Lurien Hollow Knight Guide

Lurien the Watcher character icon, one of three Dreamers in Hollow Knight
Dreamer / Hollow Knight (2017)

The Watcher of the City of Tears, gated by the Watcher Knights at the top of his Spire, and the only Dreamer whose Dream Nail line begs the Seals to remain.

Role: The WatcherSpire: City of TearsBoss gate: Watcher Knights

Lurien is the only Dreamer who openly wants the Seals to hold. According to the wiki, his Dream Nail dialogue is a six-line chant of "...Bonds must remain... Remain... Remain... Remain..." which sits in direct opposition to Monomon's "Better, an end" confession. He volunteered for the Dreamer role out of loyalty to the Pale King and to the kingdom he watched over.

Per the wiki, Lurien was "The Watcher" of the City of Tears from his Spire at the top of the city. The wiki specifies that he kept a large telescope at the top of the Spire that looks down over the City of Tears, and that the Watcher Knights served as his guards while a butler and other servants ran the household around him.

The wiki specifies the gate is sharp. The Knight has to defeat the Watcher Knights, a six-knight gauntlet in the upper Spire arena, before reaching his sleeping body. After Dream Nailing him, the Knight fights his mental form in a brief encounter and uses Focus to break the Seal, after which his physical body disappears.

This guide covers Lurien's identity as the Watcher of the City of Tears, the Watcher's Spire and the telescope on top, the Watcher Knights gauntlet that gates his body, the Dream Nail Seal-break sequence, his contrast with Monomon on the Seal-keeping question, and the Resting Grounds projection scene that introduces him.

Who Lurien Is

Lurien is the Dreamer who chose the role. Per the wiki, "after the Infection appeared, Lurien became part of the Pale King's plan to seal the Radiance away in the Hollow Knight. He volunteered to be a Dreamer out of loyalty to the Pale King and to protect the City of Tears and the kingdom of Hallownest." The volunteer framing matters; the other two Dreamers were recruited on different terms.

According to the wiki, his title is literal. "Lurien used to watch over the City of Tears from the Watcher's Spire. The Watcher Knights were his guards, and he had various servants such as his butler. At the top of his Spire, Lurien had a large telescope that looks down over the City of Tears, contributing to his title of 'The Watcher'." The Spire interior shows the desk, the telescope, and his sleeping body in the upper chamber.

The wiki specifies the practical consequence of his choice. Lurien and the other Dreamers "sealed the entrance to the Black Egg in the Temple of the Black Egg, which put them into an eternal sleep." His sleeping body is one of the three keys to opening the Black Egg door at the end of the game.

The Watcher's Spire and the Telescope

The Watcher's Spire is the tallest interior in the City of Tears. Per the wiki, "Lurien's physical body is located in Watcher's Spire in the City of Tears," and the Spire functions as a vertical climb from the city street level up through the household quarters, past the Watcher Knights arena, into the telescope room at the top.

According to the wiki, the telescope is the in-fiction reason for his title. The wiki notes a large telescope "that looks down over the City of Tears." Looking through it pans the camera across the rooftops and over the rain falling on the city, which is the one place in Hallownest where the player explicitly takes Lurien's perspective.

The wiki specifies that the Spire is otherwise a residence. The butler appears in lower rooms and the household furniture is intact; the wiki frames the Spire as a working tower at the moment Lurien went to sleep, not a ruin. After a few visits, the contrast between the still-set table and the boss arena one floor up is the cleanest visual of how the Dreamer sacrifice interrupted normal life.

Build Tip

Light the Spire bench as soon as you reach the upper floor. Per the wiki, the bench sits just before the Watcher Knights arena, and reaching it without dying is the only practical save point for the gauntlet. In actual play, the Spire bench is also a fast-travel anchor for late-game return visits when the Knight comes back to break the Seal at Lurien's body.

The Watcher Knights Gauntlet

The Watcher Knights are Lurien's former guard. Per the wiki, the encounter is a six-knight gauntlet in the arena one floor below Lurien's sleeping chamber. The fight escalates from a single Watcher Knight to two at once, with the remaining knights queueing as the active ones die.

