Unstable Tesla Coil Risk of Rain 2

Unstable Tesla Coil RoR2

"Fire out lightning that hits 3 (+2 per stack) enemies for 200% base damage every 0.5s. The Tesla Coil switches off every 10 seconds." Red legendary item. Fires bouncing lightning in a 35m radius while active, cycling on and off every 10 seconds (50% uptime). Each bolt deals 200% damage with 0.3 proc coefficient and ignores terrain. Stacking raises the number of targets per bolt, not the damage or frequency. Best on melee survivors who stay inside the 35m range.

How Unstable Tesla Coil Works

The coil fires lightning continuously while active, then shuts off for exactly 10 seconds. Active for 10 seconds, off for 10 seconds, repeat. While active, bolts fire at up to 3 targets every 0.5 seconds within a 35m radius. The on/off state is visible on the item icon in the HUD and by electricity particles on your character model.
The actual fire rate is faster than the tooltip implies. The tooltip says every 0.5 seconds, but the coil technically fires every 1/12th of a second. Each micro-burst can hit up to 3 targets, which are blacklisted from being hit again until the 0.5s window resets. In practice, 1 stack can hit up to 18 unique targets in a single 0.5s window - 6 bolts x 3 bounces each - in a dense enemy cluster.
Stacking adds targets, not damage or frequency. Each additional Unstable Tesla Coil adds 2 more bounce targets. At 1 stack: 3 targets. At 2 stacks: 5 targets. At 3 stacks: 7 targets. Damage stays at 200% per bolt and the fire rate stays at every 0.5s. Stacking is excellent for dense crowd scenarios but adds diminishing value when enemy counts are low.
Lightning ignores terrain entirely. Bolts pass through walls, floors, and any obstacle. This means you can damage enemies through cover that normally blocks attacks. On maps with complex geometry like Sky Meadow, Rallypoint Delta, or Abyssal Depths, the Tesla Coil hits enemies you cannot even see yet.
35m radius requires being close to enemies. Ranged survivors who kite far from enemies will rarely hit anything. Melee survivors like Loader and Mercenary who stay inside enemy clusters get full value from every bolt. The 35m limit is shorter than it sounds in practice - fast enemies spread out quickly at later stages.
Wake of Vultures elite effects transfer to Tesla bolt hits. If you have Wake of Vultures active with a Blazing elite power, every enemy hit by the Tesla Coil bolts gets ignited. The same applies to all elite affixes through Wake of Vultures. This can turn the Tesla Coil into a massive status-effect spreader across entire enemy groups.

Stacking scales crowd damage, not single-target damage. Against one enemy, additional stacks provide zero extra benefit since all bounces hit the same pool of targets. Against dense packs of 10+ enemies on later stages, each additional stack meaningfully increases total DPS output across the group.

Best Survivors

Loader RoR2
Loader S Tier
Loader's grapple pulls her directly into enemy clusters, keeping her inside the 35m radius at all times. Her Thunderslam and Charged Gauntlet deal enormous single-hit damage, satisfying the Macho challenge easily. Tesla Coil adds passive AoE on top of her already high melee damage, letting her clear groups while focusing on one target.
Mercenary RoR2
Mercenary S Tier
Mercenary is always at melee range, keeping every Tesla bolt in range. Eviscerate's rapid multi-hit keeps Mercenary in the center of enemy groups. Tesla Coil provides free passive damage to surrounding enemies while Mercenary focuses on his primary target, turning him into an effective crowd clearer despite his single-target kit.
Acrid RoR2
Acrid A Tier
Acrid's melee-range kit keeps him in the thick of combat. His poison and blight DoTs synergize with the 0.3 proc coefficient of Tesla bolts triggering additional proc items. Tesla Coil covers Acrid's relative weakness in clearing multiple enemies fast, since poison spreads over time rather than bursting.
MUL-T RoR2
MUL-T A Tier
MUL-T's high base HP means he can comfortably stay close to enemy groups. His Nail Gun fires extremely rapidly, generating high proc rates alongside Tesla bolts. The combination of sustained rapid fire and passive Tesla damage makes MUL-T a reliable pick for this item, even though he is not strictly a melee survivor.
Huntress RoR2
Huntress B Tier
Huntress naturally kites away from enemies, often staying beyond the 35m radius during ranged play. She benefits when Arrow Rain pulls her into melee range briefly, but she rarely maintains full Tesla uptime compared to melee survivors. The item works on her but underperforms relative to her optimal kit.

