bleed enemies. Bleeding enemies now explode. Gain 5% critical chance. Critical Strikes bleed enemies for 240% base damage. Bleeding enemies explode on death for 400% (+400% per stack) damage, plus an additional 15% (+15% per stack) of their maximum health." Boss item dropped by the Imp Overlord. The +5% crit chance is not mentioned in the in-game description. Crits guarantee bleed - enemies that die while bleeding explode in a 16m AoE. One-shotting enemies with a crit skips the explosion entirely since bleed is never applied.

How Shatterspleen Works

Every critical hit guarantees a Bleed stack. No proc roll - if you crit, the enemy bleeds. Bleed deals 240% base damage as DoT (20% per tick, 4 ticks per second). This is the same Bleed debuff as Tri-Tip Dagger, meaning they don't independently stack on the same hit - only one Bleed is applied per hit even if you hold both items.
Death while bleeding = explosion. When any bleeding enemy dies, it detonates for 400% (+400%/stack) of your base damage plus 15% (+15%/stack) of that enemy's maximum HP in a 16m radius. The HP component is what makes Shatterspleen catastrophically strong late game - elite enemies with 10,000+ HP produce enormous explosion damage regardless of your own damage stat.
Explosion has sweet-spot falloff. The 16m blast radius is not uniform. The inner half of the radius (0-8m) deals 100% explosion damage. The outer half (8-16m) deals only 25%. Position matters - chain explosions hitting other enemies in the sweet-spot zone deal full damage.
One-shotting with a crit skips the explosion entirely. Bleed is applied after the hit is processed. If a crit kills an enemy in one shot, the enemy dies before any Bleed is registered. No Bleed = no explosion. This is the most important gotcha with Shatterspleen - glass cannon builds that deal massive single-hit damage may never see explosions at all.
The +5% crit chance is real but undocumented. The in-game item description does not mention it. Shatterspleen gives the same +5% crit as Harvester's Scythe and Predatory Instincts. Stacking Shatterspleens does not add additional crit chance - only the first stack provides the +5%.

Best Survivors

Huntress RoR2
Huntress S Tier
High attack speed means rapid-fire crits that bleed every hit. Arrow Rain blankets packs with crits simultaneously, guaranteeing every enemy bleeds at once. One death triggers a chain explosion that clears the entire group. Naturally reaches high crit with Glasses.
Railgunner RoR2
Railgunner S Tier
Weakpoint shots always crit. Every weakpoint hit bleeds the target via Shatterspleen. The key is not one-shotting - Railgunner's M1 (non-weakpoint) can chip enemies down so they die from Bleed DoT and explode, rather than dying instantly to a weakpoint crit.
Bandit RoR2
Bandit S Tier
Backstab makes all rear attacks guaranteed crits. Shatterspleen bleeds every backstab. Lights Out resets cooldowns on kill - if the kill comes from Bleed DoT after a backstab crit, Lights Out fires and resets, letting you chain into the next target with another guaranteed bleed.
Mercenary RoR2
Mercenary A Tier
Eviscerate hits multiple times per cast, each with its own crit roll. With 100% crit, every Eviscerate tick bleeds - stacking multiple Bleed DoTs on a single target. The rapid multi-hit nature prevents one-shotting, ensuring enemies live long enough to bleed and explode.
Artificer RoR2
Artificer A Tier
Flamethrower hits per tick, each capable of critting and applying Bleed. Heavy Nano-Bomb's massive damage can one-shot enemies and skip explosions - use Flamethrower as the primary bleeder and Nano-Bomb to set up explosions on weakened, already-bleeding enemies.
Loader RoR2
Loader B Tier
Strong single-hit damage is actually a liability with Shatterspleen - Loader frequently one-shots enemies and skips explosions entirely. Shatterspleen works on Loader but you need Glasses to build crit chance, and the one-shot gotcha is more common here than on any other survivor.

Key Synergies

Laser Scope RoR2Laser Scope amplifies the explosion damage component. The 400% base damage explosion is multiplied by the Laser Scope's crit multiplier. At 1 Laser Scope (3x crit damage), explosion base damage effectively becomes 1200% instead of 400%. The HP component is unaffected, but the base damage portion scales dramatically.
57 Leaf Clover Risk of Rain 257 Leaf Clover boosts crit chance, feeding more Bleed applications. More crits mean more guaranteed Bleed stacks per second. At 100% crit, every hit bleeds - Bleed stacks accumulate continuously and enemies never survive long enough to avoid an explosion death.
Harvester's Scythe RoR2Predatory Instincts RoR2Harvester's Scythe and Predatory Instincts stack crit chance with Shatterspleen. All three items give +5% crit each. With Shatterspleen + Scythe + Predatory Instincts you have 15% crit before any Glasses. Scythe also heals on every crit, providing sustain while Shatterspleen explosions clear packs.
Ignition Tank RoR2Ignition Tank + Shatterspleen on Blazing elite packs. Blazing elites drop fire trails. Ignition Tank quadruples ignite DoT. If those ignited enemies are also bleeding from Shatterspleen crits, they die bleeding and explode. Ignition Tank increases how many enemies reach a "dying while bleeding" state by killing them faster via DoT.
Tougher Times RoR2Self-damage warning at high stacks. Shatterspleen explosions can hit you if you are inside the 16m blast radius when an enemy dies. At 5+ stacks with large enemy HP pools, the explosions deal enough damage to kill you if you are in melee range. This is known as "Shatterrun" - a death caused by your own chain explosions. Tougher Times block chance helps survive accidental self-explosions.
Needletick RoR2Needletick does NOT replace Shatterspleen's Bleed with Collapse. Needletick (void Tri-Tip Dagger) applies Collapse on hit - a separate debuff. Shatterspleen's Bleed is still applied on crit independently. Both debuffs can be active on the same enemy simultaneously, and both trigger independently.

