Soul Shrine (Shrine of Shaping) Risk of Rain 2

Seekers of the Storm DLC

The Shrine of Shaping (Soul Shrine) requires the Seekers of the Storm DLC. One player owning the DLC enables it for the entire lobby.

The Soul Shrine - officially the Shrine of Shaping - takes roughly 23% of max HP from all players and grants everyone an Extra Life for the current stage. It costs nothing to activate. Dead players are immediately revived instead of receiving the buff. Both effects disappear at the start of the next stage. One Shot Protection is disabled while Soul Cost is active. Only one can spawn per stage.

How It Works

Free to activate. No gold, no Lunar Coins. Walk up and interact. All alive players immediately receive Soul Cost and the Extra Life buff. 3 seconds of Immunity are granted on activation.
Soul Cost reduces max HP by ~23%. The shrine applies 3 stacks of Soul Cost, a Curse-type debuff. Curse math means 3 x 10% Curse = approximately 23% actual HP reduction (not the stated 30%). This also disables One Shot Protection for all affected players.
Extra Life revives you once on death. If you die with the Extra Life buff active, you are revived on the spot. The Extra Life is stage-scoped - it expires at the end of the stage whether used or not.
Dead players are immediately revived. If any players are dead when the shrine is activated, they respawn at the shrine location instead of receiving the Extra Life buff. Use it as an emergency revival tool in multiplayer.
One Shot Protection is disabled. Soul Cost is a Curse. While it's active, enemies can kill you in a single hit if that hit exceeds your current HP. Be more cautious against high-damage attacks, especially Stone Titan lasers and boss slams.
Cannot stack. Only one Shrine of Shaping spawns per stage. A second activation does nothing - you cannot accumulate multiple Extra Lives or compound the Soul Cost this way.
Extra Life priority. The Shrine of Shaping Extra Life activates before Dio's Best Friend, Pluripotent Larva, and Seed of Life. Using it preserves your item-based revival insurance.
The HP Reduction is ~23%, Not 30%

Soul Cost works through the Curse mechanic, not a flat percentage. 3 stacks of Curse = 0.3 Curse total = approximately 23% actual max HP loss. The reduction is non-linear, so higher existing Curse (from Shaped Glass etc.) results in even less additional loss from Soul Cost.

Synergies and Counters

Infusion
Infusion
Permanent HP per kill stacks throughout the run. More base HP means the ~23% reduction is less impactful in absolute terms. Stack early to buffer Soul Cost.
Personal Shield Generator
Personal Shield Generator
Shield is not affected by Soul Cost since it is a separate resource. Thick shield gives a buffer that One Shot Protection normally would while Soul Cost is active.
Tougher Times
Tougher Times
Block chance compensates for lost One Shot Protection. With OSP gone, a blocked hit that would have been lethal saves your life. Stack early in SotS runs.
Dio's Best Friend
Dio's Best Friend
Extra Life from Shrine fires first, then Dio's. You effectively get two consecutive revival chances before needing to find another Shrine or Dio's.
Shaped Glass
Shaped Glass
Already has 50% HP penalty and applies its own Curse. Soul Cost on top of existing Curse results in extreme HP reduction. Shrine of Shaping + Shaped Glass is very risky - OSP is already gone from Glass.
Pluripotent Larva (SotV)
Pluripotent Larva (SotV)
Same priority as Dio's - Shrine Extra Life fires first. Larva is preserved. But Larva's item corruption on use makes stacking both less desirable as a strategy.

When to Use It

Always use it. The Extra Life is worth more than the HP you lose. A 23% HP reduction is significant but survivable with careful play. The ability to absorb a fatal hit and continue the stage is almost always worth the trade.
Use it to revive dead teammates in multiplayer. If a teammate dies early in a stage, finding and activating the Shrine of Shaping immediately revives them at the shrine. This is more efficient than waiting for the next stage.
Use it before the Teleporter Event. The Extra Life is most valuable during the boss fight. Activate the shrine early in the stage to ensure the buff is active when you start the teleporter.
Be careful with Shaped Glass active. Glass already removes One Shot Protection and halves your HP. Adding Soul Cost on top further reduces your max HP via compounding Curse math. Use the shrine only if you have strong enough damage to kill fast.
Don't save it for emergencies. There's no scenario where not using the Shrine of Shaping is better than using it. The HP cost is temporary. The Extra Life upside is immediate and real. Activate on sight.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Soul Shrine in Risk of Rain 2?

The Soul Shrine is the community name for the Shrine of Shaping, added in the Seekers of the Storm DLC. When activated, it reduces all living players' max HP by roughly 23% (via 3 stacks of Soul Cost, a Curse-type debuff) and grants every player an Extra Life for the current stage. Dead players are immediately revived instead. The effects are removed at the start of the next stage.

How does the Shrine of Shaping (Soul Shrine) work?

Activating the shrine costs nothing - no gold or lunar coins. It applies Soul Cost (3x Curse = ~23% actual max HP reduction due to curse math) to all alive players, and grants them an Extra Life buff. If any players are dead when it's activated, they are revived at the shrine location rather than receiving the buff. The Extra Life triggers before Dio's Best Friend, Pluripotent Larva, or Seed of Life.

Does the Soul Shrine affect all players?

Yes. Activating the Shrine of Shaping applies Soul Cost and the Extra Life buff to every alive player simultaneously - not just the activating player. In multiplayer, this means the whole team loses ~23% max HP and gains an extra life. Dead players are revived at the shrine location.

Does the Extra Life from the Soul Shrine carry over to the next stage?

No. Both the Extra Life and the Soul Cost debuff are removed at the start of the next stage, whether the Extra Life was used or not. You get your ~23% max HP back when the stage ends, but lose the Extra Life entirely if it wasn't consumed. Using it during a tough Teleporter Event is the priority.

Can the Shrine of Shaping stack?

No. Only one Shrine of Shaping can spawn per stage. If somehow two shrines were present and both were activated, the second would not grant additional stacks of Soul Cost or Extra Life - you cannot stack to two Extra Lives through normal gameplay.

Does the Soul Shrine disable One Shot Protection?

Yes. Soul Cost is a Curse-type debuff that reduces max HP. While Soul Cost is active, One Shot Protection is disabled. This means a single hit can kill you outright if it deals more damage than your current HP total. Be especially careful with this active against high-damage enemies.