Key Synergies

Wake of Vultures RoR2Wake of Vultures spreads elite effects through every Tesla bolt. With Wake of Vultures active from a Blazing elite kill, every Tesla bolt ignites enemies hit. Glacial elite power slows all Tesla targets. Overloading power shields them briefly (minor). The Tesla Coil fires constantly at up to 18 targets per half second during active periods, spreading these effects across the entire nearby enemy group instantly.
57 Leaf Clover Risk of Rain 257 Leaf Clover improves proc chains from Tesla bolt hits. Tesla bolts have 0.3 proc coefficient. With Clover re-rolling failed procs for favorable outcomes, Ukulele, bleed, and on-hit items trigger more reliably from each bolt. On a survivor with high enemy density contact, Tesla + Clover creates a reliable cascade of on-hit effects across entire rooms.
Shatterspleen RoR2Shatterspleen + Tesla on melee survivors creates group bleed explosions. At 100% crit, Shatterspleen bleeds every enemy hit. Tesla bolts hit up to 18 targets per 0.5s at 0.3 proc coefficient, generating bleed stacks across groups. Each bleed stack that reaches the HP threshold triggers a crit explosion hitting nearby enemies. Dense enemy groups become chain-exploding with enough Shatterspleen stacks.
The 10-second off window is the item's core drawback. During boss fights, teleporter events, or any sustained combat encounter, the Tesla Coil will be off exactly half the time. There is no way to extend the active window or trigger it manually. Position yourself to deal maximum damage during the active window and accept the cooldown period. Brainstalks does not affect the cycle since Tesla Coil is not an activated skill.

How to Unlock - Macho Challenge

Deal 5000 damage in a single hit
1
Loader's Charged Gauntlet is the easiest method. Hold charge fully and release against a high-HP boss. With Shaped Glass (+100% damage, -50% HP) the damage output is extreme. On later stages Loader can hit 5000 in one punch without any special setup.
2
Railgunner hits enormous single-shot damage on weakpoints. Stack damage items and target a high-level boss. A fully charged M1 on a weakpoint at Stage 4+ frequently clears 5000.
3
Shaped Glass doubles base damage. Stack 2-3 alongside other damage reds and use any high-damage skill against a boss enemy. The 50% HP reduction is the tradeoff.
4
The challenge counts toward any single damage instance. H3AD-5T v2 (headstomper) fall damage can reach 5000 on long drops with enough HP scaling.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does Unstable Tesla Coil do in Risk of Rain 2?

Unstable Tesla Coil is a red legendary item that periodically fires bouncing lightning at nearby enemies. While active, it strikes up to 3 targets every 0.5 seconds within a 35m radius, dealing 200% base damage per bolt with a 0.3 proc coefficient. The item cycles between 10 seconds active and 10 seconds off, giving 50% uptime. Lightning ignores terrain. Stacking adds 2 more targets per stack but does not increase damage or fire rate.

Why does Unstable Tesla Coil turn off?

The on/off cycle is the item's built-in drawback as a legendary. It is active for 10 seconds then inactive for 10 seconds, cycling throughout the run. There is no way to prevent the off period or extend the active window. Brainstalks does not affect it since Tesla Coil is a passive item effect, not an activated skill. The 50% uptime is accounted for in the item's high damage output when active.

Does Unstable Tesla Coil stack?

Yes. Each additional stack adds 2 more bounce targets per bolt. At 1 stack you hit 3 targets, at 2 stacks 5 targets, at 3 stacks 7 targets. Damage per bolt stays at 200% and fire rate stays at every 0.5 seconds. Stacking is most valuable in large enemy groups where extra targets are always available. Against single bosses, additional stacks provide no benefit.

Which survivors are best with Unstable Tesla Coil?

Melee survivors that stay close to enemy groups get the most value. Loader is the best match - her grapple keeps her inside the 35m radius and her high single-target damage means Tesla handles AoE while she handles the main target. Mercenary similarly benefits from always being at melee range. Ranged survivors like Huntress who kite away from enemies frequently exit the 35m radius and miss out on significant uptime.

How do you unlock Unstable Tesla Coil?

Complete the Macho challenge by dealing 5000 damage in a single hit. Loader's Charged Gauntlet on a boss at Stage 3 or later is the most reliable method. Railgunner on a weakpoint also works. Shaped Glass doubles base damage and makes the threshold easier to reach. The challenge counts any single damage instance, including equipment damage.
