Chest Timing — When Can You Evolve?

  • Default: boss chest after 10:00 in most stages
  • Mad Forest: first chest from Glowing Bat at 1:00 can evolve
  • Mt. Moonspell: all chests except the 3:00 and 5:00 boss chests can evolve
  • Lake Foscari: first chest from Foscaritrice at 2:00 can evolve
  • Neo Galuga: chest from Metal Alien at 9:00 can evolve
  • Tiny Bridge: all chests except the 3:00 and 6:00 boss chests can evolve
  • Always evolve (any time): Dairy Plant, Gallo Tower, Cappella Magna, Il Molise, Boss Rash, Laborratory, Abyss Foscari, Hectic Highway, Bat Country
  • Multi-evolution chests: Il Molise (9:00, 11:00, 13:00), Dairy Plant & Cappella Magna (10:00 & 20:00), Bat Country, Tiny Bridge, and chests from Giant Enemy Crab/Drowner/Stalker can evolve up to 3–5 weapons at once
  • Arcana chests (11:00 and 21:00) cannot evolve unless already at max Arcana count
  • Gyorunton: any item-granting chest can evolve, regardless of time
  • Co-op: one player holds the weapon, the other the passive — both count with Share Passives enabled. Works regardless of which player holds which item.
  • Limit Break: weapons with Limit Break levels can still evolve, but lose their extra Limit Break stats on evolution (exception: SpellStrom and Alucard Shield keep their Limit Break stats after evolving)

Vampire Survivors Evolution — Frequently Asked Questions

You need three things: the weapon at max level (usually level 8), its required passive item in your inventory at any level, and a boss chest opened after the 10-minute mark. The chest replaces your base weapon with the evolved version. Some evolutions require the passive to also be max level - Infinite Corridor, Crimson Shroud, Sole Solution, and Ashes of Muspell all have this extra condition.
Level Pentagram to max (level 8) and have the Crown passive item in your inventory, then open a boss chest after the 10-minute mark. It evolves into Gorgeous Moon - one of the strongest evolutions in the game, which erases all non-boss enemies on screen and vacuums every XP gem simultaneously.
Rock Riot (Ode to Castlevania DLC) uses Stone Mask as its passive item. Level Rock Riot to max, have Stone Mask in your inventory, and open a boss chest. It evolves into Gemma Torpor - a ground-shaking stone wave with heavy slow and stun effects on all enemies hit.
Raging Fire (Ode to Castlevania DLC) evolves with Spinach as its passive. Level it to max, have Spinach in inventory, open a boss chest. It becomes Salamender - a persistent burning serpent that chases enemies continuously across the map.
Ice Fang (Ode to Castlevania DLC) requires Spellbinder. Level Ice Fang to max, add Spellbinder to your inventory, open a boss chest. It evolves into Cocytus - an ice attack that creates a persistent frozen lake which freezes all enemies it touches indefinitely.
Hand Grenade (Ode to Castlevania DLC) evolves with Candelabrador. Level it to max, have Candelabrador in inventory, open a boss chest. It becomes The RPG - a single rocket with a massive explosion radius that clears entire screen sectors.
The Alucart Sworb (note the spelling) does not need a passive item. It auto-evolves into Alucard Swords once it reaches level 8 and you open a boss chest. For the second stage into Alucard Shield, you need 6 max-level passive items and 6 active weapon evolutions simultaneously.
Spread Shot (Operation Guns DLC) requires Weapon Power-Up plus Empty Tome. Level Spread Shot to max with both passives in inventory, then open a boss chest. It becomes Prototype C - a full 180-degree wall of projectiles.
Short Gun (Operation Guns DLC) needs Weapon Power-Up and Bracer. Level Short Gun to max with both passives in inventory, open a boss chest. It becomes Prototype B - a wall of shotgun pellets that shreds entire enemy groups.
Shadow Servant evolves with Duplicator as its passive. Level it to max, have Duplicator in inventory, open a boss chest. It evolves into Ophion, which multiplies the shadow servants to simultaneously pursue and hit all enemies on screen.
Alchemy Whip (Ode to Castlevania DLC) uses Tiragisu as its passive. Level it to max, have Tiragisu in inventory, open a boss chest. It evolves into Vampire Killer - the legendary Belmont whip with massive diagonal strikes and holy fire damage.
Gale Force (Ode to Castlevania DLC) uses Bracer as its passive. Level it to max, have Bracer in inventory, open a boss chest. It evolves into Pneuma Tempestas - a sustained hurricane blast that sweeps the entire arena.
Santa Javelin (base game) evolves with Clover into Seraphic Cry, firing holy javelins in 8 directions. The Ode to Castlevania Javelin uses Spellbinder and evolves into Long Inus - a javelin that pierces the full screen length.
Evolutions replace the base weapon with a stronger version and keep the passive. Unions combine two base weapons into one, consuming both and freeing a weapon slot. Gifts add a bonus weapon without removing the base weapon - you keep everything and gain extra. Morphs are character-specific automatic transformations triggered by reaching high levels with specific relics.
Yes, in certain stages. The first chest in Mad Forest (Glowing Bat at 1:00) can evolve. All chests in Dairy Plant, Il Molise, Cappella Magna, Boss Rash, Laborratory, Abyss Foscari, and Hectic Highway can evolve at any time. Arcana chests at 11:00 and 21:00 cannot evolve unless you are already at max Arcana. Gyorunton can evolve with any chest regardless of time.
Yes. In co-op, one player can hold the base weapon and another can hold the required passive — both count toward the evolution with Share Passives enabled in stage settings. The evolution triggers when the weapon holder opens a qualifying boss chest. This makes co-op runs significantly easier for hitting evolution conditions since inventory requirements are split across two players.
Yes, but with a catch. Weapons with Limit Break levels can still evolve normally. However, on evolution the weapon loses all Limit Break bonus stats and resets to level 1 of the evolved form. The exceptions are SpellStrom and Alucard Shield — both keep their Limit Break stats after evolving. Limit Break is unlocked by collecting the Great Gospel relic after defeating The Ender in Cappella Magna.
A Morph is a character-specific permanent transformation — not a weapon evolution. It triggers automatically when a character reaches around level 80 and you have obtained the Milky Way Map relic. No boss chest is required. On Morph, the character permanently changes form and their starting weapon auto-evolves as part of the transformation. The four Morph characters are Mortaccio (becomes Zi'Assunta, Bone evolves), Yatta Cavallo (becomes Cavallo, Lightning Ring evolves), Bianca Ramba (becomes Ramba, Axe evolves), and O'Sole Meeo (becomes Meeo, Santa Water evolves).