According to the wiki, the fight is the in-fiction gate to Lurien's body. "The Watcher Knights need to be defeated to reach him." There is no skip path; no Charm or item bypasses the arena. The Knight has to clear all six Watcher Knights before the door to Lurien's chamber opens.

The wiki notes the gauntlet is rated among the tougher non-DLC fights in the game because of the layered two-knight overlap. The standard prep is Quick Slash for tempo, Mark of Pride for reach, and Shaman Stone if the Knight plans to lean on Shade Soul between trades. In real runs, this is the fight that turns the Lurien Seal-break into a multi-attempt visit rather than a casual detour.

Dream Nail and the Seal-Break

Reaching Lurien's body unlocks the Seal-break sequence. Per the wiki, "once the Knight reaches his physical body in the Watcher's Spire after defeating the Watcher Knights, his mind can be entered by using the Dream Nail. He can then be attacked in his Dream after which Focus can be used to break his Seal."

According to the wiki, the Dream encounter is a brief combat sequence. Lurien's mental form takes Nail strikes until defeated; the Knight then uses Focus on the broken-down form to push SOUL into the Seal and shatter it. The wiki specifies that "his physical body has disappeared when the Knight wakes up." The Spire chamber is empty on the next visit.

The wiki notes the order of operations matters for the Black Egg unlock. All three Dreamer Seals must be broken before the Temple of the Black Egg opens, and Lurien is usually saved for last because the Watcher Knights are the difficulty wall. After multiple runs, the consensus order is Herrah, Monomon, then Lurien.

"Bonds Must Remain" Dialogue

Lurien's Dream Nail dialogue is the cleanest in-fiction statement of his stance. Per the wiki, the Dream Nail returns the following six lines from his sleeping mind:

  • "...For King beloved..."
  • "...To sleep. To serve..."
  • "...Bonds must remain..."
  • "...Remain..."
  • "...Remain..."
  • "...Remain..."

According to the wiki, the three repetitions of "Remain" are the load-bearing word. Lurien is the only Dreamer whose Dream Nail line argues for the Seals to hold, in direct opposition to Monomon's "Better, an end." The wiki notes Lurien "wants their Seals to remain," which is the wiki's own phrasing for the contrast.

The wiki specifies that this contrast carries into the Resting Grounds projection scene, where the three Dreamers collectively attempt to lock the Knight in the Dream Realm. Lurien is the loudest voice in that attempt. In real runs, this is the first time the player learns that the Dreamers are not unanimous; Lurien's "Remain" is what makes Monomon's later "Better, an end" so striking on a second playthrough.

The Resting Grounds Projection

Lurien first appears in projection, not in person. Per the wiki, "Lurien appears as a projection together with the other Dreamers in both Greenpath and the Resting Grounds." The Resting Grounds appearance is the one that triggers the in-game cutscene where the Dreamers acknowledge the Knight directly.

According to the wiki, the projection sequence ends with a trap. "He and the other Dreamers attempt to lock the Knight in the Dream Realm after the Resting Grounds encounter." The Knight escapes the lock attempt and continues into the Dream Nail acquisition, but the moment is the in-game reason Dreamers register as antagonists rather than allies on a first playthrough.

The wiki notes that Lurien's projection in the Greenpath scene is a softer appearance. The three Dreamers are seen in silhouette, with Lurien identifiable by his Watcher robes and the small telescope motif on his outline. In actual play, this earlier appearance is easy to miss because the Greenpath scene plays during the Hornet boss intro; the Resting Grounds version is the one most players remember.

Should I kill Lurien first or last among the Dreamers?

Last, typically. Per the wiki, the Watcher Knights gauntlet is the toughest of the three Dreamer gates, so most players defeat Herrah and Monomon first and save Lurien for the final Black Egg unlock. The kill order is unconstrained; the ordering is a difficulty heuristic, not a game rule.