The One-Shot Gotcha - Explained

If a crit kills an enemy in one shot, no explosion happens

Bleed is applied as a debuff after hit damage is processed. If an enemy's HP drops to zero from the initial crit hit, the enemy dies before Bleed is ever registered on them. Dead enemies cannot receive debuffs. No Bleed = no explosion.

Explosion fires when:
Enemy survives the crit, receives Bleed, then dies from Bleed DoT or follow-up hits while the debuff is active.
Explosion skipped when:
Enemy HP = 0 on the same hit that would apply Bleed. Dies instantly, no debuff applied, no explosion.
The fix: use lower-damage rapid hits to apply Bleed first, then let DoT or follow-up shots finish the kill. Survivors with high attack speed and moderate hit damage (Huntress, Mercenary Eviscerate) naturally avoid this because they chip rather than burst.

Tri-Tip Dagger Interaction

Tougher Times RoR2Shatterspleen and Tri-Tip Dagger use the same Bleed debuff. They cannot both apply a Bleed on the same single hit. If a crit hit would trigger both Shatterspleen's guaranteed Bleed and Tri-Tip's chance-based Bleed, only one Bleed stack is applied - not two. This is undocumented behavior.
However, non-crit hits with Tri-Tip still apply Bleed independently. If you have both items and land a non-crit hit that rolls Tri-Tip's bleed chance, that Bleed still applies. The limitation is only per-hit - over many hits, both items contribute to keeping enemies bled through different attack types.
With 100% crit, Tri-Tip's chance to bleed becomes redundant. If every hit crits and bleeds via Shatterspleen anyway, the Tri-Tip Bleed roll never matters. At that point, Tri-Tip stacks are better spent elsewhere. Tri-Tip is more useful with Shatterspleen in early-run crit chance (below 100%) where non-crit hits would otherwise miss bleeds.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does Shatterspleen do in Risk of Rain 2?

Shatterspleen is a yellow boss item dropped by the Imp Overlord. It gives +5% critical strike chance (undocumented), causes every critical hit to guarantee a Bleed debuff (240% base damage DoT), and makes any bleeding enemy that dies explode for 400% (+400%/stack) base damage plus 15% (+15%/stack) of that enemy's maximum health in a 16m radius.

Why do enemies sometimes not explode when I kill them?

If you one-shot an enemy with a critical hit, the enemy dies before Bleed is applied. Bleed is a debuff registered after hit damage - if the hit kills the enemy outright, there is nothing to apply the debuff to. This is the most common Shatterspleen frustration. The fix is to let rapid lower-damage hits apply Bleed first, then let DoT or follow-up shots finish the kill.

Does Shatterspleen stack?

Yes. Each additional Shatterspleen adds 400% more base damage and 15% more max HP to the explosion. At 2 stacks explosions deal 800% base damage plus 30% max HP. The +5% crit chance does not stack - only the first Shatterspleen contributes crit. Additional stacks only increase explosion power.

Can Shatterspleen explosions kill you?

Yes. The 16m blast hits anyone inside the radius, including you. At high stacks fighting large HP enemies in melee range, the explosions deal enough damage to kill you. This is called "Shatterrun" - dying to your own chain explosions. Stay at range on high-stack runs, or use Tougher Times as a buffer against accidental self-damage.

Does Tri-Tip Dagger stack with Shatterspleen?

Partially. Both items use the same Bleed debuff. On any single hit, only one Bleed is applied even if both items would trigger. However across multiple hits at sub-100% crit, Tri-Tip ensures non-crit hits still have a chance to apply Bleed. At 100% crit, Shatterspleen makes every hit bleed anyway, making Tri-Tip's bleed chance redundant.

How do you get Shatterspleen?

Shatterspleen drops from the Imp Overlord when it spawns as the Teleporter Boss. Each Uncommon item that would drop from the Teleporter event has a 15% chance to become Shatterspleen instead. It cannot drop from chests. Use Artifact of Command to select it directly if it appears in the boss item pool, or Shrine of the Mountain to generate more Teleporter event drops and more 15% rolls.
