Risk of Rain 2 Focus Crystal

Risk of Rain 2 Focus Crystal

"Increase damage to enemies within 13m by 20% (+20% per stack)." White common item, no unlock required. Applies a flat additive damage multiplier to all hits against enemies within a 13-meter radius of you. Works on direct attacks, DoTs, and proc items - anything that deals damage to an enemy inside the ring. A red ring on the ground marks the radius. Stacks additively.

How Focus Crystal Works

Distance is checked at the moment damage connects, not when you attack. If you fire a projectile from 20m away but the enemy is within 13m when the projectile lands, Focus Crystal applies. Conversely, if you fire from 10m but the enemy runs to 15m before impact, it does not apply. This means mobile survivors who close distance after firing can still proc it - and mobile enemies who kite away can avoid it.
Works on all damage sources - direct, DoT, and procs. Every tick of Bleed, Burn, and Blight checks the player-to-enemy distance at the moment each tick fires. A DoT applied at 5m will benefit from Focus Crystal on each tick as long as you remain within 13m. This makes Focus Crystal particularly strong for DoT-heavy builds where the damage streams continuously while you stay in range.
Proc items calculate off base damage, then check distance at impact. An AtG Missile Mk. 1 triggered by a Focus Crystal-buffed hit deals 300% of the original pre-Crystal base damage - not the boosted value. However, if the missile then hits an enemy within 13m of you, the missile itself gets the Focus Crystal bonus applied. Each hit event is independent.
Stacks additively - 5 crystals = +100% damage within 13m. Unlike many multipliers in RoR2 that use hyperbolic scaling, Focus Crystal adds its bonus linearly. 1 crystal = +20%, 5 crystals = +100%, 10 crystals = +200%. Each additional crystal is equally valuable as the last. There is no diminishing return on the bonus itself - only the opportunity cost of not taking other items.
The 13m ring is visible as a red circle on the ground. This is not decorative - it accurately represents the range threshold. Watch which enemies are inside the ring during combat to understand when you are getting the bonus. The ring is centered on you at all times, moving as you move.

Best Survivors

Mercenary RoR2
Mercenary S Tier
Eviscerate keeps Mercenary locked to enemies at melee range continuously. Every tick of Eviscerate, every Blinding Assault hit, every Whirlwind slash - all within 13m at all times. Focus Crystal has near-100% uptime and applies to every single attack. One of the best white items Mercenary can hold.
Loader RoR2
Loader S Tier
Grapple Hook pulls enemies into melee range instantly. Charged Knuckle and Thunderslam both deal massive base damage - Focus Crystal's additive bonus applies to those already-huge numbers. Loader naturally plays at 0-10m from targets, well inside the 13m ring at all times.
Acrid RoR2
Acrid S Tier
Melee-range DoT machine. Every Blight and Poison tick is checked at the moment it fires. As long as Acrid stays on top of enemies (which Eviscerate-style leap enables), every DoT tick benefits from Focus Crystal. Acrid's bite primary attack is melee anyway, making this nearly free.
Bandit RoR2
Bandit A Tier
Backstab makes Bandit want to approach from behind at close range. 13m is generous enough that mid-range Burst shots also qualify when Bandit dashes in. Focus Crystal rewards aggressive Bandit play - the same positioning that maximizes backstab crit also keeps enemies inside the ring.
MUL-T RoR2
MUL-T A Tier
Transport Mode closes distance instantly. Rebar Puncher and Nailgun both deal damage at close range. MUL-T can Tank hits with high HP and armor, making close-range combat more sustainable. Focus Crystal rewards the aggressive, face-to-face playstyle MUL-T excels at.
Huntress RoR2
Huntress C Tier
Huntress attacks at range and kites to survive. Getting within 13m defeats her entire strategy. Arrow Rain AoE is one case where she can be near enemies briefly, but it's not reliable enough to build around. Focus Crystal is one of the few common items Huntress actively wants to skip.

