Predatory Instincts Risk of Rain 2

Predatory Instincts RoR2

"Critical strikes increase attack speed by 12%. Maximum cap of 36% (+24% per stack) attack speed." Green uncommon item unlocked via the Rapidfire challenge. Grants +5% crit chance (undocumented). On each critical hit, gain a 3-second buff stack of +12% attack speed. First item caps at 3 buff stacks (36% max). Each additional Predatory Instincts raises the cap by 2 stacks (+24%). Buff duration scales with proc coefficient. Additional items do not add more crit chance.

How Predatory Instincts Works

Each crit adds one buff stack, each stack gives +12% attack speed for 3 seconds. Critting adds a stack. Critting again before it expires adds another stack. At max stacks, each new crit refreshes the 3-second timer. At 100% crit the buff stays at max stacks permanently since you are always critting.
The item description "stacks 3 times" refers to the buff, not the item. This is the most common misconception. The in-game text means the Attack Speed On Crit buff can have up to 3 stacks. The item itself can be stacked as many times as you find it. Additional Predatory Instincts do not add crit chance but raise the buff stack cap by 2, enabling higher maximum attack speed.
Only the first Predatory Instincts gives crit chance. The +5% crit is not shown in the item description and does not stack. One item = +5% crit and 36% max attack speed. Two items = +5% crit (same) and 60% max attack speed. Three items = +5% crit and 84% max. Crit chance must come from Glasses, Shatterspleen, Harvester's Scythe, or other sources.
Buff duration is multiplied by proc coefficient. The 3-second base duration is scaled by the proc coefficient of the triggering attack. An attack with 0.5 proc coefficient that crits gives a 1.5-second buff stack. Attacks with 1.0 proc coefficient give the full 3 seconds. Low proc coefficient attacks like Ukulele (0.2) give very short duration buff stacks that are hard to maintain.
More attack speed means more crits per second, which keeps the buff at max stacks. This is the item's self-reinforcing loop. Crits give attack speed. Higher attack speed means more crits per second. More crits per second refreshes the buff more frequently. At 100% crit with reasonable attack speed, the three buff stacks are permanently maintained with constant timer refreshes.

Each item beyond the first adds +24% to the attack speed ceiling. Formula: 36% + (stacks - 1) x 24%. Crit chance is fixed at +5% regardless of how many you hold - invest in Glasses and Harvester's Scythe for more crit, not additional Predatory Instincts stacks.

Best Survivors

Huntress RoR2
Huntress S Tier
Already the fastest attacker. Predatory Instincts pushes her attack speed further into absurd territory at 100% crit. Arrow Rain hits multiple times simultaneously, applying multiple buff stacks per cast. Flurry of Arrows naturally crits every 3rd hit, consistently keeping the buff refreshed even below 100% crit.
Railgunner RoR2
Railgunner S Tier
Weakpoint shots always crit. Every weakpoint hit stacks the attack speed buff. Railgunner's M2 and M1 both crit on weakpoint, meaning every shot regardless of aim contributes to maintaining the buff. More attack speed means faster shot cycling, which means faster reloads and more weakpoint opportunities.
Bandit RoR2
Bandit A Tier
Backstab guarantees crits from behind. Every backstab attack instantly gives a buff stack. At 100% crit from Glasses plus backstab positioning, the buff stays at maximum permanently. Higher attack speed means Bandit's rapid-fire Burst primary deals more hits per second, compounding bleed and proc rates.
Mercenary RoR2
Mercenary A Tier
Eviscerate hits rapidly, each tick giving a chance to stack the buff at 100% crit. More attack speed on Mercenary means more Whirlwind and Eviscerate ticks per second. The melee-range nature of his kit ensures he is always in range to maintain the buff chain without downtime from missed shots.
Commando RoR2
Commando B Tier
Benefits from attack speed but Double Tap is Commando's primary and doesn't fire fast enough to keep buff stacks maxed without 100% crit. Suppressive Fire maintains the buff better with its multi-hit nature. Viable but not the strongest synergy since Commando's DPS relies more on proc chains than raw attack speed.

