Pluripotent Larva Risk of Rain 2

Pluripotent Larva RoR2

"Upon death, this item will be consumed and you will return to life with 3 seconds of invulnerability, and all of your items that can be corrupted will be. Corrupts all Dio's Best Friends." Void legendary from SotV DLC. Extra life on death, same as Dio's Best Friend, with a major twist: every corruptible item in your inventory instantly becomes its void counterpart on revival. Stacking gives multiple extra lives, each with its own corruption event. On-death effects like Her Biting Embrace explosion still fire.

How Pluripotent Larva Works

Works identically to Dio's Best Friend on revival - 3 seconds invulnerability, no movement penalty. The revival itself is identical. You die, the item is consumed, you return after a brief delay with a 3-second invulnerability window. The difference is entirely what happens to your inventory at the moment of revival.
On revival: every corruptible item instantly converts to its void version. AtG Missile becomes Plasma Shrimp. Ukulele becomes Polylute. Tri-Tip Dagger becomes Needletick. All yellow boss items become Newly Hatched Zoea. Every white, green, and red item that has a void counterpart flips simultaneously. This happens to all stacks - 5 AtG Missiles all become 5 Plasma Shrimps in one event.
Items that have no void counterpart are untouched. 57 Leaf Clover, Tougher Times, Repulsion Armor Plate, and many others have no void version - they remain in your inventory unchanged. Only items with an existing void counterpart in the SotV item pool are corrupted.
Stacking multiple Pluripotent Larvas gives multiple extra lives, each with its own corruption. Two Larvas = two deaths before game over. Each death consumes one Larva and corrupts all currently corruptible items. By the second death, you've already been corrupted once, so the corruption pool is different - fewer base items remain to convert.
On-death effects still trigger before revival. Her Biting Embrace ice explosion fires. Shatterspleen self-damage is irrelevant since you're already dead. Any effect tied to your death occurs normally before the Larva revives you. The revival happens after on-death effects resolve.
Items gained via Larva corruption don't unlock logbook entries. If you get Newly Hatched Zoea or Polylute for the first time through Larva corruption, those logbook entries are not marked as discovered. To unlock logbook entries, the items must be picked up directly from drops or caches.

This list is a sample, not exhaustive. Any item in the SotV DLC that has a defined void counterpart will be corrupted. The full list changes if you have additional DLC active. Before accepting a Pluripotent Larva, mentally walk through your inventory and decide whether the void versions of your key items improve or hurt your current build.

When It Helps vs Hurts Your Build

Corruption is a net gain when:
+You want Plasma Shrimp but have AtG Missiles (consistent missiles vs 10% chance)
+You want Newly Hatched Zoea and have multiple boss items
+You want Encrusted Keys from Rusted Keys for void item access
+Your corruptible items are low-value in your build anyway
+You have Transcendence (already all-shield, Planula from Scythe is still useful)
Corruption is a net loss when:
-You have many Shatterspleen or Titanic Knurls that become Zoea
-You have multiple 57 Leaf Clovers - Benthic Bloom can delete your item stacks
-You have stacked Harvester's Scythe builds relying on crit healing (Planula is worse)
-You have many Predatory Instincts - Lysate Cell is only useful on certain survivors
-You are late-run with a finely tuned build where any change is bad

