Forest Tier 1 Challenge •
Survive ~10 minutes without moving or jumping • Updated March 2026
The Megabonk AFK Gaming Challenge requires you to reach the Final Swarm without using WASD or the spacebar - you cannot move or jump for the entire run. You can still rotate and aim with the mouse, but your survival depends entirely on passive weapons, pickup range, and survivability scaling. This guide covers the best characters, the exact build priority order, which weapons and tomes to pick and avoid, game-changing items, and the boss strategies that most guides miss.
Challenge Rules
WASD and Space are disabled - no movement, no jumping. You can still use the mouse to rotate and aim. You can still select upgrades, open chests if enemies push you into one, and pick up items that fall near you. The run ends when you reach the Final Swarm (approximately 10 minutes on Forest maps). Order of bosses is random - you may face Stone Golem or Chunkham first.
How to Beat the AFK Gaming Challenge in Megabonk
Step 1 - Set Up the Toggler (Optional)
The Toggler (Optional but Helpful)
The Toggler unlocks after purchasing 40 items in the shop (costs 50 Silver). It is not required to beat the challenge, but it helps. It lets you visit the Unlocks screen and disable specific weapons, tomes, and items from appearing in your upgrade choices. For AFK runs, consider disabling: Revolver, Bow, Flash, Sniper, Movement Speed Tome, Damage Tome, and Spike Tome. This narrows your loot pool toward more useful picks. If you don't have 40 unlocks yet, you can still beat the challenge without it - it's purely a quality-of-life improvement.
Step 2 - Pick Your Character

Athena
Best Overall
Default weapon: Aegis
Athena's Aegis kills enemies at point-blank range, guaranteeing early XP without needing Attraction Tome immediately. Her passive grants Thorns on every level-up, which synergises powerfully with Quantity Tome. Her biggest hidden advantage: by looking at a nearby item, enemies hitting her back push her toward it - giving limited but real movement toward chests and XP shards.
Pro tip: Face toward a chest or XP shard, let enemies hit you from behind - Aegis bounces push you slowly toward it. This "forced movement" trick is unique to Athena and is the reason most experienced players rate her above Megachad.

Megachad
Easiest to Unlock
Default weapon: Aura
Aura deals constant 360° passive damage to every enemy in range without any aiming. Megachad's high HP pool and Flex ability (stuns enemies and negates damage) make him the most beginner-friendly option. The main drawback: Aura kills enemies slightly outside pickup range, making Attraction Tome even more mandatory than with Athena.
Warning: Don't upgrade Aura size too early. Larger Aura kills enemies further away, dropping XP out of your pickup radius before you have Attraction Tome.
Roberto Advanced
Default weapon: Scythe
Added in the Spooky update. Scythe slashes in a full circle around the player - excellent coverage without aiming. Roberto's Hoarder ability spawns a free chest every 60 seconds, giving you item access you'd otherwise never get in a stationary run. Prioritize Size Tome to extend Scythe range, and HP Regen for survivability.
Note: Free chests from Hoarder are game-changing here - items like Campfire and Idle Juice can appear without you ever reaching a chest location.
Step 3 - Build Priority Order
Pick in this order when the options appear. If your top choice isn't available, take the next item down. Reset the run if you reach level 4 without seeing Attraction Tome.
| Pick |
What to Take |
Why |
| 1 |
Axe or Chunkers Weapon - Recommended Start |
A solid early weapon choice before Attraction Tome arrives. AoE knockback helps keep enemies manageable in the first 2 minutes. This isn't the only option - Sword, Tornado, or any AoE melee weapon works too. Take whatever strong AoE option appears first. |
| 2 |
 Attraction Tome MustTome |
The single most important upgrade in the entire run. Extends XP pickup range so shards come to you. One or two levels is enough - you don't need to max it. Reset the run if it hasn't appeared by level 3–4. |
| 3 |
 Shield Tome High PriorityTome |
Provides regenerating shields between damage spikes. Especially valuable against bosses. Shield only regenerates if you don't take damage for a few seconds - ensure you have enough weapons to create breathing room first. |
| 4 |
 Aura High PriorityWeapon |
Now that Attraction Tome is active, Aura's 360° kill zone feeds XP back to you. The deadzone issue is solved. Start upgrading Aura size and cooldown once you have at least level 2 Attraction. |
| 5 |
 Quantity Tome Tome |
More Aegis charges, more Chunkers projectiles, more Aura pulses. One of the highest value tomes for AFK builds because it multiplies every weapon's output simultaneously. |
| 6 |
 HP Regen Tome Tome |
Passive healing between waves and during downtime. Critical survival tool against the first mini-boss when your build isn't yet complete. Take this early if you're struggling to survive past minute 3. |
| 7 |
Attack Speed / Knockback Tome |
Attack Speed recharges Aegis faster and increases DPS across all weapons. Knockback pushes bosses and elites away before they can stack damage on you - especially useful against the Stone Golem. |
Weapons - Use vs Avoid
✓ Use These
✓

