A discarded Vessel of Void. Genderless, masked, born in the Abyss to the Pale King and the White Lady.
The Knight is the small horned figure in the navy cape who climbed out of the Abyss with Void in their shell. According to the wiki, they are a discarded Vessel, child of the Pale King and the White Lady, and the only one of their siblings whose mask did not crack from the Infection.
Most players confuse The Knight with the Hollow Knight. Per the wiki, they are different characters. The Knight is the playable protagonist. The Hollow Knight is the older sibling sealed inside the Temple of the Black Egg, the boss the Knight is sent to face. Hornet is their half-sibling through the Pale King, which is why she calls them tiny ghost in Greenpath.
The starting kit is bare. Old Nail, 5 Masks of health, 33 SOUL, the Focus heal. The wiki specifies that progression turns the Knight from that minimum into a Lord of Shades through four Nail upgrades, six abilities, six spells, and a charm system that runs on notches.
This guide covers The Knight's lore as a Vessel, the full Nail upgrade path to the Pure Nail at 21 damage, every spell and traversal ability, the four endings, and the charm builds that work across the run.
The Knight, a discarded Vessel of Void. Child of the Pale King and the White Lady, half-sibling to Hornet.
Old Nail (5 damage), 5 Masks of HP, 33 SOUL, the Focus heal. Genderless per Team Cherry.
Pure Nail at 21 damage, forged by the Nailsmith for 7,050 Geo and 6 Pale Ore.The Knight is the playable Vessel of Hollow Knight. According to the wiki, the name is a placeholder Team Cherry uses to talk about the character outside the game. Inside the game itself, no NPC says The Knight; instead they use aliases like Ghost, little ghost, tiny shadow, vessel, or sibling, depending on who is speaking.
Per the wiki, the Knight is genderless. Team Cherry confirmed this in a Reddit AMA. Vessels are made of Void poured into a shell shaped from the Pale King's will, and the character has no biological sex in the typical sense. NPCs use it or they pronouns when context requires; the wiki defaults to they.
The Knight starts in Dirtmouth, the tiny dust-bowl town above the ruined kingdom of Hallownest. Drawn back by a calling, the Knight descends through the Forgotten Crossroads and works through the Mantis Village, Greenpath, the City of Tears, Deepnest, the Royal Waterways, and the Crystal Peak. The plot question is whether to free, seal, or replace their sibling, the Hollow Knight.
The Knight starts thin and ends loaded. The wiki effects block specifies the baseline at 5 Masks of HP, 33 SOUL, 5 Nail damage, and one Focus heal per 33 SOUL. Across the playthrough, every stat grows through pickups.
| Stat | Start | Cap | How to grow |
|---|---|---|---|
| Masks (HP) | 5 | 9 | 16 Mask Shards (4 per Mask) |
| SOUL Vessels | 3 (33 SOUL) | 9 (99 SOUL) | 9 Vessel Fragments (3 per Vessel) |
| Nail damage | 5 | 21 | 4 Nailsmith upgrades |
| Focus speed | 1.0x | 1.43x | Quick Focus charm |
| Charm notches | 3 | 11 | 4 Charm Notches + 4 Salubra notches |
| Aliases | Ghost, little ghost, Nailmaster, Lord of Shades | Per NPC dialogue | |
| Gender | None (per Team Cherry AMA) | They / it pronouns | |
In practice, the early run is constrained by SOUL. Per the wiki, Focus consumes 33 SOUL per heal and the meter only holds 99 at maximum, so a fully fed Vessel can pop three heals back-to-back, no more. Soul Catcher and Soul Eater charms raise SOUL gain per Nail hit, which feeds both healing and spells on the same meter.
The Nail upgrade ladder is the Knight's only direct damage scaling. According to the wiki, the Nailsmith in the City of Tears forges four upgrades, two of which require Pale Ore on top of Geo. The full path costs 7,050 Geo and 6 Pale Ore.
| Tier | Name | Damage | Cost |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Old Nail | 5 | Starter |
| 2 | Sharpened Nail | 9 | 250 Geo |
| 3 | Channelled Nail | 13 | 800 Geo + 1 Pale Ore |
| 4 | Coiled Nail | 17 | 2,000 Geo + 2 Pale Ore |
| 5 | Pure Nail | 21 | 4,000 Geo + 3 Pale Ore |
The visible Geo cost is roughly half the real cost. Per the wiki, six Pale Ore are scattered across Crystal Peak, Ancient Basin, the Seer rewards, the Grubfather, the Colosseum of Fools, and the Nosk fight. In actual play, most runs stall at Channelled or Coiled Nail because the player has Geo but no Ore in hand. Plan the Pale Ore route before saving up the 4,000 Geo for Pure Nail.
