A buried kingdom, a forgotten god of light, and children of Void built to cage her. That is the whole story in one line.
Hollow Knight tells its story almost entirely through scenery, item text, and one-line conversations. Underneath all of it is a single conflict: light against void, told through a dead kingdom.
The wiki states the oldest power in this world is the
Void, found at the bottom of the Abyss. Its ancient enemy is the Radiance, a higher being of light with power over the Dream Realm.
Between those two forces sits Hallownest, the kingdom the
Pale King built and then doomed. The Infection, the Vessels, and the player's own quest all trace back to that one rivalry.
This guide lays out the timeline in order: the world before the Pale King, the rise and fall of Hallownest, the Infection, the Vessels, and where the Knight fits into the ending.
Void versus the Radiance, the two oldest higher beings.
The Infection, the forgotten Radiance reaching minds through dreams.
The Vessels, void-filled children meant to seal her away.
A discarded Vessel returning to finish what the Hollow Knight could not.Long before Hallownest, an ancient civilisation worshipped the Void at the bottom of the Abyss, then vanished for reasons the game never spells out. The Void stayed behind.
According to the wiki, the Void's ancient enemy was the
Radiance, "a light brighter than Essence" with some power over the Dream Realm. She created the
Moth Tribe, who worshipped her and built a statue on Hallownest's Crown.
The wiki notes other tribes shared the wastes too: the Mosskin who followed Unn, the Mantis Tribe, and the spider tribe. In this era the bugs were largely mindless, closer to animals than the citizens Hallownest would later hold.
Hallownest began when the Pale King, a Wyrm, arrived and gave the bugs minds, language, and order. He founded the kingdom and became its god-king, and the Radiance slowly faded from memory.
Per the wiki, the Pale King and his queen, the
White Lady, ruled together as higher beings. The kingdom thrived on intellect and the Soul drawn from living bugs, with the Soul Sanctum's scholars pushing that power further.
The catch was belief. As the bugs gave their worship to the Pale King instead of the Radiance, she was forgotten almost entirely. A higher being who feeds on the minds of believers does not simply disappear when ignored.
Much of this history is told through the Hunter, the Snail Shaman lineage, and tablet inscriptions, not cutscenes. In actual play, the Dream Nail on statues and corpses is how most of the timeline gets filled in.
The Infection is the forgotten Radiance fighting back. Per the wiki, as she was nearly erased from memory she began reaching the bugs of Hallownest through their dreams, which is the plague the game calls the Infection.
Infected bugs turn aggressive, leak orange light, and lose themselves to her will. Our
Infection guide covers the in-game spread, but the lore point is simple: the plague is not a disease, it is a god reclaiming worship by force.
According to the wiki, the kingdom collapsed under it. Citizens became husks, the Pale King's court fell apart, and Hallownest emptied into the ruin the Knight explores. The Radiance had no body to strike, so a body had to be built to hold her.
The Pale King's solution was to seal the Radiance inside a Vessel with no mind and no will, so she could not influence it. The wiki states these Vessels were his children with the White Lady, born in the Abyss with Void filling their shells.
The plan needed a perfectly empty Vessel. Per the wiki, many were discarded for having a mind or will of their own, left to die in the
Abyss. One was judged pure, taken out, named the
Hollow Knight, and raised in the White Palace.
It was not truly hollow. Because the Hollow Knight loved the Pale King, the smallest idea took root, and the Radiance leaked through. The three
Dreamers, Lurien, Monomon, and Herrah, then sealed the failing Vessel inside the Black Egg as a living dam against the plague.
The player is another discarded Vessel. The Knight climbed out of the Abyss, left Hallownest as a child, and returns at the start of the game drawn back to finish the work the Hollow Knight could not.
Per the wiki, breaking the three Dreamer seals lets the Knight fight the Hollow Knight and take its place, which is the base ending. Claiming the
Void Heart and using the Awoken Dream Nail instead lets the Knight enter the dream and kill the Radiance directly.
The Godmaster content pushes further. The wiki specifies that ascending the Pantheon unites the Void under the
Shade Lord and destroys the Radiance for good, the outcome the endings guide calls Embrace the Void.
Higher beings are the gods of this world, and the wiki notes their power grows with the focus and belief of others. Three matter most to the main story.
| Being | Domain | Role |
|---|---|---|
The Radiance | Light and dreams | Source of the Infection |
The Pale King | Mind and order | Founder of Hallownest |
The Void | Darkness and unmaking | The force that ends her |
The wiki adds others on the edges: Unn, mother of the Mosskin, and the Nightmare's Heart that powers
Grimm and the Grimm Troupe. They are part of the same theme, that gods here live and die on whether they are remembered.
The lore runs through the endings, the Radiance, and the void beneath the Abyss. These guides follow each thread to its source.