Aura
360° passive damage. The core AFK weapon - kills everything in range automatically. Best with Cooldown, Size, and Quantity tomes.
✓

Aegis
Absorbs one hit, then blasts enemies backward. Nearly mandatory - each charge buys you crucial seconds during boss phases and elite rushes.
✓

Axe
Wide arc, great knockback, no aiming needed. Keeps enemies pushed back while Aura handles close-range damage. Scales well with most tomes.
✓

Sword / Katana
Directional - you can rotate to aim these. Creates a kill zone in front of you and lets you slowly influence which direction enemies approach from.
✓

Chunkers
Lobbed AoE with solid knockback. Good early pick before Aura is available. Gives Aegis time to recharge between hits from elites.
✓
Scythe (Roberto only)
Full circular slash covering all directions. Roberto's default - prioritize Size Tome to extend its range and it handles early waves without help.
✓

Tornado
Strong knockback that pushes elites away from your position. Good fourth weapon pick once the core three are established.
✓

Blood Magic / Frostwalker
Area-based with freeze/slow utility. Frostwalker slows enemies before they reach you; Blood Magic adds lifesteal sustain to melee builds.
✗ Avoid These
✗
Revolver / Bow
Aimed projectile weapons require repositioning to be effective. Stationary, they leave half the screen completely unprotected and most shots miss grouped enemies.
✗

Flash / Sniper Rifle
Directional, high-cooldown weapons. Nearly useless when you can't reposition to face incoming enemies.
✗

Poison Flask
Thrown - works somewhat stationary, but kills enemies at range which drops XP out of pickup radius before Attraction Tome is active.
✗

Bananarang
Returns to player which sounds good, but trajectory is unpredictable without movement and it frequently whiffs on grouped enemies.
Tomes - Use vs Avoid
✓ Prioritize These
✓

Attraction Tome
#1 PRIORITYExtends XP pickup range. Without it you barely level up and get overwhelmed. One or two levels is enough - banish it after that to make room for other tomes.
✓

Shield Tome
Regenerating shields between damage windows. Best defensive tome for this challenge. Stacks especially well with Aegis.
✓

HP Regen Tome
Passive healing. Critical for surviving mini-boss phases when you can't kite. Take early if the first boss is Stone Golem.
✓

Quantity Tome
More projectiles, more Aegis charges, more AoE pulses. Multiplicative value across your entire weapon set.
✓

Attack Speed / Cooldown Tome
Faster Aegis recharge, more Aura pulses per second. Especially important for sustaining through boss damage phases.
✓

Knockback Tome
Pushes elites and mini-bosses away before they can stack damage. Gives your Aegis time to recharge between hits from heavy enemies.
✓
Lifesteal Tome
Each hit has a % chance to restore 1 HP. With high Attack Speed and multiple weapons you can recover meaningful health even during boss phases.
✓

Thorns Tome (Athena only)
Vastly stronger than Athena's passive Thorns alone. Synergises with Quantity Tome and Aegis procs. The Athena + Thorns + Quantity combo is one of the strongest AFK setups.
✗ Skip These
✗

Damage Tome
You don't lack damage in this challenge - you lack survivability and XP. Damage is the last thing you need more of before minute 8.
✗
Movement Speed Tome
You are not moving. Zero value.
✗
Spike Tome
Adds damage on hit but you already outdamage most enemies. The investment is better spent on survivability.
✗

Luck / XP Tome
Only a 10-minute run - Luck and XP scaling don't have enough time to compound meaningfully. XP Tome is acceptable very early if Attraction isn't available yet.
✗

Agility Tome
Evasion and dodge are movement-dependent mechanics. Wasted in a stationary run.
Game-Changing Items - Grab These Immediately
You can only access items if enemies push you into a chest or Roberto's Hoarder ability spawns one. If you do get a chest, prioritize these above everything else.

Idle Juice
+1% damage per second standing still, up to +100% damage
Tailor-made for this challenge. Since you never move, you accumulate the full +100% damage bonus passively. This effectively doubles your damage output and is the single best item for AFK runs.

Campfire
Heals HP while standing still
Again, perfectly suited - you are always standing still. Provides consistent passive healing that removes the need for as many HP Regen tomes, freeing upgrade slots for offensive choices.

