The Whip's evolution path. Level it to 8 with Hollow Heart in inventory, and it becomes Bloody Tear with lifesteal.
The Whip evolves into Bloody Tear at level 8 with a max-level Hollow Heart passive. Bloody Tear adds lifesteal on top of the Whip's horizontal slash, which makes the evolution one of the easier full-run sustain tools in the base game.
The 1.35-second cooldown is the gameplay hook most guides miss. According to the wiki, the Whip's pre-evolution cooldown is the fastest of any base game starting weapon, which means even a half-built Whip is already cycling damage faster than every comparable slot at minute 10.
The build context is the Antonio Belpaese starter loop. Antonio starts with the Whip, and the wiki specifies that the Whip can also roll from Coat of Arms as a vampire-killing tool on non-Antonio runs. Ode to Castlevania adds eight new whip variants with their own evolution gates.
This guide covers the base Whip into Bloody Tear evolution gate, the Antonio Belpaese build that maximizes the 1.35-second cycle, the lifesteal math on Bloody Tear, and a quick reference for all of the OTC DLC whip evolutions including Alchemy Whip into Vampire Killer.
Whip, a base game Normal-type weapon. Attacks horizontally on a 1.35-second cycle. Antonio Belpaese's starting weapon.
Bloody Tear at level 8 with a max-level
Hollow Heart passive in inventory.
Spinach for Might,
Empty Tome for cooldown, plus
Duplicator for Amount. The Whip creates a horizontal slash that originates from Antonio's torso and pierces every enemy in the slash arc. The wiki specifies that the slash ignores Speed and Duration, which means Bracer and Spellbinder both do nothing for the weapon's output regardless of level.
The 1.35-second base cooldown is the unique stat. According to the wiki, no other base game starting weapon cycles this fast. With Empty Tome stacked, the cycle drops into the 0.8-second range, which means the Whip is effectively a continuous slash across the front of the character.
At max level, the Whip has +30 base damage (40 total), +20% area, and +1 amount (2 slashes per cycle). The 20% crit chance with 2x crit multiplier rounds out the profile. In actual play, the second slash at level 8 alternates left and right, covering both sides of Antonio at once.
Take Hollow Heart on the first level-up screen it shows. The evolution gate is the only one in the base game that pairs the Whip with a Max Health passive, and waiting past level 4 usually means the gate slips past minute 14 as supporting weapons compete for chest rolls.

The Whip is the oldest weapon in the game by release date, and the wiki notes that its 100% rarity flag means it appears on roughly every chest roll a non-magic character takes. In real runs, this makes the Whip one of the few weapons you can count on showing up early enough to evolve before minute 12.
The Whip evolves into Bloody Tear at level 8 with a max-level Hollow Heart in inventory. Bloody Tear adds lifesteal: each hit returns a small fraction of the damage dealt as health, which the wiki specifies is the only base game weapon with a built-in lifesteal mechanic.
That makes Bloody Tear the run-saver weapon when survival becomes the bottleneck. On Inverse Mode and longer runs, the Bloody Tear lifesteal alone can carry Antonio through the 25-minute boss wave without dedicated Recovery passives. Across multiple runs, this is the single biggest reason to prioritize the evolution.
| Base | Passive needed | Becomes |
|---|---|---|
| Whip (Level 8) | Hollow Heart (max) | Bloody Tear |
If you are running Antonio and the run goes past 20 minutes, take Hollow Heart over any other Max Health passive you might be offered. Bloody Tear lifesteal compensates for everything Hollow Heart fails to give you on its own, plus the evolution unlock.
Antonio runs lean on Might because his starting growth is Damage-focused. The six-passive build prioritizes Hollow Heart for the evolution gate, then Spinach and Empty Tome for the standard damage-plus-cooldown core, then defensive picks to keep Antonio in slash range.
Antonio Belpaese (starts with Whip; +10% Might per 10 levels makes him the default carry)
Hollow Heart (evolution gate plus Max Health for pre-Bloody-Tear survival)
Spinach (Might scales the +30 base damage gains across levels 2 through 8)
Empty Tome (cooldown reduction tightens the 1.35-second cycle into a near-continuous slash)
Duplicator (Amount adds extra slashes per cycle past the level-8 cap of 2)
Candelabrador (Area widens the slash arc, catching enemies on both sides at level 8)In our testing, this build is online by minute 8 when Hollow Heart arrives on the first two level-up screens. Past minute 14, the Bloody Tear lifesteal lets Antonio fight aggressively into dense enemy waves rather than kiting away from them.
Ode to Castlevania added eight magic-type whip variants on top of the base Whip, each with its own evolution gate. According to the wiki, evolving all eight is the unlock condition for the Familiar Forge weapon and one of the deeper achievement chains in the DLC.
| Whip | Evolves with | Becomes |

| Whip (base) | Hollow Heart | Bloody Tear |

The wiki notes that each OTC whip is a magic-type weapon, which means they can all roll from Spectral Sword in addition to their starting characters. The Vibhuti Whip evolution unlocks Maxim Kischine, so prioritize that one on runs where the Maxim unlock is the goal. For deeper coverage of Dragon Water Whip and the other tip-style evolutions, see the linked spoke pages.
The Whip benefits from a wide passive list per the wiki effects block. Spinach, Hollow Heart, Empty Tome, Candelabrador, Bracer, Spellbinder, Duplicator, and Pummarola are all flagged. Wings and Attractorb are flagged on the secondary stat row. The only Red X passives are Stone Mask, Skull O'Maniac, and the magic-type passives like Karoma's Mana.
Among arcanas, Slash (XVI) is the standout pick. The wiki specifies that Slash boosts crit chance, which directly multiplies with the Whip's built-in 20% crit chance and 2x crit multiplier. In actual play, this arcana plus a single Clover pick turns roughly half of every slash into a crit fan.
Sapphire Mist (I) is the alternative arcana when the run already has high Luck. According to the wiki, Sapphire Mist grants extra activation chance affected by Luck, which stacks with the Whip's already-fast cycle. Across multiple runs, Slash (XVI) tends to outperform unless Luck is already past 200%.
The Whip is the launch-day starting weapon for Antonio Belpaese, released on 27 October 2021. The wiki notes that the Bloody Tear name and lifesteal mechanic are direct references to the Vampire Killer whip from Castlevania, where the Bloody Tear sub-weapon variant first appeared in Castlevania: Bloodlines and Symphony of the Night.
The Ode to Castlevania DLC added eight new magic-type whips that all draw from the same Castlevania source material. Per the wiki, the OTC weapon names trace back to specific Castlevania titles: Alchemy Whip from Castlevania III, Vibhuti Whip from later Sorrow-series entries. The Whip line is the most-expanded weapon family in the game by count.
