Artifact of Evolution Risk of Rain 2

Artifact of Evolution

Monsters gain items between stages. One item per stage, following a fixed rarity cycle: Common, Common, Uncommon, Uncommon, Legendary - then repeating. Items are cumulative. By Stage 5, every enemy carries 5 items including a legendary. The code is on the forehead of the Twisted Scavenger in A Moment, Whole - one of the hardest code locations to reach in the game.

Code and Location

Code Pattern
Three clean rows: all Diamonds, all Squares, all Circles
A Moment Whole Risk of Rain 2
Code Location: A Moment, Whole (Twisted Scavenger)

The code appears on the forehead of the Twisted Scavenger. All four Twisted Scavenger variants carry it. Reach A Moment, Whole via Lunar Portal from the Bazaar Between Time.

Hardest Code to Reach

A Moment, Whole requires looping at least once and spending Lunar Coins at a Lunar Portal in the Bazaar. It's the most effort of any artifact code location. You can also memorize the code from guides and just enter it directly.

Item Rarity Per Stage

The sequence is fixed and repeats every 5 stages. All items are cumulative - enemies keep everything they've gained.

Stage Item Rarity Cumulative Items
Stage 1Common1 common item on all monsters
Stage 2Common2 common items on all monsters
Stage 3Uncommon2 common + 1 uncommon
Stage 4Uncommon2 common + 2 uncommon
Stage 5Legendary2 common + 2 uncommon + 1 legendary
Stage Loop 2 S1Common (repeats)Sequence resets: +1 more common added
What Monsters Cannot Gain

Blacklisted items, on-kill items, sprint items, equipment-related items, boss items, and equipment are all excluded. Lunar items are also excluded normally - but Eulogy Zero (SotV DLC) can replace any granted item with a lunar one at 5% chance per stack.

Which Monsters Gain Items

Combat Director (Monster team) = YES. All normal enemies spawned during gameplay gain items. This includes Void Reavers and Void Barnacles spawned during normal encounters and Void Invasions.
Camp Director (Void team) = NO. Enemies spawned inside Void Seeds are always on team Void. They never gain Evolution items.
Shopkeeper Newt = NO. Newt is on team Neutral and is not spawned by any Director. No Evolution items.
Artifact Reliquary = NO. Does not gain Evolution items regardless of the artifact being active during a trial.

Best Items for Evolution Runs

Old Guillotine
Old Guillotine
Evolved monsters are harder to kill - Old Guillotine's execution below 13% HP matters more the more items they have.
Brainstalks
Brainstalks
Every kill resets cooldowns. With itemized monsters dying in bursts, constant Brainstalks uptime keeps skill usage flowing.
AtG Missile Mk. 1
AtG Missile Mk. 1
Proc-based damage that scales independently. Itemized monsters with high HP pools make the missile proc even more impactful.
Razorwire
Razorwire
Itemized monsters hit harder and more often. Razorwire's retaliatory burst punishes their increased aggression.
Armor-Piercing Rounds
Evolved bosses with items are boss-tier threats. APR deals +20% more to all of them including itemized champions.
Tougher Times
Block chance against proc-heavy evolved monsters. By Stage 4 enemies may have AtG Missiles - Tougher Times can block those.

Best Combos

Evolution + Command
Evolution + Command

Choose every item to specifically counter the evolved monster pool. Stack Old Guillotine, Brainstalks, and APR to handle increasingly dangerous enemies.

Evolution + Sacrifice
Evolution + Sacrifice

Itemized monsters drop items on death. By Stage 4 each evolved kill drops a higher-value item (monster has uncommons and legendaries). High risk, high reward.

Evolution + Honor
Evolution + Honor

All monsters are elites AND gaining items each stage. By Stage 3 you face itemized elites with Malachite shields or Glacial freezes. Very high difficulty.

Evolution + Chaos
Evolution + Chaos

Evolved monsters kill each other with their proc items. Gasoline, AtG, and band procs from itemized enemies deal friendly fire. Chaotic self-destruction runs.

Evolution alone
Evolution alone

Pure challenge modifier. Stage 1 and 2 feel normal. Stage 3 gets harder. Stage 4 is brutal. Stage 5 with 2 uncommons and 1 legendary on every enemy is a serious endgame challenge.

Evolution + Glass

5x damage cuts through even heavily itemized monsters. But they hit back harder too. At 10% HP, a Lemurian with AtG Missiles can one-shot you. Very high skill requirement.

Tips

Rush early stages. Stages 1 and 2 are nearly normal. Abuse the weak enemy windows to build items aggressively. Your item lead in early stages is the only buffer against Stage 4+ difficulty spikes.
Old Guillotine is essential. By Stage 4, enemies with uncommon items are dangerous in their final 10-20% HP range. Old Guillotine's execution cuts that danger phase entirely.
Watch for Razorwire and band procs on enemies. Evolved monsters can gain proc items. A Lemurian with AtG Missile fires rockets. A Beetle with Kjaro's Band fires flame tornados. Learn to read the visual cues for enemy item procs.
Scavengers get Evolution items too. Scavengers that naturally appear gain Evolution items on top of their already large natural inventory. Late-loop Scavengers with Evolution active are among the most dangerous enemies in the game.
Obliterate is safer than looping. Looping with Evolution means Stage 6 enemies have 6 items, Stage 7 has 7, etc. The sequence keeps adding items. Obliterating at Stage 5 is a valid strategy if your build can't handle loop difficulty.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does the Artifact of Evolution do in Risk of Rain 2?

The Artifact of Evolution gives monsters one item per stage. The rarity follows a fixed sequence: Common, Common, Uncommon, Uncommon, Legendary, then repeats. Items are cumulative - monsters keep all previously gained items as the run progresses. By Stage 5, every enemy has two commons, two uncommons, and one legendary.

What is the Artifact of Evolution code?

The Artifact of Evolution code is ♦♦♦ ■■■ ●●● - three rows of all Diamonds, all Squares, all Circles. The code appears on the forehead of the Twisted Scavenger in A Moment, Whole, the hidden realm accessed via Lunar Portal. All four Twisted Scavenger variants have the code.

What items can monsters NOT gain with Artifact of Evolution?

Monsters cannot gain blacklisted items, on-kill items, sprint-related items, equipment-related items, boss items, or equipment. They normally cannot gain lunar items either - except if a player has Eulogy Zero (SotV DLC), which can replace granted items with lunar ones at a 5% chance.

Do all monsters gain items with Artifact of Evolution?

Not quite. Monsters spawned by a Combat Director on team Monster gain items. Void enemies spawned by the Camp Director (inside Void Seeds) do not - they spawn on team Void. However, Void Reavers spawned during normal gameplay and Void Invasions DO gain items since those are spawned by Monster-team Directors. Newt and the Artifact Reliquary do not gain items.

How do I find the Artifact of Evolution code?

The code is on the forehead of the Twisted Scavenger in A Moment, Whole. To reach A Moment, Whole, you need to accumulate 5 Lunar Coins and spend them at a Lunar Portal (Blue Orb) after completing a teleporter event in the Bazaar Between Time - or find the portal naturally. The Twisted Scavenger spawns as the boss of A Moment, Whole.

Does Artifact of Evolution make the game harder?

Yes, progressively. Stages 1-2 are nearly identical to normal. Stage 3 becomes noticeably harder with uncommon items on enemies. By Stage 4 the difficulty spike is significant. Stage 5 with every enemy carrying 5 items including a legendary is one of the hardest standard-stage experiences in the game without other difficulty artifacts.