Key Synergies and Use Cases

Rusted Key Risk of Rain 2Deliberate death to get Newly Hatched Zoea from boss items. If you have several Titanic Knurls, Shatterpleens, or other boss items, dying with Pluripotent Larva converts them all to Newly Hatched Zoeas. This is one of the most reliable ways to get Zoea in a run. Some players intentionally let a hit kill them during a safe moment specifically to trigger this conversion. Zoea summons void allies passively every 60 seconds - potentially more useful than the boss items depending on your build.
Rusted Key Risk of Rain 2Encrusted Key is the most reliable way to find Pluripotent Larva. There are only two void legendary items in the SotV DLC pool: Pluripotent Larva and Benthic Bloom. Each Encrusted Cache gives a void item choice. With enough Encrusted Caches you will eventually find Larva. Benthic Bloom + Recycler = guaranteed Larva since Recycler cannot reroll into the same item.
Stacking multiple Larvas gives true safety for high-difficulty runs. Two Larvas = two deaths before game over. Three Larvas = three. On Monsoon or looping runs where one mistake ends a 40-minute session, having multiple Larvas provides a meaningful safety margin. Each revival also triggers another corruption wave on any items acquired since the last death.
Revival priority matters in combined-item runs. If you hold both an Extra Life buff (from Shrine of Shaping), a Seed of Life, a Dio's Best Friend, AND a Pluripotent Larva, they fire in order: Extra Life buff first, then Seed of Life, then Dio's Best Friend, then Pluripotent Larva. Understanding this order matters when multiple safety items are active simultaneously.
57 Leaf Clover Risk of Rain 257 Leaf Clover becoming Benthic Bloom on death can destroy your run. Benthic Bloom upgrades 3 random items per stage, but at the cost of corrupting all 57 Leaf Clovers. If you have 5 Clovers contributing to 100% crit and proc consistency, losing them all to Benthic Bloom on a Larva death can gut your build. This is the most dangerous corruption scenario - factor in your Clover stack before accepting Pluripotent Larva.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does Pluripotent Larva do in Risk of Rain 2?

Pluripotent Larva is a void legendary item that acts as an extra life. On death, it is consumed and you are revived with 3 seconds of invulnerability. The key difference from Dio's Best Friend is that at the moment of revival, every item in your inventory that has a void counterpart is simultaneously corrupted into its void version. AtG Missiles become Plasma Shrimps, Ukuleles become Polylutes, boss items become Newly Hatched Zoeas, and so on.

What items get corrupted when Pluripotent Larva activates?

Every item in your inventory that has a defined void counterpart in the SotV DLC pool is corrupted simultaneously. This includes: Tri-Tip Dagger to Needletick, Rusted Key to Encrusted Key, AtG Missile to Plasma Shrimp, Ukulele to Polylute, Predatory Instincts to Lysate Cell, Focus Crystal to Singularity Band, Harvester's Scythe to Planula, 57 Leaf Clover to Benthic Bloom, and all yellow boss items to Newly Hatched Zoea. Artifact Key is the only boss item excluded.

Is Pluripotent Larva better than Dio's Best Friend?

It depends entirely on what you have in your inventory at the time of death. Larva is more accessible since it comes from void caches (Encrusted Keys) rather than requiring a red item drop. The corruption can be beneficial - converting AtG to Plasma Shrimp or boss items to Zoea - or devastating if it removes key items like 57 Leaf Clovers. Dio's Best Friend is a pure extra life with no consequences. For safety with no inventory risk, Dio's is better. For deliberate build-shaping via corruption, Larva can be more powerful.

Can you stack Pluripotent Larva?

Yes. Each stack is one additional extra life. Two Pluripotent Larvas means you can die twice before game over. Each death consumes one Larva and triggers one corruption wave. After the first death, many items are already corrupted, so the second corruption wave affects fewer items (only ones picked up or corrupted to base form since the first death).

How do you get Pluripotent Larva?

The most reliable method is Encrusted Keys. Each Encrusted Cache offers a void item, and there are only two void legendary items in the SotV pool: Pluripotent Larva and Benthic Bloom. If you get Benthic Bloom first, using a Recycler on it gives Pluripotent Larva with 100% certainty since the Recycler cannot reroll the same item. Rusted Keys corrupted into Encrusted Keys are your best farming path.

Does Pluripotent Larva trigger on-death effects?

Yes. When you die and the Larva activates, all on-death effects fire as if you actually died. Her Biting Embrace's ice explosion detonates, for example. The effects resolve first, then the Larva revives you. This is identical to how Dio's Best Friend handles on-death effects.
