Artifact of Spite Risk of Rain 2

Artifact of Spite

Enemies drop multiple exploding bombs on death. Bombs bounce twice and detonate on the third bounce - 150% damage, 7m radius, 0.75 proc coefficient. The bomb count scales with enemy physical size: common enemies drop a handful, Imp Overlords drop up to 30. Only Monster Team enemies produce bombs. The code is uniquely hidden in the settings menu rather than on a stage tablet.

How Bombs Work

Bounce pattern. Each bomb bounces twice off the ground or terrain, then detonates on the third contact. They travel in random directions from the enemy's death location, spreading across the area.
150% damage, 0.75 proc coefficient, 7m radius. Damage is based on the killing blow's damage source. Proc coefficient means most on-hit items can trigger from bomb hits. Tougher Times has a chance to block each bomb individually.
Bomb count scales with physical size. The number of bombs a monster drops equals the height of its kinematic hitbox. Larger enemies drop more. Hard cap of 30 bombs (Imp Overlord only). Grovetender drops 29.
Only Monster Team enemies drop bombs. Void Seed enemies, Void Locus enemies, and Squid Polyp turrets are not Monster Team and never drop bombs. Void Reavers, Barnacles, and Jailers are Monster Team and do drop bombs.

Bomb Count by Enemy Size

Enemy Approx Bombs Notes
Imp Overlord30 (max cap)Only enemy to hit the hard cap
Grovetender29Largest wisp-family boss, very close to cap
Stone Golem / bossesHigh (~10-20)Large hitbox = many bombs
Common enemies (Lemurian, Beetle etc.)Low (~2-5)Small hitbox = few bombs
JellyfishLow but denseSmall bombs stack visually - can appear like more than they are
Void enemies (Void Reaver etc.)NormalARE Monster Team - do drop bombs
Void Seed enemies0NOT Monster Team - no bombs
Melee Survivors Beware

Bombs spawn at the enemy's death location and immediately start bouncing. Melee survivors that kill at close range are often inside the first bounce radius when bombs detonate. Positioning kills are key - attack from the side and move away immediately on the killing blow.

Best Items for Spite Runs

Hardlight Afterburner
Hardlight Afterburner
Extra utility charges let you air-dodge away from bouncing bombs mid-air. Best survivability item for Spite runs.
Hopoo Feather
Hopoo Feather
Extra air jump to clear bomb clusters on the ground. Stack multiple for maximum vertical evasion.
Tougher Times
Tougher Times
Each bomb hit triggers a separate 15% block roll. Against a 20-bomb spread, expected blocks are significant.
Personal Shield Generator
Personal Shield Generator
Shield absorbs incoming bomb hits before health. Regenerating shield gives a consistent buffer against bomb clusters.
Paul's Goat Hoof
Paul's Goat Hoof
Raw speed to outrun bouncing bombs. Stack with Energy Drink for near-constant bomb outpacing.
Mocha
Mocha
+7.5% attack speed and +7.5% move speed per stack. Raw speed helps outpace bouncing bombs and kill enemies faster before more pile up.

Best Combos

Spite + Sacrifice
Spite + Sacrifice

Kill enemies, bombs spawn, you also get item drops. The hazard is real but so is the reward. Keep moving to dodge bombs and collect drops safely.

Spite + Chaos
Spite + Chaos

Monsters kill each other with bombs, and their bomb deaths trigger more bombs. Chain reaction explosions clear rooms solo. You're also in the crossfire - high risk, chaotic fun.

Spite + Swarms
Spite + Swarms

Double enemies means double bomb spam on every kill. Stages become thick with bouncing explosives. AoE and mobility essential. Extremely chaotic.

Spite + Kin
Spite + Kin

One monster type flooding the stage. If Kin picks Imp Overlords or Grovetenders, each kill drops up to 30 bombs. Most dangerous Spite combo possible.

Spite alone
Spite alone

Manageable solo modifier. Mobility items trivialize most bomb clusters. The real danger is melee survivors killing at close range and getting caught in the immediate explosion.

Spite + Glass

10% health means any bomb cluster is lethal. Bombs have 0.75 proc coefficient - even one hit at 150% base damage can kill a Glass player on harder difficulties.

Tips

Kill from range or from the side. Bombs spawn at the target's position and spread outward. Standing directly over a kill means bombs bounce straight into you. Strafe to the side as you land the killing blow.
Abuse vertical movement. Bombs bounce horizontally. Being airborne when they detonate means most miss below you. Hopoo Feathers, jump pads, and air-mobility skills avoid the majority of explosions.
Avoid Imp Overlord packs. A pack of two Imp Overlords dying simultaneously drops up to 60 bombs in a small area. That is a guaranteed kill at low health. Isolate and kill them one at a time.
Chaos makes Spite free loot. With Chaos active, monster bombs hit other monsters. A chain reaction of enemies dying and bombing each other clears stages with minimal player effort. Solo this is a net positive.
Tougher Times stacks well. Each bomb is an independent hit rolling its own block chance. Against a 20-bomb spread, even a 15% block chance stops 3-4 bombs on average. Stack 4-5 for near-immunity to small clusters.
Grovetender is the most surprising bomb count. At 29 bombs, a Grovetender kill mid-fight can wipe you instantly if you're standing still. Learn the size-to-bomb relationship and give large bosses extra space when finishing them.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does the Artifact of Spite do in Risk of Rain 2?

The Artifact of Spite makes enemies drop multiple exploding bombs on death. Bombs bounce twice then detonate on the third bounce, dealing 150% base damage in a 7m radius with a 0.75 proc coefficient. The number of bombs scales with enemy physical size - Imp Overlords drop up to 30, common enemies drop 2-5. Only Monster Team enemies drop bombs.

What is the Artifact of Spite code?

The Artifact of Spite code is ▲●▲ ●●● ▲●▲ - an outer ring of Triangles with an inner ring of Circles. The code is found in the game's settings/options screen, visible during the animation when opening it. Set LOD Bias to "Off" to see it clearly at any time.

Where is the Artifact of Spite code?

The Artifact of Spite code is in the game's options/settings menu - it appears on screen during the opening animation. It is one of the more unusual code locations since it requires no in-game exploration. Set the LOD Bias graphics setting to Off for a clear view at any time.

How many bombs does each enemy drop with Artifact of Spite?

Bomb count scales with enemy physical size (the height of their kinematic hitbox). Common enemies like Lemurians drop around 2-5 bombs. Large bosses like Stone Golems and Elder Lemurians drop significantly more. The Grovetender drops 29 and the Imp Overlord hits the hard cap of 30. At very high bomb counts, density limits prevent all bombs from spawning.

Do all enemies drop bombs with Artifact of Spite?

No - only Monster Team members drop bombs. Enemies spawned inside Void Seeds, enemies in Void Locus, and Squid Polyp turrets (which are minions, not Monster Team) do not drop bombs. Void Reavers, Void Barnacles, and Void Jailers are Monster Team and do drop bombs.

Is Artifact of Spite good or bad?

Spite is a neutral-to-positive modifier for mobile survivors. The bombs are dangerous at close range and in dense areas, but mobility items (Hopoo Feather, Hardlight Afterburner, Paul's Goat Hoof) trivialize most bomb clusters. Melee survivors that kill at close range are most at risk. Pairing with Chaos turns bombs into a room-clearing mechanic as monsters kill each other.
