Effect: 25% chance to punch you on hit (cannot kill you). Triggers item effects that activate when taking damage. Does not trigger the Mirror.
Unlock: Obtain 3 Leeching Crystal items in one run
Kevin is an Epic item with a deceptively simple mechanic: every time you hit an enemy, there is a 25% chance Kevin punches you for a small amount of damage. This self-damage cannot kill you - Kevin will always leave you with at least 1 HP.
The key to Kevin's value is that the self-punch counts as taking damage, which activates any item that procs when you are hit. Items like Electric Plug, Toxic Barrel, Cactus, Coward's Cloak, Thunder Mitts, and Spiky Shield all fire on every Kevin proc. In a build loaded with on-damage items, Kevin turns your offensive hits into a constant stream of defensive and damage procs, without any enemy needing to actually touch you.
Kevin's self-damage bypasses shields and hits HP directly. This is an important distinction - shield-based survivability provides no protection against Kevin procs. Build in lifesteal or HP regen to offset the constant chip damage, especially in long runs or high-enemy-density situations.
Kevin is highly build-specific. In a run without on-damage items, Kevin does nothing beneficial and simply chips away at your HP. If you have unlocked and purchased Kevin, consider using the Toggler to disable it from your loot pool for runs where you are not specifically building around it. Picking it up accidentally in a build not designed for it can end a run.
Kevin is excellent in the right build and actively harmful in the wrong one. It is one of the most build-specific items in the game.
In a build stacking multiple on-damage items - Electric Plug, Toxic Barrel, Cactus, Coward's Cloak - Kevin becomes a relentless proc engine. Every offensive hit has a 25% chance to trigger all of those items simultaneously, independent of whether enemies are actually hitting you. The result is a build that self-sustains its defensive and offensive procs through its own attack rate.
Kevin also synergises with Leeching Crystal - collect three Leeching Crystals in one run to unlock Kevin in the first place, and the HP boost from Leeching Crystal helps absorb the ongoing chip damage Kevin causes.
Kevin procs rapidly in high-attack-speed builds, which means the chip damage accumulates quickly. Stack Lifesteal Tome or items that provide lifesteal to keep your HP topped up. The combination of Kevin's self-hits and lifesteal creates a loop where attacking enemies simultaneously damages you and heals you back, leaving most procs as pure profit.

Leeching Crystal is a Rare item that requires upgrading Regen Tome to Level 8 to unlock. Getting three in a single run requires building toward chests and the Shady Guy NPC consistently. Characters with strong early survivability - Megachad, Athena - can survive long enough to find three Leeching Crystals in a single Tier 3 run more reliably than fragile builds.
Before patch v1.0.7, Kevin's self-damage triggered Mirror's invulnerability frames. At high attack speed, the procs chained fast enough to create near-permanent i-frames, making the player effectively immortal. This broke the game's balance and the developer patched it out in v1.0.7, resetting the entire leaderboard in the process.
Post-patch, the wiki explicitly states Kevin "does not trigger the Mirror." The two items no longer interact in a meaningful way for survivability. Kevin still works with every other on-damage item in the game - Mirror is simply the one exception carved out by the patch.
Kevin + Mirror immortality was patched in v1.0.7. Kevin remains a strong item for on-damage builds using Electric Plug, Toxic Barrel, Cactus, Coward's Cloak, and similar items. Mirror is still a good survivability item on its own. The two just no longer synergise with each other.
Athena - Kevin's self-damage keeps Athena's HP low, activating her Lock In passive which increases damage at low HP. The combination of Kevin's chip damage and Lifesteal creates a controlled low-HP state that keeps the damage bonus active without dying.
Amog - Amog's passive causes poisoned enemies to explode on death, poisoning nearby enemies. Kevin + Toxic Barrel is a particularly strong combo here - Kevin procs the Toxic Barrel on each self-punch, constantly releasing poison clouds that feed into Amog's chain explosion mechanic.
Robinette - Robinette gains gold when taking damage via the Golden Shield item. Kevin procs the Golden Shield every 25% of hits, generating a consistent gold stream that feeds Robinette's passive damage scaling from gold held.
Vlad - Vlad has +1% Lifesteal per level, making him one of the best characters to absorb Kevin's chip damage. In a Vlad build with high attack speed and Lifesteal Tome, Kevin's self-hits are almost entirely offset by the lifesteal on each offensive attack.
Kevin gives you a 25% chance to take self-damage every time you hit an enemy. This self-damage cannot kill you. Its value comes from triggering item effects that activate when you take damage - items like Electric Plug, Toxic Barrel, Cactus, and Coward's Cloak all proc on each Kevin self-punch. Kevin bypasses shields and hits HP directly.
Obtain 3 Leeching Crystal items in a single run. Leeching Crystal is unlocked by upgrading Regen Tome to Level 8. After meeting the condition, go to Main Menu - Unlocks - Items and purchase Kevin with Silver.
After unlocking and purchasing Kevin, it enters your loot pool and can drop from Treasure Chests or the Shady Guy NPC. Because it is an Epic item, it drops more frequently than Legendary items. Once unlocked, players report it appearing fairly often in runs - use the Toggler to disable it for runs where you are not building around on-damage effects.
No. The Kevin + Mirror invulnerability combo was patched out in v1.0.7. The wiki explicitly states Kevin does not trigger Mirror. The original interaction allowed Kevin's self-damage to chain Mirror's invulnerability frames at high attack speed, creating near-permanent immunity. The developer patched this and reset the leaderboard. Kevin remains strong with other on-damage items but Mirror is the one exception.
Stack on-damage items: Electric Plug, Toxic Barrel, Cactus, and Coward's Cloak all fire on every Kevin proc. Add Lifesteal Tome or a lifesteal item to offset the chip damage. High attack speed maximizes how often Kevin procs per second. Athena is a strong character for this since Kevin keeps her at low HP, activating her Lock In damage passive.