The Knight has three spell lines, each with a base form and an upgraded form. Per the wiki, every spell costs 33 SOUL to cast, the same as one Focus heal. Soul Catcher and Soul Eater charms raise SOUL gain per Nail hit, and Spell Twister cuts the cost to 24 per cast.
| Line | Base form | Upgraded form | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Forward | Vengeful Spirit | Shade Soul | Snail Shaman in the Howling Cliffs; Soul Sanctum |
| Downward | Desolate Dive | Descending Dark | Soul Sanctum boss room; Crystal Peak relic |
| Upward | Howling Wraiths | Abyss Shriek | Queen's Station altar; the Abyss after Void Heart |
The wiki specifies that Desolate Dive and Descending Dark grant invincibility frames during the cast itself, which makes them panic buttons against bosses with telegraphed area attacks. Across multiple runs, Vengeful Spirit is the spell most players keep on the bind because its forward range carves through standard enemies without melee risk.
Six abilities open the map. Each one gates a region. Per the wiki, the unlock order is fixed by which boss drops each ability, so most runs hit them in the same sequence even on open-world routes.
| Ability | Effect | Source |
|---|---|---|
Mothwing Cloak | Forward dash | Hornet Protector in Greenpath |
Mantis Claw | Wall cling and wall jump | Mantis Village (no boss gate) |
Crystal Heart | Super dash through gaps | Crystal Peak resting room |
Monarch Wings | Double jump | Broken Vessel boss in the Ancient Basin |
| Shade Cloak | Dash through enemies, damage on contact | The Abyss (after Mothwing Cloak) |
| Isma's Tear | Acid swim | Royal Waterways (Isma's Grove) |
The
Dream Nail sits outside the traversal six. According to the wiki, it harvests Essence from fallen enemies and unlocks the Awoken Dream Nail through the Seer's rewards. It also gives access to the Warrior Dreams, the Dream Bosses (Soul Tyrant, Lost Kin, White Defender, Failed Champion, Nightmare King Grimm), and the Awoken sequences with Hornet and the Hollow Knight.
The charm system runs on notches. The Knight starts with 3 and grows to 11 through 4 Charm Notch pickups and 4 Salubra notches. The 11-notch budget covers most builds. Per the wiki, the standard general-purpose loadout for a first playthrough leans on damage uptime and a small survivability buffer.
Soul Catcher (2 notches; more SOUL per hit)Total: 11 notches. The wiki notes this loadout fits Salubra's full sticker set and clears 80 percent of the bosses without a swap. For Pantheons and Radiance attempts, swap Soul Catcher for Soul Eater and add Spell Twister via an Overcharm to push spell density even higher.
The Knight is one of countless Vessels poured into shells by the Pale King's plan. Per the wiki, the Pale King and the White Lady bred Vessels in the Abyss to find a being pure enough to seal the Radiance. The Hollow Knight was selected. The rest, including The Knight, were left behind in the dark.
The wiki states that the Knight climbed out of the Abyss as a survivor, witnessed the Hollow Knight being taken away, and was sealed below when the Birthplace was closed. The Knight's return to Hallownest at the start of the game is the answer to a calling, the same calling that wakes the Infection in the Hollow Knight's shell.
Across the run, NPCs piece this together. The White Lady acknowledges the Knight as her child by referring to a discarded vessel. The Pale King's lore tablets in the White Palace name them Born of God and Void. Hornet calls them tiny ghost twice, then by the Kingdom's Edge fight uses sibling. After the Void Heart pickup, the Knight commands every shade in the Abyss and the title Lord of Shades unlocks in the menu.
Hollow Knight has four canonical endings tied to The Knight's choices. Per the wiki, they branch on whether the Knight collects the Void Heart, whether Hornet joins for the final fight, and whether the player has cleared the Pantheon of Hallownest.
| Ending | Requirement | Outcome |
|---|---|---|
| The Hollow Knight | Beat the Hollow Knight without Void Heart | The Knight replaces the older sibling as the seal |
| Sealed Siblings | Void Heart + Hornet present at the Black Egg | Hornet and the Knight share the seal |
| Dream No More | Void Heart + Dream Nail the Hollow Knight | The Radiance dies; the Infection ends |
| Embrace the Void | Clear Pantheon of Hallownest in Godhome | Void consumes the Radiance and Godseeker |
According to the wiki, Steel Soul mode adds a permadeath rule on top of any of the four endings rather than a fifth ending of its own. The Knight cannot heal past the death and the file deletes on the next hit at 0 Masks.
The Knight's story stretches across most of Hallownest. Here are the spokes that fill in the parents, the siblings, and the bosses on the way.