Sucky Magnet
Periodically pulls all XP shards on screen to you
Supplements or even replaces Attraction Tome for XP collection. If you get this early from a Roberto chest, you may be able to skip upgrading Attraction further and invest elsewhere.

Boss Buster
+15% damage against Bosses and Elite enemies
The two phases most likely to kill you are the Stone Golem and Chunkham fights. A flat +15% boss damage shortens those windows significantly and reduces the damage you absorb.

Chonkplate
Enables Overheal (up to ~75% above max HP) + Lifesteal
Combine with Campfire or HP Regen for a near-immortal sustain loop. Especially powerful with Athena whose passive damage bonus increases as health drops - Chonkplate keeps you overhealed so you never trigger the low-HP threshold unintentionally.

Mirror
Brief invulnerability when hit, reflects damage
Excellent survivability tool during boss phases. Paired with Kevin (punches you but cannot kill you), the Kevin + Mirror combo creates chained invulnerability frames - but requires high attack speed to maximise.
Boss Survival - Stone Golem vs Chunkham
Both bosses spawn at random - you may face either one first. Know both before you start.
Stone Golem
Mini-boss - appears at random
Main attack: Launches sharp rocks from the ground that send you flying across the map. This is the scariest AFK mechanic - being launched can drop you into a wall of enemies with no Aegis charge available.
Counter: Keep at least one Aegis charge ready before the Golem spawns. The launch sends you flying but the Aegis can absorb the hit. Stack Knockback Tome to push the Golem away between rock attacks. HP Regen is critical here to recover between launches.
Chunkham the Terrible
Final boss - appears at random
Main attack: Mud burst that slows player movement (already irrelevant since you can't move). Also summons additional regular enemies during the fight, increasing pressure on your survivability.
Counter: Chunkham is typically more manageable than the Stone Golem for AFK builds since his slowing mechanic does nothing. Focus on Quantity Tome and Attack Speed to burst him down quickly before elite enemies overwhelm you.
Common Mistakes That Kill Most Runs
❌
Upgrading Aura before getting Attraction Tome
Larger Aura kills enemies further from your position, dropping XP shards outside your pickup radius. You'll barely level up and be overwhelmed by minute 4. Always secure Attraction Tome first, then grow Aura.
❌
Not resetting a bad start
If you reach level 4 without seeing Attraction Tome, restart immediately. The challenge is heavily RNG-dependent. A run without early Attraction is nearly unwinnable - don't waste 10 minutes on it. Reset and try again.
❌
Skipping Toggler setup
Running without using the Toggler first means movement tomes, directional weapons, and useless items clog your upgrade pool. Every wasted upgrade choice is a potential death. The Toggler is the single biggest win rate improvement you can make before the run starts.
❌
Taking ranged weapons
Revolver, Bow, and Sniper cover only the direction you're facing. Stationary, enemies flood in from every angle and half the screen is unprotected. Stick to AoE melee weapons (Aura, Axe, Aegis, Chunkers) that damage in all directions.
❌
Spawning near the center of the map
Center spawns mean enemies can approach from every side simultaneously. Edge or corner spawns cut the approach angles and make survivability dramatically easier. If you spawn in the center with bad early upgrades, consider restarting regardless of your first picks.
❌
Ignoring the explosive enemies
Green explosive enemies that get close and detonate will send you flying across the map - potentially into a cluster of elites with no Aegis ready. If you see one approaching, spend an Aegis charge early to eliminate it before it detonates. Being launched by an explosive near a boss is almost always fatal.
Advanced Tips
The Athena Forced Movement Trick
Face your cursor toward a nearby item, XP shard, or chest. Enemies hitting your back will knock you slightly toward whatever you're facing. With Aegis active, the bounce from enemies behind you provides slow but real movement toward items. This is the main reason Athena outperforms Megachad in experienced hands.
Exploit Knocked Props
Large props on the map (pillars, rocks) can be knocked over by enemies, sometimes creating barriers that block elite and mini-boss pathing. If enemies knock a pillar perpendicular to your position it can buy significant breathing room during boss phases. This is RNG-dependent but keep it in mind when near large environment objects.
Banish Attraction After Level 2
Once Attraction Tome is at level 2, its pickup range is sufficient for the rest of the run. Banish any further Attraction offerings to free up your reroll pool for Shield Tome, Quantity, and Attack Speed. You only have limited banishes so use them wisely - but Attraction Tome past level 2 is genuinely a wasted pick.
About Explosive Enemies
The green explosive creepers are the most dangerous enemy type in the AFK challenge. If one detonates near you while your Aegis is on cooldown, you get launched across the map into the middle of a swarm with no shield. Always spend an Aegis charge on an approaching explosive before it gets within detonation range - losing the charge is worth it every time.
