Teacher’s Archives Hollow Knight Guide

Teachers Archives icon, the acid-lake research building at the centre of Fog Canyon in Hollow Knight
Sub-area / Hollow Knight (Patch v1.4.3)

Monomon’s acid-lake research building at the centre of Fog Canyon. Houses Monomon the Dreamer, the Uumuu boss, Quirrel’s bench monologue, Charged Lumafly tanks, plus the King-Light lore tablets.

Dreamer: MonomonBoss: UumuuNPC: Quirrel

Teacher’s Archives is the building atop the acid lake at the centre of Fog Canyon. Per the wiki, Monomon "stored all her research and the kingdom’s knowledge" inside its chambers; the building doubles as her Dreamer chamber and as the source of the Fog Canyon enemy roster.

The buried lede is where the canyon’s jellyfish came from. According to the wiki, "the archives also contain a tank full of Charged Lumaflies, presumably there in order to study them. Monomon is hinted to have sourced the creatures resembling jellyfish found in Fog Canyon, if not only by accident." Every Ooma, Uoma, and Uumuu is downstream of her research.

The wiki specifies Monomon "became a Dreamer to seal the entrance to the Black Egg in the Temple of the Black Egg, which put her into an eternal sleep." Quirrel was her apprentice; she entrusted him with her mask and "called Quirrel back to Hallownest to undo this protection after the Hollow Knight weakened."

This guide covers the four routes into the Archives, the Uumuu boss fight with Quirrel’s shield-break intervention, the Monomon Dream Nail seal-break beat, Quirrel’s longest in-game monologue at the entry bench, the Charged Lumafly tank as the origin of the canyon’s gelatinous creatures, the KINGLIGHT and OLDLIGHT lore tablets, and the mask-as-protection apprentice arc.

  • What it is Teachers Archives icon Monomon’s research building atop the acid lake in Fog Canyon.
  • Boss Uumuu icon Uumuu guards Monomon’s chamber; Quirrel breaks the shield.
  • Dreamer Monomon icon Monomon second seal on the Hollow Knight.
  • Skip when Shade Cloak icon Pre-Shade Cloak; the Fog Canyon Shade Gate stays sealed.

What the Teacher’s Archives Is

Per the wiki, the Teacher’s Archives was "the main feature of the area" of Fog Canyon. Cornifer describes it as "a large building just below here, out in the middle of a lake and a marvel to observe." Quirrel reduces it to "a building atop an acid lake."

According to the wiki, the building has three rendered zones: the entry chamber with the bench, the spell-study floors with lore tablets and the Lumafly tanks, and the inner Monomon chamber where Uumuu spawns. The acid pool outside the entry door doubles as the boss-arena pool where Uumuu emerges.

The wiki specifies the Archives "became a nest for the gelatinous creatures of the canyon" after Monomon entered her Dreamer sleep. Cornifer adds that he "tried to head in, but it’s become a nest for those slimey, see-through creatures" - flagging the Oomas and Uomas spawned inside the walls.

Access Routes

Fog Canyon icon Per the wiki, the Archives sits at the centre of Fog Canyon and is locked behind the canyon’s Shade Gate on a first visit. Four mobility items individually open the centre area and the Archives door.

  1. Shade Cloak via Abyss. According to the wiki, the Shade Gate blocking the centre area "requires the Shade Cloak to pass through it." Shade Cloak is the cleanest single-prereq path; it is also the standard route for the true-ending progression chain.
  2. Isma’s Tear via Crossroads. Per the wiki, the Forgotten Crossroads hidden passage opens with Isma’s Tear (acid swim). The route reaches the Archives without Shade Cloak, but Isma’s Tear is late-game and sits behind Dung Defender plus Monarch Wings.
  3. Crystal Heart Super Dash. The wiki notes the same Crossroads passage can be cleared "with a careful Super Dash" instead of Isma’s Tear. The dash window is tight; speedrunners use this route for Dreamer order manipulation.
  4. Mothwing Cloak plus Monarch Wings. According to the wiki, the third Crossroads route combines basic dash with the double jump. Easier mid-air control than the Super Dash variant; less precise than Isma’s Tear acid swim.
Build Tip

Bench at the Archives entry before fighting Uumuu. According to the wiki, the chamber inside the front door has a bench that doubles as the Quirrel monologue trigger. Skipping the bench rest pre-fight leaves the Knight with the Crossroads spawn point on death, which forces a full Fog Canyon re-traversal.

Uumuu Boss Fight

Uumuu icon Per the wiki, Uumuu is the "intelligent being that guards the inner chamber of the Teacher’s Archives." Uumuu is a jellyfish-like Infected being similar to the Oomas and Uomas in Fog Canyon, but larger and with a gelatinous shield that blocks the Knight’s nail entirely.

According to the wiki, the fight begins when Uumuu "appears from the acid pool in the room preceding the inner chamber once the Knight reaches it." Quirrel "intervenes to strike Uumuu with his nail and break its gelatinous defence, exposing its core." His intervention is scripted; the Knight cannot finish the fight without it.