Key Synergies

Harvester's Scythe RoR2Shatterspleen RoR2Harvester's Scythe and Shatterspleen each give +5% crit alongside Predatory Instincts. All three items give +5% crit. Together they total +15% crit before any Glasses. With 9 Lens-Maker's Glasses adding another +90%, you hit 100% crit and the Predatory Instincts buff stays at maximum permanently for the entire encounter. The three items form the core of every dedicated crit build.
Laser Scope RoR2Laser Scope doubles crit damage, making every Predatory Instincts stack more impactful. More attack speed from Predatory Instincts means more crits per second. More crits per second means more Laser Scope doubled-damage hits per second. The two items multiply rather than just add - higher attack speed directly scales the DPS output of Laser Scope's crit damage bonus.
Plasma Shrimp RoR2Plasma Shrimp generates more missiles per second with higher attack speed. Plasma Shrimp fires one missile per hit. Predatory Instincts increases hits per second. More hits = more missiles. With Transcendence ensuring permanent shield, every Predatory Instincts stack directly multiplies Plasma Shrimp missile output. The attack speed and missile synergy compounds strongly on high-speed survivors.
57 Leaf Clover Risk of Rain 257 Leaf Clover improves crit roll reliability, keeping the buff active more consistently. At sub-100% crit, Clover re-rolls failed crit attempts for a favorable outcome. Higher effective crit chance means the Predatory Instincts buff stacks are maintained more consistently between 100% crit breakpoint builds. Particularly useful in the mid-run before reaching full Glasses stacks.
Purity RoR2Purity reduces crit chance and destroys Predatory Instincts value. Purity rolls random effects for an unfavorable outcome - meaning crits become rarer with Purity active. Predatory Instincts requires frequent crits to maintain the buff. Fewer crits = fewer buff refreshes = buff expires constantly = near-zero attack speed benefit. Do not combine these two items.

How to Unlock - Rapidfire Challenge

Reach +200% attack speed at any point during a run
1
Spinel Tonic gives a large burst of attack speed on activation. Stack with other speed sources for a one-time spike that triggers the challenge. The easiest route if you find one early.
2
War Horn gives +70% attack speed for 8 seconds on equipment activation. With Gesture of the Drowned auto-firing it, the buff is consistent. Combine with Soldier's Syringes for the base.
3
Soldier's Syringe alone requires 14 stacks (+15% each = +210%). Use Artifact of Command to select them and loop until you have enough.
4
Berserker's Pauldron gives +50% attack speed on kill for 3 seconds. In dense packs this fires constantly. Stack with Syringes for easier threshold.
The +200% threshold is checked against your total attack speed increase, not base. A survivor with 100% base attack speed who gains +200% meets the requirement. The challenge completes the moment the threshold is crossed - even briefly during a War Horn buff.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does Predatory Instincts do in Risk of Rain 2?

Predatory Instincts is a green uncommon item. The first stack gives an undocumented +5% crit chance. Every critical hit applies a buff stack of +12% attack speed lasting 3 seconds. With one item, up to 3 buff stacks can be held simultaneously (36% max attack speed). Each additional Predatory Instincts raises the buff stack cap by 2 (+24% more max attack speed) but does not add more crit chance.

Does Predatory Instincts stack?

Yes. Each additional stack raises the maximum number of attack speed buff stacks by 2. At 1 item you cap at 3 buff stacks (36%). At 2 items you cap at 5 (60%). At 3 items you cap at 7 (84%). However, additional items do not increase crit chance beyond the first item's +5%, so more items are only worthwhile if you are actively maintaining full buff stacks and want higher attack speed ceiling.

Why is my Predatory Instincts buff dropping?

The buff duration is multiplied by the proc coefficient of the attacking skill. An attack with 0.5 proc coefficient gives a 1.5-second buff window instead of 3 seconds. If you are not critting frequently enough to refresh before expiry, the buff drops. The fix is either higher crit chance (more Glasses, reach 100% crit) or switch to higher proc coefficient attacks to get longer buff windows per crit.

Does Predatory Instincts give crit chance when stacked?

No. Only the first Predatory Instincts grants the +5% crit chance bonus. Additional stacks add attack speed cap only. The crit chance from this item is not shown in the in-game description but is confirmed by the wiki and community testing.

How do you unlock Predatory Instincts?

Complete the Rapidfire challenge by reaching +200% attack speed at any point during a run. The easiest methods are using Spinel Tonic combined with other speed items, or stacking 14 Soldier's Syringes with Artifact of Command. War Horn with Gesture of the Drowned provides consistent speed bursts that can push over the threshold. The challenge completes the moment you hit 200% even if the buff expires shortly after.