Key Synergies

Shatterspleen RoR2Shatterspleen + Focus Crystal is a close-range combo that feeds itself. Shatterspleen makes crits apply Bleed. Focus Crystal boosts every crit that hits within 13m. The explosion that follows also checks distance - if the exploding enemy is within 13m when it dies, the explosion damage is boosted too. Melee survivors stacking both deal massive crit damage and get boosted explosions from every bleed death.
Ignition Tank RoR2Ignition Tank burn ticks each get the Focus Crystal bonus. Ignition Tank quadruples burn DoT damage, and every tick of that burn is individually checked against the 13m range. A melee survivor with Ignition Tank and Focus Crystal burning a nearby enemy gets multiplied DoT damage where every tick benefits from both items simultaneously.
Laser Scope RoR2Laser Scope and Focus Crystal multiply together on melee crits. Laser Scope raises the crit damage multiplier. Focus Crystal adds +20% per stack to the base damage before crit is applied. The two bonuses compound - a 3x crit multiplier on a hit already boosted by +100% Focus Crystal results in dramatically higher numbers than either item alone.
Repulsion Armor Plate RoR2Repulsion Armor Plate enables the close-range positioning Focus Crystal needs. Getting within 13m means taking more damage from enemies. Repulsion Armor Plate reduces the chip damage from being at melee range, making it safer to maintain the Focus Crystal uptime window. The two items are natural defensive-offensive pairing for melee builds.
Singularity Band corrupts all Focus Crystals (void version). Singularity Band is the SotV void item that corrupts Focus Crystal. It fires a black hole that pulls enemies together on proc. Rather than a flat damage boost at melee range, you get occasional AoE crowd control. Whether Singularity Band is better depends on whether you value reliable consistent damage (Crystal) over proc-based positioning control (Band).

Frequently Asked Questions

What does Focus Crystal do in Risk of Rain 2?

Focus Crystal is a common white item that increases all damage you deal to enemies within 13 meters by 20% (+20% per stack). The bonus applies to direct attacks, damage-over-time effects, and proc damage - anything that deals damage to an enemy inside the red ring that appears around you. Stacks are additive: 5 crystals give +100% damage to nearby enemies.

How is the 13m distance measured?

Distance is checked at the moment damage connects with the enemy, not when you fire the attack. If a projectile is launched from 20m but the enemy is within 13m when it lands, Focus Crystal applies. If a DoT was applied while you were close but you kite away to 15m, each subsequent tick is checked against your current position - not where you were when the DoT was first applied.

Does Focus Crystal work on DoTs?

Yes. Every individual tick of Bleed, Burn, Blight, and other damage-over-time effects checks the player-to-enemy distance at the moment that tick fires. If the enemy is within 13m when the tick occurs, that tick gets the +20% bonus. This makes Focus Crystal especially strong for DoT-heavy builds where multiple ticks per second all benefit from the bonus as long as you stay close.

Does Focus Crystal stack?

Yes, additively. Each additional Focus Crystal adds another +20% to all nearby damage. There is no diminishing return on the stacking - each stack is exactly as valuable as the first. 10 crystals give +200% damage to enemies within 13m, effectively tripling your close-range damage output.

Is Focus Crystal good for ranged survivors?

Mostly no for pure ranged playstyles. Huntress, Railgunner, and Engineer turrets rarely fight within 13m intentionally. The bonus only applies when the enemy is inside the ring at the moment damage lands, so a survivor who fights at 20-30m gets no value. It can still be picked up by ranged survivors since melee situations happen, but it is not a priority pick the way it is for Mercenary, Loader, or Acrid.

What is the void version of Focus Crystal?

Singularity Band is the Survivors of the Void DLC void item that corrupts all Focus Crystals. On proc, it fires a black hole that pulls enemies toward a point, dealing damage and creating a brief crowd control effect. It trades Focus Crystal's consistent passive damage bonus for an active proc-based repositioning tool. Picking up Singularity Band permanently removes all your Focus Crystal stacks for the run.
