Hollow Knight Steel Soul Mode

The Knight's Shade, tied to death in Hollow Knight
Game Mode / Hollow Knight (2017)

One death and the whole save is gone. Steel Soul turns Hallownest into a single-life run.

Death: PermanentUnlock: Beat the gameReward: 2 achievements

Steel Soul is Hollow Knight's permadeath mode, and it means exactly that. Per the wiki, the Knight does not respawn; once you die, the game ends and the save profile is reset.

There is no Shade to chase, no Geo to recover, and no second chance. The mode strips out the safety net that makes the base game forgiving and asks you to clear Hallownest in a single life.

It is not as brutal as it sounds, because a few specific deaths do not count. Knowing which rooms are safe and which are fatal is the difference between a finished run and a deleted one.

This guide covers how to unlock Steel Soul, what counts as a real death, what changes in the world, and how to prep for the two achievements it carries.

  • What Shade icon Permadeath mode; one death resets the save.
  • Unlock The Knight icon Beat the game once, or use the Extras-page code.
  • Safe deaths Godhome icon Dream bosses and Godhome do not end the run.
  • Reward Achievement icon Steel Soul and Steel Heart achievements.

What Steel Soul Is

Steel Soul is a separate save mode with one rule: death is final. Per the wiki, the Knight does not respawn upon death, the game ends, and the save profile is reset to nothing.

That removes the entire Shade icon Shade system. In the normal game a death just drops your Geo and Soul cap until you reclaim it. In Steel Soul there is no Shade and no recovery, so every hit that empties your masks ends the whole playthrough.

The wiki notes a failed run shows the word "DEFEATED" on the save slot instead of a location, and trying to load it just prompts you to clear the profile. It is a clean, unforgiving reset.

How to Unlock It

Steel Soul is locked until you prove you can finish the game normally, with one shortcut for players who already have. There are two routes in.

Per the wiki, the standard unlock is finishing the game for the first time on any save. After that, a fresh Steel Soul slot becomes available. Alternatively, you can input up, down, up, down, left, right, left, right on the Extras page to unlock it directly.

Either way it is its own save file, so it never overwrites a normal run. Most players reach for it after a full clear, since the mode rewards route knowledge more than reflexes.

Survival Tip

Do not attempt Steel Soul as your first run. In actual play, route and boss familiarity matters far more than raw skill, so finish a normal save first and learn where the danger spikes.

Which Deaths Count

Not every death ends a Steel Soul run, and this is the most important thing to learn. Per the wiki, some of the hardest optional content is actually safe to attempt.

SituationDoes it end the run?
Godhome icon Dying to a Dream BossNo, safe
Godhome icon Dying in Godhome contentNo, safe
White Palace icon Dying in the White PalaceYes, Game Over
Radiance icon Dying to the RadianceYes, Game Over
Lifeblood icon Dying in the Lifeblood Core roomYes, Game Over

The takeaway is that you can grind dream bosses and the Pantheons without risk, but the White Palace platforming and the final Radiance fight are live. Treat those two as the real danger zones.

What Changes in the World

Permadeath ripples out into a few systems and NPCs. The changes are small but worth knowing before you commit.

Because death never breaks them, the Fragile Charm icon Fragile charms sold by Leg Eater icon Leg Eater become far better value, since their only penalty is shattering on death. The wiki specifies that penalty is nullified in Steel Soul.

The Shade economy also changes the NPCs. Per the wiki, Confessor Jiji is replaced by Steel Soul Jinn, who trades Rancid Egg icon Rancid Eggs for Geo, and Tuk has been killed by the Infection, leaving a single egg by the corpse.

How to Survive a Run

Steel Soul rewards caution and preparation over speed. The whole mindset shift is to play the percentages, not the highlight reel.

Over-level before anything risky. Carry extra masks, a maxed Nail, and a defensive Charm icon charm setup, and bank optional damage checks like Dream Boss icon dream bosses for practice since they cost you nothing.

Save the genuinely fatal content for when your build is complete. Heal whenever you have a safe window, never gamble on a tight dodge, and step away from the run when you are tired. Most Steel Soul losses are careless deaths, not skill walls.

The Achievements

Steel Soul carries two achievements, and the second is one of the hardest in the game. Both require finishing in the mode without a fatal death.

AchievementRequirement
Steel Soul icon Steel SoulFinish the game in Steel Soul mode (50G)
Steel Heart icon Steel HeartReach 100% completion in Steel Soul mode (50G)

Steel Soul just needs an ending, so a careful direct run clears it. Steel Heart is the marathon: a full 100% with no fatal death, which is why our achievements guide ranks it among the toughest in Hallownest.

Common Mistakes

  1. Starting it blind. Steel Soul rewards route knowledge. Finish a normal save first so nothing surprises you.
  2. Fearing dream bosses. They are free practice; dying to one does not end the run. Use them to warm up.
  3. Rushing the White Palace. Its platforming is live and lethal. Take it slow and only when you must.
  4. Skipping Fragile charms. Their break-on-death penalty is nullified here, so they are pure value.
  5. Playing tired. Most losses are careless, not skill walls. Stop the run before fatigue costs the save.
