There is no cheat menu and no console. What people call cheats are PC mods and a handful of legit in-game tricks.
Hollow Knight has no cheat codes, no console, and no built-in cheat menu. Searching for a password to type is going to come up empty, because the game simply does not ship with one.
What players actually mean by cheats falls into two buckets: PC mods that change the game directly, and legitimate in-game tricks that trivialize farming or hard content without any external tools.
On PC, the modding community provides everything from a debug overlay to texture swaps. Per the wiki, those mods can only be installed legally on the PC release, so console and Switch players are limited to the in-game tricks.
This guide covers the honest picture: why there are no codes, what the PC mods actually do, the exploits that feel like cheating, and the risks to your save and achievements.
None exist, there is no console or cheat menu.
Mods via the Modding API, installed with Lumafly or Scarab.
Legit tricks like Geo farms and the Dreamgate.
Mods can disable achievements, so back up your save.No. Hollow Knight has no cheat codes, no developer console, and no in-game cheat option on any platform. Team Cherry did not build one in, and no update has added one.
That means there is nothing to type, no button combination, and no menu toggle for invincibility, infinite Geo, or unlocked abilities. Any site promising a code list for the base game is recycling misinformation.
The closest thing to cheating is on PC, where the community modding scene can change almost anything. Everywhere else, the options are the in-game tricks covered below.
Avoid downloading "trainers" or code apps from random sites. The legitimate PC route is the open-source Modding API and its official installers, not a paid cheat tool.
On PC, mods are the real answer to cheating, and they are mature and well supported. Per the wiki, mods can only be legally installed on the PC release of the game.
The backbone is the
Hollow Knight Modding API, the dependency most mods build on. The wiki lists two main installers, Lumafly and Scarab, that handle setup so you do not edit game files by hand.
The community Debug Mod is the one that behaves like a cheat menu. It adds an overlay with toggles for invincibility, infinite Soul, instant level loading, and free movement, which in actual play is how most players test routes or skip grinds. It is a separate community mod, not an official feature.
| Tool | What it does |
|---|---|
| Modding API | Core dependency that lets mods run |
| Lumafly / Scarab | Installers that manage mods for you |
| Debug Mod | Overlay with invincibility, Soul, and warp toggles |
You do not need mods to break the game open. Several legitimate systems and exploits trivialize the parts players most want to skip, and they work on every platform.
For money, lean on a
Geo farm route to fund every upgrade fast. For travel, the
Dreamgate lets you set a portal and warp back to it, which the wiki describes as travelling instantly through dream.
For combat, the right charms do the heavy lifting. Pairing
Quick Slash with a strength charm shreds bosses, and
Dashmaster plus
Grimmchild turns fights into a mobile damage loop. Our charm combos guide ranks the strongest setups.
Console and Switch players cannot use mods, so the in-game tricks are the whole toolkit. The wiki is explicit that mods are PC-only and legal only on that release.
That is not as limiting as it sounds. The
Geo farms, the Dreamgate, charm combos, and pogo-bouncing on spikes and enemies all work identically on console. None of them risk your save or your achievements.
If your goal is just to lower the difficulty, the strongest move is build optimization, not cheating. A maxed
Nail with the right charms makes most fights far more forgiving.
Mods are safe when handled properly, but there are real downsides to know before you install anything. The two big ones are achievements and saves.
Some setups disable achievement unlocks while active, so a modded run may not count toward Steam or Xbox progress. Back up your save file before installing, since a bad mod or a mid-update can corrupt a profile.
Be extra careful in
Steel Soul mode. It uses permadeath, so any mod instability or exploit gone wrong can end the whole run with no recovery.
If you want an edge without mods, these guides cover the legit tricks and builds that do the most work.