The wiki specifies the in-fight tactic: detonate the explosive Oomas Uumuu summons so the explosion lands on Uumuu itself. Each detonation deals 100 damage and opens a nail window. Once defeated, "the Infection bursts out of Uumuu before it explodes."

Monomon the Dreamer

Monomon icon Per the wiki, Monomon "used to be a chief researcher and teacher of Hallownest." She is one of the three Dreamers who maintain the seal on the Hollow Knight; the other two are Lurien in Watcher’s Spire and Herrah in Distant Village.

According to the wiki, the Resting Grounds lore tablet reads "In her Archive, surrounded by fog and mist." When the Infection appeared, Monomon "took part in the Pale King’s plan to seal the Radiance away in the Hollow Knight" and became a Dreamer to seal the Temple of the Black Egg entrance.

Dream Nail icon The wiki specifies Dream Nailing her sleeping form after Uumuu breaks her seal. The basic Dream Nail works (Awoken Dream Nail not required). Her Dream Nail cinematic is the second of three in the Dreamer seal chain required for the standard ending.

Quirrel’s Bench Monologue

Quirrel icon Per the wiki, Quirrel was "Monomon’s apprentice or assistant." She "entrusted him with her mask which serves as additional protection for her once she became a Dreamer." He carried it out of Hallownest and returned when she called him back.

According to the wiki, the Archives entry chamber bench triggers Quirrel’s longest monologue in the game. He reflects on the returning memory and the strange feeling: "despite the sight, I can’t help but feel... familiarity?" The scene is one of two extended quiet beats in the game.

The wiki notes his post-Uumuu arc continues at Blue Lake (next spawn point) and closes at the Resting Grounds cliff. Players who skip the Archives bench lose the trigger for the Blue Lake spawn entirely; the Resting Grounds cliff scene is mutually exclusive with that miss.

Build Tip

Talk to Quirrel outside the Archives door BEFORE entering. Per the wiki, his pre-fight dialogue is mostly nostalgic curiosity about the building; in actual play, players who walk straight in miss it and never get a second chance once the Uumuu fight cinematic begins.

Charged Lumafly Tank

Charged Lumafly icon Per the wiki, the Archives "contain a tank full of Charged Lumaflies, presumably there in order to study them." The tank is rendered in the upper study chambers; the Lumaflies inside flicker the same way as the Charged Lumaflies patrolling Fog Canyon.

According to the wiki, "Monomon is hinted to have sourced the creatures resembling jellyfish found in Fog Canyon, if not only by accident." The implication: every Ooma, Uoma, and Uumuu descends from her research subjects. Uumuu is the named specimen that grew enough intelligence to guard the inner chamber.

The wiki specifies the Dream Nail reading on the gelatinous creatures returns Monomon’s name: "...Monomon..." from the Uomas and "...MONOMON..." from the Oomas. Their cognition has been compromised by the Infection but their species memory of her remains.

Lore Tablets and KINGLIGHT

Per the wiki, the Archives "contain strange, jumbled Lore Tablets" with capitalised fragments rather than full sentences. The tablets are the closest the game comes to a Rosetta Stone for the true-ending progression.

Pale King icon According to the wiki, the tablets cluster around three sets of paired terms: "KINGLIGHT" and "OLDLIGHT," "which are probably the Pale King and the Radiance." The pairing is the cleanest piece of evidence that the two Higher Beings are narrative opposites rather than allies.

Radiance icon The wiki specifies two more pairs: "VESSEL" and "VOID, which are the Vessels and the Void," and "SEAL, EGG, and DREAMER, which seem to explain how the Radiance is sealed." The Dreamers (Monomon included) maintain the SEAL on the EGG that houses the VESSEL containing the Radiance.

Common Mistakes

  1. Skipping Quirrel outside the door. Per the wiki, the pre-fight dialogue is one of the cleanest character beats in the game. Players who walk straight in miss it entirely; the Uumuu cinematic overrides his standing position permanently.
  2. Trying to slash Uumuu’s shield. According to the wiki, the gelatinous shield blocks every nail hit. The fight requires Ooma detonations to expose the core; nail-only attempts stall out and burn through Lifeblood Masks with no progress.
  3. Resting at the Crossroads pre-Archives. The wiki specifies the Archives entry bench saves the Knight inside the building. Players who rest at a Crossroads or City of Tears bench instead lose 10-15 minutes of re-traversal on Uumuu deaths.
  4. Missing the lore tablets. Per the wiki, the KINGLIGHT, OLDLIGHT, VESSEL, and SEAL tablets are some of the clearest true-ending evidence in the game. Players who focus only on the Uumuu fight walk past them and miss the connection to Kingsoul charm context.
  5. Forgetting to Dream Nail the gelatinous enemies. According to the wiki, Ooma and Uoma Dream Nail readings return Monomon’s name. The reading is the cleanest in-fight confirmation that the canyon creatures originated from her research; players who skip Dream Nail attempts miss the tie.
