What Does Shattered Knowledge Do in Megabonk?

Shattered Knowledge is an Epic item that transforms every XP shard traveling toward you into a damaging projectile. As each shard flies from a killed enemy to your position, it passes through and damages every enemy along its path. In dense swarms this creates a continuous stream of incidental damage from the XP pickup that would happen anyway - no extra action required.

The damage formula per shard is: copies x (8 + playerLevel). One copy at level 30 deals 38 damage per shard. Three copies at level 30 deal 114 per shard. Each copy also increases the projectile range and radius of the shard, meaning shards travel through more of the swarm before reaching you. The shards have a proc coefficient of 0.5, so they can trigger on-hit items at half the normal chance.

Damage Is Snapshotted at Pickup - Not Your Current Level

This is the most important mechanic to understand. When you pick up Shattered Knowledge, your current level is locked in as the damage value for that copy. Leveling up afterward does NOT increase shard damage until you pick up another copy of Shattered Knowledge. A copy picked up at Level 10 always deals 1 x (8 + 10) = 18 damage per shard, even at Level 50. Pick up copies as late in the run as possible to maximize the level snapshot, or grab a second copy mid-run to refresh the damage value at a higher level.

Shattered Knowledge Damage at Different Levels

CopiesLevel at PickupDamage per ShardNotes
11018Early pickup - damage doesn't scale until next copy
13038Mid-run pickup
15058Late pickup - best single copy value
330114Three copies, each snapshotted at Lv30
550290Five copies all picked up at Lv50

How to Unlock Shattered Knowledge in Megabonk

Upgrade the Attraction Tome to Level 8 in a single run. The Attraction Tome levels up each time you visit a Shrine of Succ - you need 8 visits in one run. The Shrine of Succ is marked on the minimap with a green icon. After reaching Level 8 in a run, Shattered Knowledge is added to your unlock shop and can be purchased with Silver.

Unlocking Efficiently

To reliably hit 8 Shrine of Succ visits, keep the Attraction Tome in your active tome slots so it levels up each visit. Limit your total tome slots to reduce dilution - fewer available tomes means a higher chance of being offered Attraction Tome on each level-up. Tier 1 Forest is sufficient. The shrines are marked on the full map (Tab key) so you can plan a route to all of them.

Best Characters to Use Shattered Knowledge With

Fox - Fox's RNG Blessing passive grants +1.5% Luck per level, which improves the rarity of items found throughout the run. In the context of Shattered Knowledge, Fox runs typically include Sucky Magnet (Fox guide on megabonk.org lists it as S-tier game-changer), and Sucky Magnet's periodic XP pulls interact directly with Shattered Knowledge. Multiple Fox builds on megabonk.gg explicitly include Shattered Knowledge and the Attraction Tome. Fox's high Luck also means he finds second and third copies of Shattered Knowledge more reliably, refreshing the level snapshot at higher levels to keep shard damage competitive throughout the run.

Robinette - Robinette's Stonks passive scales damage with gold held. Top Robinette builds run Cursed Tome for maximum enemy density, which generates the most XP shards per second of any build in the game. More enemies killed per second means more shards flying per second, and each shard damages every enemy it passes through. In a high-density Cursed Tome Robinette run, Shattered Knowledge adds meaningful supplemental damage from the constant stream of shards flying through packed swarms - entirely passively, requiring no build investment beyond picking it up.

Spaceman - Spaceman's Quantum XP Theory passive gives +1.5% XP gain per level, making him one of the characters most naturally oriented around XP efficiency. His entire design centers on leveling faster and generating more XP. The megabonk.org Spaceman guide explicitly recommends XP-boosting items for exponential growth. Shattered Knowledge converts that XP generation directly into damage - every shard Spaceman's XP passive helps create more of also becomes a damaging projectile. The item rewards the same XP-heavy playstyle his passive already pushes him toward.

Best Items to Pair with Shattered Knowledge

Sucky Magnet
Sucky Magnet
The primary Shattered Knowledge synergy - explicitly noted on the Sucky Magnet megabonk.org database page. Sucky Magnet periodically pulls all XP shards on the map toward you simultaneously. With Shattered Knowledge active, each of those pulled shards slices through every enemy between its starting position and your location. A single Sucky Magnet pulse during a dense swarm sends dozens of damaging shards through packed enemy groups all at once.
Attraction Tome
Attraction Tome
The unlock requirement for Shattered Knowledge and its natural companion. Higher Attraction Tome levels increase your XP pickup radius, which means shards travel toward you from further away - giving each shard more distance to pass through enemies before reaching you. A higher level Attraction Tome means longer shard travel paths which means more enemies each shard can hit per trip. They arrive together naturally since Attraction Tome Lv8 is required to unlock the item.
Echo Shard
Echo Shard
Echo Shard gives a 12% chance to drop an extra XP shard on each kill. More XP shards generated per kill means more damaging projectiles per kill with Shattered Knowledge active. In a high-kill-rate build, Echo Shard and Shattered Knowledge together turn each enemy death into a reliable source of multiple damaging shards flying through the surrounding crowd. The two items reward the same kill-density playstyle and compound directly.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does Shattered Knowledge do in Megabonk?

XP shards deal damage to every enemy they pass through as they travel to you. Damage per shard = copies x (8 + playerLevel at pickup). Proc coefficient is 0.5. Additional copies increase damage linearly and expand shard projectile range. Damage is snapshotted at the level you pick up each copy - it does not update when you level up afterward.

How do you unlock Shattered Knowledge in Megabonk?

Upgrade the Attraction Tome to Level 8 in a single run. Each Shrine of Succ visit upgrades the tome by one level, so 8 visits are required. After reaching Level 8, purchase Shattered Knowledge from the Unlocks shop with Silver.

Does Shattered Knowledge damage scale with level in Megabonk?

Only at the moment you pick it up. The damage formula uses your level at the time of pickup and locks that value in. If you level up after picking up Shattered Knowledge, shard damage stays at the value calculated when you grabbed it. Picking up a second copy at a higher level recalculates at the new level for that copy, effectively refreshing the damage. For maximum value, delay picking up copies until as late in the run as possible.

Is Shattered Knowledge the same as Shattered Wisdom in Megabonk?

There is no item called Shattered Wisdom in Megabonk. The correct item name is Shattered Knowledge. The confusion likely comes from the item's descriptive flavor text ("Knowledge really hurts") and the general theme of the item. There is only one XP-shard-as-projectile item in the game, and it is Shattered Knowledge.
